I love this so much. It's pretty much a GUI for #tampermonkey, offering an easier way for #blind folks to find elements on a webpage and do things to them. Yes, you could do the same things directly by just writing JavaScript yourself. But this is much, much faster, and requires a bit less knowledge. It took me less than 30 seconds to turn all the story titles on fanfiction.net into headings. Labeling a button, or making other small changes would be just as fast. The typos and slightly incorrect English put me off at first; especially the word "blinds" for blind people felt weird and derogatory. apparently the author is from #Cameroon, though, so maybe that's standard there. stsolution2.org/WebAccessibilizer/#a11y#accessibility#screenreader

@TSchulte Want it, yes. But I'm sure if I lived somewhere in central Africa, affording it would be another matter entirely. We're just lucky that we speak English, so anything we make we can just not translate at all. I have no idea what language is spoken in Cameroon, but I doubt releasing a program exclusively in that language is viable; it wouldn't surprise me if his choices were "do his best in English" or "don't release anything ever".
It is 100% a language thing, yes. Many languages outside of English don't really do the "blind person" thing but nounify the word blind into essentially "blind one", so if you then backtranslate back to English that just becomes blind/blinds. The guy has been working on this for years and it actually used to be a tampermonkey script, but it got accepted in the chrome store a couple days ago
@x0 I want to like Firefox. But accessibility API is way too slow, cpu and memory use is way too high, no automatic alt text, and there translation is years behind. Chrome without Adblock uses half as many system resources as Firefox with Adblock, and is also faster. And now Mozilla is purchasing ad companies and using data in AI training anyway.

@x0@matt Ublock works in edge and every browser other than chrome. Personally I don’t use Adblock and just hide iframes and block popups. I almost never get an ad doing that.
@x0@matt It hasn’t. The forks are keeping it going to take market share away from chrome. And even when it goes, if it goes, you can run something like privoxy or adguard home. Ad blocking isn’t in any real danger from v3.
@x0@matt Adblock is in danger from YouTube and twitch inserting ads into the stream server side instead of client side. Meaning they’re indistinguishable to ad blockers, and also show up in files captured by yt dlp.

I've used Linux exclusively since 2009 (occasionally BSD), and before that, Linux was my primary operating system, which I first tried out in 2005.
I dual-booted Arch Linux and Windows in college (2008/2009) but I mostly used Arch Linux.
Linux and BSD are burned into my brain, and I no longer know how to use modern Windows versions.

DavDroid 4.5.1 unfortunately failed RB. Which shows the thin line between "deterministic" and "reproducible":
We were able to build the app umpteen times, and got the very same, byte identical APK on each build: deterministic. So, it was reproducible, right? Well: no. It didn't match the APK built by the developer. A very slight difference in this case, an "off-by-one" in the baseline (so don't you worry, it's just the optimizer).
(2/2) We could have claimed: "Reproducible!" – as we were able to reproduce the very same APK over and again, on multiple builders even. But: it was not the APK "upstream" shipped we reproduced, just our own builds.
Hence, if you wonder about the warning shield at DavDroid v1.5.1: We could not reproduce THAT APK. But, the difference was minimal, and not in the code itself: it was just the baseline profile, which differed in number of "hot" (important) methods: developer.android.com/topic/pe…
And now you wonder why the shield turned green, right? Well: when after about 15 tries we always got the byte-identical APK, but not one matching the original, fate seemed to have been sealed. But I forgot to commit recipe & logs – and today, next to the "off-by-one" we got the "one time lucky", and succeeded reproducing the original APK.

The server in @bcantrill's story had 10 CPUs, 32 GB of RAM, and about 170 users. Assuming that was ~170 concurrently logged in users, even if they're mostly idle, that works out to about 5% of a CPU and roughly 192 MB of RAM per user. How long has it been since we've been able to run a desktop GUI, even an idle one with no open apps, on that amount of RAM? And yes, this Sun Ray server was actually running an X server, window manager, etc. for each session; the story mentions that later.
dividing by users in that context is perhaps weird, depending on how many resources are being shared across the sessions. But one big problem these days is that if you have a high dpi screen, the framebuffer alone is going to be like 20MiB, you need multiple copies of the framebuffer to avoid tearing, and you're going to need all your other textures to match that fidelity. With a 4k monitor you can probably blow those numbers before you even start loading an app.
I've also been thinking about @bcantrill's other HN comment on that thread (news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4…) where he said American Airlines was eager to use Sun Ray for airport kiosks, but Sun didn't implement USB printing. In retrospect, I think there was a brief window where it made sense to use that kind of thin client machine for kiosks, a time when a cheap client had 4-8 MB of RAM, but one needed more than that for a typical GUI, so running the GUI on a server was a sensible solution. These days, a cheap kiosk machine can be based on a Raspberry Pi compute module with 4-8 *GB* of RAM, and that is vastly overkill for many applications. Perversely, it probably makes more economic sense to use that overkill compute module in many applications than to use one whose specs are a closer match for the application, because non-recurring engineering costs dominate in low-volume applications. I've already been thinking about that due to a current side gig (can't share details).
@cachondo I did quite a bit of work with Windows based kiosks when working for a bank around 15 years ago. I talked to one of the engineers about Windows was the OS of choice especially as they came from OS/2 and the main reason apparently was due to the ease of creation of hardware drivers for the specialist devices they were using on the device.
@andrew Yeah, I guess that makes a weird kind of sense. Frustrating, given how often they bluescreen and reset compared with unix-based things, though. @matt
@andrew @cachondo These days, with modern Linux-based SBCs or compute modules like the Raspberry Pi line, you can do a lot with just GPIO, e.g. exposing arbitrary buttons. For somewhat more complex things, like, I suppose, the parts of an ATM, I think you can also do I2C from user space.
@cachondo Yeah this was 15 years ago so my experience is not up to date by any means. Its also worth noting these machines were full of management tools like a tool to completely lock down all unknown processes/communications/ports, AV tools and remote management tools. These all came from third parties.
