I had some serious anxiety about posting this, because I didn't want it to come off the wrong way. But after starting to learn how screen reader trees are actually programmed, my verdict: accessibility programming doesn't feel as accessible to me as I'd like it to be.

I’m not taking the side of violence because I can’t be violent. I’d get squashed by nearly anyone. But has any important social movement forward ever succeeded without violence? We have never achieved anything like suffrage, gay/lesbian rights, accessibility rights, racial rights, etc without violence. It is only when they have physically overthrown oppressors that progressives have succeeded. I don’t think that everyone who chooses violence in the name of a progressive cause is “mentally ill.”

why is anyone worried about $250B? That's nothing. The US housing market alone is $50T

@ferda Jo, rozumím.

in reply to Archos

Viz třeba ta slavná digitalizace, Hřiboviny a podobně.

The search for a search engine is annoying.

I don't want anything exclusively bing/google powered so mullvad/ddg/the usual suspects aren't an option

don't really want something ad funded either (so no mojeek)

looking at kagi but while I have significantly better results with it, especially in badly formulated/opaque queries (and it allows quite a few poweruser features), @Seirdy points out in their search engine blog post, they might have some problematic biases.

Exasperated and disturbed the new IP license in the Mastodon TOS has no termination clause.

mastodon.social/terms-of-servi…

Facebook and YouTube have terms saying you can intentionally remove your IP grant by deleting the content. Twitter lets you remove your IP grant by deleting your *accounts*, which is punitive, but possible to exercise (I did). It's very good Mastodon's grant is limited-use—but so was Tumblr, and it eventually abused its. I want Mastodon to be as pro-user as *Facebook and Google*.

Update:

Mastodon has checked its alarming new TOS into git as the new TOS template:

infosec.exchange/@dvandal/1146…

Meaning all new Ruby Mastodon instances created after this date who use the stock legal text will *also* adopt an irrevocable IP grant license (no way to terminate the license if you decide your instance is abusing it) for post content (and also potentially some existing instances, if they regenerate their TOS from templates)

I've posted a Github issue outlining why I'm freaked out at the word "irrevokable" in Mastodon's new TOS IP clause:

New Terms of Service IP clause cannot be terminated or revoked, not even by deleting content

github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i…

It's sort of long (sorry), but several people seemed confused what my problem was earlier, so maybe extra detail will help. I include an outline of my "nightmare scenario", and contrast other site TOSes.

I *will* delete my account over this, and I am not joking.

In 1988, IBM tried to seize the whole PC market back and make it proprietary again.

This seemed to be the end for the PC open platform. Consensus was that you couldn't win against IBM.

Luckily for history, Compaq, and founding CEO Rod Canion, decided to try.

I can't believe that the UK would even contemplate deporting an 8 year old and an 12 year old to Brazil alone. This is the letter the home office sent the 11 year old:

“I am satisfied that there are no serious or compelling reasons to grant you settlement. I am satisfied that you could return to Brazil and continue your education in Brazil where you would have the option to attend an English-speaking school.

Whilst this may involve a degree of disruption in family life this is considered to be proportionate to the legitimate aim of maintaining effective immigration control.”

I'm ashamed at the actions of this country.

“Big Brother Tactics”: Why Bill C-2’s New Warrantless Disclosure Demand Powers Extend Far Beyond Internet and Telecom Providers
michaelgeist.ca/2025/06/big-br…

We could just ... not give police tear gas. That is a decision we could make. A state or city could make that decision, and remove it from inventory.

Maybe police do not actually need area-denial weaponry present at every public gathering. Maybe "people are throwing bottles at us, therefore tear gas" need not be the standard playbook.

The medical research on the _safety_ of CS gas suggests a spectrum from "unknown" to "probably dangerous, particularly the way it actually used": propublica.org/article/tear-ga… med.umn.edu/news/u-m-study-sho…

I had less luck finding studies about its _effectiveness_ of CS gas for the presumed goals of police forces: officer safety and encouraging compliance with dispersal order. I found a lot of quotes from police along the lines of "well, the only alternative is bashing people with batons" One study of the introduction of CS spray in UK police forces (for personal protection, not crowd control) did not find a clear win: doi.org/10.1108/13639510010343…

Anecdotally, we might look at the current situation at LA, or that a few years ago in Minneapolis, and note that CS gas was not effective in reducing crowd antagonism, even if it does move people from one place to another.

We did it! 🥳🎉
