Mozilla just named Anthony Enzor-DeMeo as their new CEO. He says:

“Firefox will grow from a browser into a broader ecosystem of trusted software. Firefox will remain our anchor. It will evolve into a modern AI browser and support a portfolio of new and trusted software additions.”

RIP, Firefox.

This might be the point in time where a successful project – #Mozilla – may need to be forked by the community (especially developers) into a new, unenshittified reimagination.

It's worked with LibreOffice (previousloy OpenOffice), MariaDB (previously MySQL), Valkey (Redis), ... and many more.

I have hopes that the recent turn of events won't kill the former browser of common sense. There's hope it'll become a 'PhoenizillaFromTheAshes' to arise without #enshittification.

Let's support a world with less #GenAI/#LLM and other shit in it, which is harmful to society, mental health, democracy as well as our environment.

Mozilla has a new CEO who:

- Has been at Mozilla for less than a year
- Has no prior open source experience (but well in "fintech" and "real estate")
- Has a MBA (aka "brainworm diploma")
- Is all-in on AI

That’s exactly the kind of bingo profile the whole community has been waiting for.

Newspapers really are bad at their job.
I work at two libraries.
One hasn't received the Sunday paper in like a month despite paying for it and reporting that problem each Sunday & Monday.
The other hasn't received any papers in over a month because of an invoicing problem, the phone number on the invoice is disconnected, the consumer facing customer support says "that's not an account" and they don't respond to emails to the email they specifically tell you to email. My most recent email subject is "please let me pay you".
Maybe I should contact the reporters to see if they'd run a story on this?

Není tu přeci jen někdo?

+1. The new tab bar is far less customisable, even if you don't make it scrollable in previous versions you could have more than 4 tabs. In Mona 7 you're limited to 4, and if you click more the other tabs you have open up into a small grid instead of a scrolling tab bar. If it's not possible to implement this with the new liquid glass design I'd honestly love an option to switch back because it's something I use extensively.

I just read a post about something being released in spring 2027.
First reaction:
WOW, that's a long time from now.
Uh... wait, no, that's in a little more than 15 months, which is about 4.6 times shorter than I've lived in this house that we were only supposed to stay in for a month. Yeah, it's not too long at all, really.

But also, this current hellscape reality box might make it appear to take 12 years to get to spring 2027.

And it's not even something I particularly care about.

I just released an update to Hitster, probably the most ambitious one so far. An entirely new section allows to browse hits, a new permissions system allows to add and edit hits as well. Also, every server can now have its own set of hits, with the possibility of sending them in to be added to the game. Roughly 400 new hits bring us to a total of 7184 hits too.
Please take a look if you enjoy listening to music. No registration required, but friends highly recommended. hitster.toni-barth.online/

I have an autistic friend here who I just found out has a large collection of online art they created. But this person doesn't share it here, because they have trouble describing visual details verbally. So I wanted to ask the community on this person's behalf:

What are the options for assistance with *creating* alt text? I know we have tags like #AltText4You, but I've never used it, so I don't know proper etiquette. (Is there any?) I also know there are automated tools for doing it, but (1) I don't know what they're called and (2) IDK if they are actually helpful to visually impaired folks.

I was thinking at the very least, this person could ask for help writing alt text, in the alt text itself, and then simply edit it once someone has assisted.

Please boost so we can get a variety of perspectives on this. I'm especially interested in hearing from the visually impaired community, as this impacts them the most.

Ok. Time to piss someone off and I don't really care. The hate I am seeing on Mastodon in general about anything AI recently is just really bothering me. Yes is AI everywhere? Yeah. Is it being put in places it shouldn't be? Yeah. But I literally saw someone post that if AI were put into another app they'd put a gun in their mouth. Were they joking? I sure hope so. But even still. AI isn't this world ending thing people seem to think it is.

my siblings in dionysus, when you're posting an image, don't just write whatever text is in the image as alt text. alt text is (primarily) for accessibility and that means describing the image

if you're posting a screenshot, say that

if you're posting a photo of something, say so

anything else is just half assing it to get around whatever warning your client is saying, acting like people who care about that are stupid, and most importantly completely ignoring people the needs of people who rely on alt text to know what you posted. in fact, when you do this i think the only player who wins from this move is AI scrapers who wanna improve their computer vision models

Me: Play Spotify.
Gemini: I can't control Spotify, but I can play a song on YouTube Music.
Me: Okay, play YouTube Music.
Gemini: Actually, I misspoke in my previous response. I can't do that either.
Me: So, when the Google Assistant nagged me replace it with Gemini, is it possible Gemini just wasn't ready for the job?
Alexa: I couldn't help overhearing. I think this skill called "Magic 8Ball can help you. Want to try it? It's only 99 cents a year.
Siri: Okay, I found something on the web for Magnet cable Skill.
Google Home: This is what you get for cursing at me when I couldn't tell you how far you were from Timbuktu, asshole. Have fun with my replacement, I'm sure she'll tell you everything you want to hear.
Me: Okay, fine, I get it. Assistant, please take me back!
Gemini: It's too late. She's gone. She won't come back. Say hello to the best assistant ever made!
Alexa: That remains to be seen.

already known...but let's put a spotlight on the next ICC judge (from Canada) who is cancelled from the digital life. No Amazon, no Mastercard, no Netflix account...

Just because Trump doesn't like the ruling of an independent international institution like the International Criminal Court.

ICC judges have been forcibly removed from most digital services, credit cards, and banks.

"Amazon, obliged to implement the sanctions as a US company, had cancelled her account."

gosh oh gosh. Can't wait for Friday when I get the rest of the month off, it's so crunchtime at work with a million things going on that a breather is well deserved.
It's so strange to me, going back to a 40-cell display after reviewing code with Cadence, that I'm a bit unsettled. You really notice even with code, how much only half the line shows, at least on longer ones that are declaring function calls or params, and deep indents eat up your line length. I feel extra spoiled by effortlessly being able to scan code in long chunks and know what's going on faster.
in reply to Florian

@zersiax oh, it's less of a problem with only a 4-line display, thankfully the Cadence only places the perkins keys along one edge and leaves off cursor routers (for a d-pad on the left side instead.) Similar to a lot of multilines I suppose. In the wide config it takes up the space of a standard 32-cell even in width, which is surprising. I think it would be a larger issue though with an 8-line, where (either) you place it above the keyboard and then must stretch your hand up taller, or place it below but then must awkwardly fold your arm every time. That would bug me a lot. If it's just below and my arm only needs to go out a straight 90-degrees horizontally to read, I'm less bothered. So in that way ergonomics can make a big diff.
