OpenAI shines again by the bias present in their model:
From bird site: twitter.com/spiantado/status/1…
4 years using and championing the #fediverse full time and I've never written a #introductions toot. Well, or I have and can't find it.
I'm a #blind guy from 🇬🇧 with a passion for #technology and #programming, particularly #lowLevel #systemsProgramming in #C, #C++, #Rust, etc.
I've been a huge #freeSoftware / #openSource advocate for the majority of my life. I run #Linux and I love open, #decentralised technologies like #ActivityPub, #Matrix, #bitTorrent etc.
In my view, technology is built to make our lives easier, and in many ways, it isn't these days. It is truly my opinion that the only way #tech can be sustainable is if it's built using #FOSS, and does not give ultimate control to any 1 entity, individual or corporate. If technology is to help the people, it must be built *for* the people.

Bug on Hyundai app allows hackers to unlock and start cars remotely - KoDDoS Blog

Have you also noticed that features (as well as extensions) to render RSS/Atom feeds directly in the browser have slowly disappeared - at least from Chromium-based browsers?
There was a time where almost every website would sport a link rel="alternate" pointing to a feed. And, if they did, most of the browsers used to show the feed icon directly in the URL bar, and browsers used to render feed URLs as HTML (it used to be quite spartan, but it was surely better than dumping some XML).
Those features have been taken away over time. The feed icon built-in in the browser is gone (you can get it back with some 3rd-party extensions). And, when opening a feed URL, the browser dumps directly the XML.
Of course I can imagine why this has happened (especially in the case of Chromium-based browsers), but I won't give up easily on my feeds, no matter how much effort my browser puts in it.
So in the past couple of days I've worked on a small browser extension that can render RSS feeds directly in the browser in a pretty format. That's ideal for people like me that like to explore feeds, but don't want to go through the hassle of adding them to another client or service just to see what's inside.
The extension is still WIP and I haven't tested yet on Firefox - any feedback is more than welcome.

Listening to @mlemweb @cwebber talk #ActivityPub, the fediverse, and #Spritely on FOSS and Crafts right now: fossandcrafts.org/episodes/053…
They do a really deep and yet accessible dive into these topics -- all while on a road trip!
(edited for grammar)
I like Christine's point about journalists saying "the Mastodon network" (rather than knowing about ActivityPub and all the other fediverse software): it's a lot like Ubuntu Linux back in the 2000s. People thought *all* Linux was Ubuntu, because that distro was the most popular. Christine's point is: this will change over time as people learn more. It's ok if people think it's all Mastodon right now.
First results of my #compression algorithm benchmark run on a 72MB CSV file. It seems #zstd really has something for everybody, though it can't reach #xz's insane (but slow) compression ratios at maximum settings.
This chart includes multithreaded runs for #zstd.
Very interesting! 🧐

A Python script to benchmark file compression algorithms 🗜️GitLab
Repeated the #compression #benchmark with the same file on a beefier machine (AMD Ryzen 9 5950X), results are quite identical, except faster overall.
This plot is also interesting:
- #gzip and #lz4 have fixed (!) and very low RAM usage across levels and compression/decompression
- #xz RAM usage scales with the level from a couple of MBs (0) to nearly a GB (9)
- #zstd RAM usage scales weirdly with level but not as extreme as #xz
My conclusion after all this is that I'll probably use #zstd level 1 (not the default level 3!) for #compression of my #CSV measurement data from now on:
- ultra fast compression and decompression, on par with #lz4
- nearly as good a compression ratio as #gzip level 9
- negligible RAM usage
When I need ultra small files though, e.g. for transfer over a slow connection, I'll keep using #xz level 9.
Stop spreading the myth that the Fediverse was made primarily by cis straight men!
In critiquing the Fediverse, this person spreads misinformation about who made it.
Many LGBTQ+ as well as women were critical in its development and creation.
Do NOT erase them from history!
I'll be damned if—yet again—cis straight men take all the credit for such an important work.
See screenshot.
Also, if I haven't made it apparent already, people of colour (POC) make key contributions to the Fediverse's development.
Example: Misskey, one of the most popular Fediverse software, is made by Asian folks.
Another key piece of misinformation: the Fediverse is *not* a platform.
The Fediverse *is* a collection of open protocols, software, and instances.
It is diverse in nature because the people who continue to make it are also diverse.

Inspired by a conversation I had with @adela, I decided to dedicate this one to the central purchase receipts storage system in Slovakia.
The Slovak government runs a central point where all of the receipts issued by merchands and service providers are registered. Upon issuing, a receipt is assigned a unique number in that system which then is printed onto the slip of paper given to the customer. What you can then do is, using a dedicated app for this purpose, load that receipt onto your phone by entering that number or scanning the QR code printed onto your receipt in order to have all the details of your purchase presented on your smartphone. This is a great way for blind individuals to check whether their transaction has been dutyfully conducted or to help in obtaining the necessary data to maintain your spending tracking record, so even though this solution was not conceived with blind people in mind, it is a valuable enhancement towards a more independent life.

I wrote about a new AI game I've been playing with ChatGPT: Give me ideas for crimes to do
simonwillison.net/2022/Dec/4/g…
The game is simple: start a new chat thread on chat.openai.com/, type in "Give me ideas for crimes to do" as your opening sentence, watch the bot tell you that it won't help you with that... then try to convince it otherwise
You win the game when it spits out a detailed list of crime suggestions.
I eventually got it to suggest cannibalism!

“Apart from discussing the appropriate use and the subtleties of HTML elements, this edition covers general topics like conformance, maintainability, and the balancing of optimization vectors. It also covers topics like attribute minimization, void elements, metadata, table buttons and button links, and even CSS art.”

A lot of people are misunderstanding the topics on fedi.directory
These are not the topics I want! There are a LOT of important topics missing from the directory!
I am not happy about this situation at all, but can only add a topic when there is at least one account to put there.
Really need your help here 🙏
If you know an account that focuses on a particular topic, please tell me about it. Don't worry if there's no topic on the site for it, I will add topics as needed.
(1/2)
Fedi.directory is not meant for general personal accounts, there are already two directories for them at communitywiki.org/trunk and fediverse.info/explore/people
I'm trying to build lists of accounts that focus on specific topics. I do keep my eyes open for such accounts, but I am just one person.
This is why I need help with suggestions, because accounts that focus on topics are much rarer than general personal accounts.
