If you need a blind accessible smart scale in the EU, Lidl's Silver Crest SBF75 body analyser is a pretty good choice for 18 euros. The only inaccessible bit is when it asks for a 6 digit code during bluetooth pairing.

Everything else works beautifully, the Health for You app is completely accessible via VoiceOver (not sure about Android), including the measurements history, weight, water intakes, calories data, etc.

The scale also supports up to 8 people based on a reference measurement during your profile setup, which can be done on the phone through the app as well. All in all, this is a fantastic experience compared to a lot of other, way more expensive bluetooth smart scales. #a11y #blind

I am sure there is, it's just a matter of experimenting which is unfortunately not a good idea for your wallet.

Given that Lidl used to have talking bathroom and food scales, blood pressure monitors, I figured I'd give this a try because their brand is surprisingly reliable for an affordable price and luckily it worked out beautifully. I've heard Xiaomi's scales also work, though their app is not as good.

Boom Radio asks listeners to help fight against the BBC radiotoday.co.uk/2024/03/boom-…
in reply to David Goldfield

I read that on Radio Today. I cannot see writing to the BBC will make an enormous difference. Once it has the bit between its teeth, the BBC will usually move forward with its plans. While I listen to Boom Radio a little, I'll be interested to hear what this new station might sound like. If they really wanted to, they have a wealth of material they could draw upon which hasn't been broadcast for many many years. There's a lot I can think of which would be wonderful to hear again. So I'm very open to them giving it a try at least as an experiment.

So I wanted to install a font on Linux and Google said the way to do that in Ubuntu Gnome is to double click the font and click "install". So I did that and it worked

Except

On the italic variant (just the plain italic; italic bold worked fine) if I click "install" it thinks for a moment and instead of reading "installed" it goes back to a plain "install" button like I hadn't done anything?? What's happening??

in reply to mcc

in general, it's true that "don't confuse users" is a guiding principle, but mainly in the sense of "if the user can't do anything about it, then what's the point of offloading a shit job to them".

We also have bounced between extremes—dumping obscure error messages in the UI, or hiding everything under a generic "sorry, you're fucked" message (and I complained about both), so it's not like we're consistently choosing the "no feedback" route.

Copied from Reddit, of particular note for screen reader users as YouTube's shorts player is basically trash.

YouTube's "shorts" player removes a significant amount of functionality, especially the ability to jump forward and back in the video. Every video that loads in the "shorts" player is actually a regular video under the hood, and by slightly changing the URL you can get the same video to load in the regular player along with all of the functionality it allows.

To do this, look in the URL bar of a video playing in the "shorts" player, where you should see the text shorts/. (That is, the word "shorts" followed by a single forward slash.) Replace that text with watch?v= and load the new URL. (That is, the word "watch" followed by a question mark, letter v, and equals sign.) The same video should appear in the regular player.

As a concrete example:

youtube.com/shorts/SXHMnicI6Pg

becomes

youtube.com/watch?v=SXHMnicI6P…

Hope this serves you well.

I use K-9 Mail (aka Thunderbird Mobile) on my phone, installed via #FDroid. Last week, K-9 showed up in the list of pending updates in the Google Play Store, despite it not having installed that apk, and not being able to update it (and it wants to install the same version as is already installed). I can't clear it from the "pending updates" list. Unfortunately this seems to be a new #Android Play Store bug (see forum.f-droid.org/t/google-pla…). Reported to Google.

@IzzyOnDroid have you had any experience with this bug?

in reply to Ozzie D, NP-hard

Developers usually ship the AAB to PlayStore for deployment. Someone found the `versionCode` used in AABs was (by some default?) set higher than that with the APKs. As `versionCode` is what Android uses to tell versions apart, PlayStore thinks its version is newer. The stupid thing is trying to update something where the signature won't match – regardless of newer or not. Not sure if that's the case here, though.

We are happy to announce the Librem 5 + Librem AweSIM cellular service bundle and payment plan starting at $99/mo (4GB Data), or $129/mo (10GB Data), or $169/mo (Unlimited Data).

Today, #AndroidAppRain at the #IzzySoftRepo only brings you 8 updated apps – and 3 removed (for the same reason as those yesterday: I'm still cleaning up the debug certificates).

And if you want to see how the IzzyOnDroid services are doing, there's now, thanks to @SylvieLorxu – a status monitor: monitor.izzysoft.de/status/izz… (should it be broken it will be entirely my fault of course should I dare playing with its configuration, while learning Ansible 🙈

If you use a screen reader and have a Github account, consider commenting on this feature request:

If you don't use a screen reader, please boost this post rather than commenting on the Github issue.

People who use #ScreenReaders, imagine a feature on your instance where you can automatically hide any post that contains images/videos without alt text.

If you reply with an opinion and YOU PERSONALLY don't need alt text for accessibility reasons, I will probably block you.
