Why are my live regions not working? by @patrick_h_lauke

"Live regions have a reputation for being "flaky" and inconsistent. While this can be attributed in part to shortcomings in current implementations, the problem can also be caused by developers misunderstanding how live regions are intended to work."

We have phones. They have cpu, gpu, memory, storage and MORE than enough chutzpah to be AI assistants. The Rabbit R1 is a bizarre and repetitive product. I admire big swings, but even this is just an Android phone in Rabbit’s clothing theverge.com/2024/4/30/2414583…

They have CPU, GPU, memory and storage, but they also have sandboxing and API restrictions that effectively prevent any third-party from making a "good" AI assistant. You can't make or receive calls without annoying user prompts, you can't access call audio to do transcripts / summarization, have Alexa-style wake word detection without a massive drain on battery, manage alarms / calendar / reminders and so on. Not that Rabbit does this, but any good AI assistant will. Android is better at this than iOS but only slightly.

IMO this is a far more important antitrust issue than petty squabbles between big American companies and big European companies about who deserves what share of the pie. I'm fine with the App Store as long as there's a "do everything" entitlement that is fairly granted to apps that want to do unorthodox things we don't have system APIs for.

Echándole un vistazo al BOE de hoy, parece que hay algo sobre influencers, aunque el RD está redactado de manera tan elíptica que me cuesta entenderlo. boe.es/diario_boe/txt.php?id=B…

💙 20 years.
💙 10 countries.
💙 1 enlargement.

On 1 May 2004, the citizens of 🇨🇾 🇨🇿 🇪🇪 🇭🇺 🇱🇻 🇱🇹 🇲🇹 🇵🇱 🇸🇰 🇸🇮 became citizens of the EU.

Since then, we have witnessed growth and prosperity. Real wages have doubled from 2004 to 2023 in these ten countries, while poverty levels have halved.

Our Union has benefitted from more innovations. The free movement of goods, services, capital and people, have brought greater opportunities for people and businesses.

Hi friends,

The alt-text.org alt text library project needs a new leader, I have brain cancer.

I built a working, scalable, proof of concept library of shared alt text with fuzzy matching.

I'd like to connect with the #accessibility dev community. I want to hand the project off to a team or a leader if anyone is willing to take it over.

Github: github.com/alt-text-org
WIP MVP: a site designed for writing alt text with a private library: my.alt-text.org

Boosts appreciated

A few extra seconds of your time it takes to add a good image description can really improve someone's day.

"To a totally blind person like me it means a lot to have a picture in my mind of your images, especially the animal pics."

"I don't know what it is, but as a blind user it's making me emotional to be able to actually interact with content."

My much older brother tells the story, from his childhood in the 1950s, of my mother driving the car through the countryside and narrating what she saw so that her blind (from diabetes) husband could enjoy the view. My brother would lie down on the back seat, close his eyes and see the world the way his father saw it.

I think of that every time there’s a request here to include ALT text descriptions on Mastodon. It’s such a small ask with such a huge upside.

This is proper use of machine learning as opposed to the idiocy we see in the west.

These systems are great at correlating a lot of data and noticing patterns, and then alerting humans to do stuff like proactive maintenance.

from the times' latest pro-israel propaganda piece. as a teacher who does 4'33" in my classroom every quarter, this is truly the weakest shit i've ever read.

john cage was all about "non-intentional" music, sound that is not set into motion by the composer, and 4'33" asks us to listen to the sounds around us with the same care as we would listen to a concerto. the sounds of students protesting injustice on your campus are absolutely the sound and texture of the moment, you utter fraud

Say what you will about Tesla, but they were the only car company who said they both require a court-ordered warrant before sharing your vehicle's location data AND tell customers about demands for their data.

This finding comes from the office of Sen. Ron Wyden, which asked the association representing automakers how their members respond to law enforcement requests for location information collected from internet-connected cars and trucks.
