@mattblaze @ai6yr HP was founded and ran by engineers for a long time before the MBAs and the accountants took over. During that time HP was THE BRAND. It's amazing how far they fell in brand loyalty.
Engineering is about making things better and improving manufacturing loops. MBAs are about extracting as much money as possible for the shareholders - - forgetting that society as a whole is a shareholder as well in the long run.
@ai6yr When HP divested its (good quality) test equipment business, Agilent/Keysight were very fortunate that they didn't get rights to use the original company brand name.
@mattblaze It's such a shame, the company was very progressive, and ahead of its time. I remember reading HP Research papers in the 90's about how to make more easily recycled or upgradable computers, in order to minimize electronic waste. Also a lot of early literature about good corporate governance, etc. in business school studies, etc. Amazing to see them fall so far.
So, what people don't realize is that "HP" is no longer HP anymore. It is now run by some kind of metastasized parasitic organism that has only one goal, which is to extract as much money as possible out of its "customers" who don't realize it's become a giant parasite, thinking it's a "trusted brand" (which it once was). Sad to see it. Never buy anything from that company, NEVER.

As an aside, any #blind folks know how to accessibly find a Matrix ID in @element? At the very least I want to find if this person is coming through a bridge, then shut that down if needed.
And this is why Element accessibility is important. When I review the interface, I see what look like a ton of noisy stale ARIA announcements hanging around at the bottom of the interface, making it very hard to do the "move to the bottom to find if new interface elements were added to the DOM" trick. It's not just an inconvenient annoyance. It makes defending against potential pig butchering and other scam attempts much harder. How can I feel confident on a network if I can't safely use its flagship client?
@Nolan Darilek I think using tab and shift+tab to navigate in the message content will allow you to focus the profile picture of that person and activate with the enter key. After this, switch your screen reader into browse mode, find heading level 2 saying profile and find the matrix handle a few lines below after the display name and the status. Also if you are back on linux, except of @Element there is another more light weight very accessible #GTK4 based matrix client called #fractal.
Fractal seemed pretty simple when I used it last. In particular, it didn't seem to have support for spaces, which was rough since I'm in lots of rooms, many of them with similar names like "General". :) Did I miss something? I guess it'll work in a pinch, but I'd eventually like to use Matrix for voice and such so really wish a more full-featured client was accessible.

I thought rsync/scp was good enough for SSH file transfers. Is the reason to include SSH in curl convenient of using a single utility for all file transfers?
@vmiheer it was added to libcurl almost twenty years ago, to offer easy sftp and scp transfers in addition to ftp(s) for an application, yes. Actually paid for by Adobe.
With my own humble ways of running c-driven network code (years ago) I know how much research this must be to make it really work on so many protocols, so many settings, so many options etc. Really strong stuff. I hope people tell that often enough to you and your contributors.

@klittle667 they're not bowing down to anything. The option was remove the facility for end to end backups (which has been very slow to uptake in the UK anyway), or risk not being able to sell here. More worrying is our government's slide toward further stupidity, I'd say.
@cachondo That's kind of what I meant. I mean my partner's argument to it was ""what's the big deal? What have you got to hide" and she didn't seem to understand the prinsipal. It doesn't matter what I have, but I should be able to at least semi-trust a provider not just to blindly hand over my data to whomever comes asking.
@cachondo @klittle667 Yes exactly. I don't know anyone who had actually switched this feature on. The protection we get now is the same as OneDrive, Dropbox et al. I'm not happy with the government for making this request but think Apple did the only thing they could. I'm happier they didn't add a backdoor to the system.

I tried to find when #Signal has published the most recent #security audit, and it turns out they either never published an audit or their code was never audited at all.
The closest thing I found is the list community.signalusers.org/t/ov… which only cites research papers and some evidence that in 2018 Signal paid Doyensec, but nothing got published as the result. Even then, it looks like the apps were not audited for more than 5 years since then.

Why don't you include the federated #XMPP (aka Jabber) protocol as an alternative? There are plenty of good clients for the phone and PC, like #Conversations, #gajim, or #dino. With the modern extensions like Omemo E2EE and various improvements for mobile use, it is very useable even on phones, while keeping the flexibility and resilience of a federated service (just like the Fediverse).

I need to say it : #XMPP is also a good replacement. The first step to use it is not easy for everyone but once it is done it is way simpler than Matrix. My mother use XMPP with no problem! 😊
@feudjais Your mother uses it because you set it up for her and you are willing to be her tech support if things don't work. Most people don't have a "you" (someone who is that passionate about #xmpp that they are willing to do all the heavy lifting) in their lives.
@maple @feudjais my mother uses quicksy because I told her to install it, I have not done more "tech support" than this and it has been more than 5 years, and we have a/v calls regularly. (And she really is not technical, I regrettably have to do a lot of tech support on other stuff; XMPP just worked)
