@adam I have yet to be disappointed in a Vornado product. I bought one as a space heater for under my desk at work, another as a space heater for here at the house when my furnace went out, and I saved a friend's behind and bought a whole room circulator fan when her AC went out.

I think it just needs freon, but trying to save up for that isn't going to happen this summer! lol! try a 120 service call plus what ever is needed for the freon I thinjk the last time it was done back in june of 2022, the grand total was just over 400 dollars. the trailer park paid for it that time, but we aren't renting anymore, we are buyuing the trailer.

Camera does not work, importing backup seemed to work. Then the window content disappeared, I closed the window but the process still kept running. Killing all Tauri processes made it possible to start it again. Looked great - upon first interaction everything in the window disappears again. 🤷♂️

@mray have you tried the environment variables from the forum post?
Also that the camera doesn't work on linux is expected at the moment, there is an issue in tauri about this. looks like it will be a more complex issue to solve.
@mray it is useful for us to find out how to solve it. we may bake in the best working option into the app. It is not as hard as you think, environment variables are a basic thing, just start the app from the terminal by it's file path and write the variables in front:

I usually don't post during #AudioMo but I went to a great organ concert today and captured it with my stealth recording kit. I thought the results where pretty nice for what they are, so I guess here's the Sarabande by Georg Friedrich Händel, recorded on the 2000 Kleis organ located in the Händel House in Halle (Saale), Germany. Its the biggest organ in Halle I think with 4200 pipes. Sounds pretty impressive, let me tell you. A few more recordings follow in the thread.

My office's old relay-based elevator has simple buzzers / tone generators, but that's only for confirmig that a button was pressed, not for announcing floors or doors opening. The one where I live just does nothing.
It's actually part of the accessibility requirement here. When an elevator arrives at a floor, it must have an audible indicator. This was usually a bell. Better yet, this indicator must be a single tone when going up, and a double tone when going down. That way, in a bank of elevators, a blind person can know that the elevator they wanted has arrived based on where they're going without being able to see any light-up panels, and also track where the door is.
@matt With That said, voice based announcements are pretty common here. Nowhere near universal, but with public buildings especially, yeah you'l hear them more often than not.
@matt We have one at the shopping mall narby that does floor announcements, doors opening and doors closing announcements, as well as announcing the direction in which it's going. In two languages, Polish and English. I've seen it be two or three samples behind realtime.
The "one tone up, two tones down" thing does appear here sometimes, though many people aren't aware of it. It's usually an electronic bell for us, think "airplane seatbelt indicator". ADA-style Beeping as you pass floors is super rare, I've seen it and love the elevators that do it for the "cool factor", but yeah, very very uncommon.

In March of 2010, I set up an always streaming set of microphones at my childhood home, then using an old, small form factor Pentium III desktop computer running Windows XP. In the late summer of 2014, I installed a similar setup at my New York apartment, this time using an old laptop running Windows 7. In 2015, I switched to a Raspberry Pi 2 model B running Liquidsoap, added 24/7 archiving, and installed a second, nearly identical setup at the New York apartment.
I had to take the New York stream down when we moved five years ago, and my parents' have moved since then, but the stream there still exists.
What follows is a presentation highlighting some of the more unusual things these streaming setups recordedover a period between 2011 and 2020.

Even with close confirmation I sometimes close my terminal and think "OH FUCK NO." Coming soon to Ghostty, you can undo that. 🥰 (Technical details: we keep the terminal running for a configurable time in the background before terminating for real, similar to email undo send).

This is potentially very dangerous. If you realize you have a destructive operation running which you did not intend to run, some users might have a "close close close" reflex, without realizing that it won't, in fact, stop the operation.
This way, you go from running rm -rf / for half a second to doing that for 10 seconds.
Same with media, I have a "close reflex" whenever I'm trying to figure out the structure of some audio file, pass the wrong parameters to Sox's play and get white noise blasted at me at full volume.

Let's break down the basic economy class feature: seating space.
The regular one on B789 (787-9):
32" pitch (that's the distance between two seat) and 3" recline (mean 3" if personal space invasion).
Now the new Allegris on B789 (787-9):
31" pitch (one inch less,, 2.54cm) and 5" recline (2 more inches of personal space invasion). In short 3 more inches (7.6cm) of incomfort for tall people like me.
And people wonder why I hate flying (in Economy). But simply put I'm tall and when I seat my knee already touch the front seat. And it gets worse over. Now when the person in front recline the seat, it hurts. I gave seen: 1. people doing violently (slaming the seat back) 2. people insisting they must when there is no room, and waiting I get to the washroom to do it so I can't seat back. Got scolded my Swiss crew for that.
And then airline charge a premium for "front" seat (bulkhead or emergency exit). They are less convenient like less storage, no bag on the floor, or screen that must be stowed away. But I guess they don't discount that inconvenience, but they do charge more money for the leg room. And even if the seats are empty, you can GFY, at least on Air Canada.
People in front should be allowed to recline their seats all the way. If you don't fit, you should take it up with the airline and the government to make laws guaranteeing minimums! (Please do!)
Marc Garneau (who just died) helped gut air passenger rights similar to this, and we've got a long way ahead to get some of them back and then even more!

"Decide if the size of a contract is reasonable." An ENORMOUS sociocognitive task that human employees at the VA are probably incredibly good at. All that wisdom, tacit knowledge, years of experience, complex work of our human minds, they are just thinking we replace that instead of enable that. Shameful. So little curiosity about our own minds.
Reading this continues to explain to me (finally, and at devastating scale) why I was SO frustrated trying to be a scientist working with software engineers building edtech who would NEVER listen to behavioral science about any aspect of human behavior and instrumented the worst systems for ever actually learning about human behavior. Just constantly thinking we could magically derive answers to our questions. And this was well before AI was used in this way! The mental fragility was there.
I honestly find the technical details of LLMs quite interesting -- like I find *many* models quite interesting. But the mad interaction effects, the amplification of existing exploitable fragilities in our mental models, that is boggling too. I feel it is necessary to understand just how cruel our systems already were (how we deal with health, and concepts of efficiency in a society that won't take care of its children), as a core piece of this and who gets to use this and in what way.

@soc @RandamuMaki We like feedback when it's constructive and gives arguments. Telling volunteers to just "stop it" when they're trying to sustain the future the project is not especially constructive – hope that makes sense.
@soc In an environment where you just want to open a file, work on it, and then go on with your life, having banners which need to be clicked away adds another process to the work. This is counter-intuitive, bothersome, and those who have the capability to help out will have already moved to help out. All you're doing is nagging the end user. Just like how xscreensaver's "your distro is doing you a disservice" message got removed, it's a matter of time before these banners are.
@RandamuMaki The banner appears once every six months. We think that's not a lot for something that people typically use every day. One click, and you won't see it again for half a year.
You say "those who have the capability to help out will have already moved to help out" – yet we've had an increase in donations since we added the once-every-half-year banner, so your claim is simply not true.
Donations are vital to keep LibreOffice strong and provide the world with a FOSS office suite.
I might just have the misfortune of seeing it more frequently as I have to reinstall and use libreoffice on multiple computers on the regular. If it saves that timestamp somewhere this might get wiped in the process. It just seems to appear every other time I open it, which grates me.
