Ever since I switched to #GNU #Linux in my private life, using #Windows at work gives me near-daily headaches. I have full admin rights, yet I constantly fight the system: forced updates, inconsistent behavior, sluggish UI, weird errors buried in the registry.

I used to think this was just how #computers worked. But after experiencing the #freedom and clarity of #FOSS, Windows feels more like an obstacle than a tool.

Going back feels wrong.

@esoteric_programmer Having come from a Linux background, I was rather surprised to discover upon using a Windows machine seriously for the first time that some of the error messages were displayed as 32-bit hex error codes. Searching the Web for help often leads to interminable forum threads in which people who don’t know what’s causing the error try to help others who don’t know either. Diagnosing such errors would be a good task for a specialized LLM.

Twenty years ago today we released the little web framework we’d developed at the Lawrence Journal-World to help us build news sites and apps. > We should be asking hard questions about how these systems are built, who they exploit, and who they ultimately serve.

What is the point of asking those questions if not to do something concrete by saying no?

I feel bad for people who are in a difficult situation because their employers are mandating use of generative models. I'm fortunate not to be in that position myself, at least not yet. But for me, saying no doesn't feel like a luxury; it feels like foregoing a luxury.

a new Poly CCX-700 OpenSIP phone appears, and after extensive updates from v7.1 to 9.x, it's ready for work.

also, yes. I have a SIP desk phone for Zoom, Teams, and regular calls.. at home. it also has a webcam. surprising, surely.

life has come to this because the usual computer based versions are so terribly unreliable and inconsistent that I cannot rely on any of them on Mac, Linux, browser based on FreeBSD, or even on Windows.

at least with the desk phone this is it's only role, that's all it does. I never wanted the modern design pattern: "this one device does everything marginally!" I don't like smartphones, I don't even want a touchscreen phone, and when I'm away from the phone I am unavailable on purpose.

For sake of trying something new, we introduced #MapComplete ( @MapComplete ) as the first editor for our 6 new mappers. While there were some rough edges, it enabled them to contribute photos to #Panoramax.

@MapComplete I like your "police call box" and was surprised to find two in London. Well, the 2nd is not a Tardis, just a column. So started to answer "your" questions.
The style question is hare, as I do not know the terms; pictures would help.
I could upload that picture, but only after converting from png to jpg :-(
Colour selecting is funny.
Luckily no question for the real Tardis note has roof:shape=quadruple_saltbox, a nonsense of user maze88, isn't it?

My book Drystone – A Life Rebuilt is out in just three weeks.

I really believe in this book. It’s honest about important things, quietly subversive, funny, easy to read, and I’ve poured everything into writing it and getting it into the world as far as I can.

If you can, I’d love your help. A share, a preorder, a message to someone who might love it, it all makes a difference.

Pred 100 tisici lety debatovaly prvni pramati kocka a druha pramati kocka o nejlepsi evolucni strategii.

Prvni pramati kocka si vsimla, ze lide maji hodne jidla a teplo v jeskyni. Nejlepsi strategie je okopirovat krik lidskych mladat a tvarit se roztomile. Cele generace pak budou spat ve vyhratych lidskych jeskynich. Lide je budou krmit a drbat.

To je nedustojne! Oponovala druha pramati kocka. Nejlepsi evolucni strategie je okopirovat vzor srsti nejdesivejsiho predatora. Cele generace se pak budou valet bez obav na strome a vsechno od nich utece.

Jak to dopadlo vime. Ocelota je nam lito.
