The @gajim XMPP chat application has modernized quite a bit and evolved a lot compared to when I last used it 15 years ago!

Also, I made a simple enhancement UX request there, and it was fixed within a day. Pretty cool: dev.gajim.org/gajim/gajim/-/is…

Stříkat to nechci. Do dvou týdnu to budu nucen nejspíš všechno dát pryč. Dle dlouhodobých předpovědí ani nečekám, že by okurky nepotkal stejný osud. No. Každý rok nemůže být posvícení. Aspoň, že krajina se zelená. #zahrada

Někdo zde psal, že prý nezáleží, jakou verzi Mastodonu používáte. Ale verze 4.4 přináší docela dost novinek:

📌 **Profil a síť:** Záložka „Featured“ pro hashtagy/účty, karusel připnutých příspěvků, widget s počtem společných sledujících a možnost odstranit followera bez blokace.

📋 **Seznamy:** Snazší správa – přidávání/odebírání účtů do listů přímo z profilů a seznamů sledujících/sledovaných.

V případě potřeby stačí napsat zprávu a můžeme vám i pomoct.

If you're running macOS Tahoe beta, this Shortcut using the built-in Models action works wonders. Activate from the Share Sheet or just run and choose an audio file.

Transcribes, summarizes, breaks out key points, asks you for a title, then creates a Bear note with the summary + full transcript: icloud.com/shortcuts/0729f71ac…

Redundant Engagement Counts?

Diagram of redundant and mismatched engagement counts

How would people feel about a future version of Bookface removing the engagement counts from the Action Button? Now that the response info is reduced to an icon and a number the count on the Action Button with the same icon is redundant and makes the UI unnecessarily cluttered.

I know since the beginning of Bookface some people have found the engagement counts on the buttons too "busy" or "distracting" but before I remove them I thought I'd ask how people feel about that?

I don't know if anyone else has noticed it, but sometimes the engagement counts and responses don't agree. I *think* this is because the engagement counts are subtracting your own interactions? So in the screenshot above it's not counting my 2 comments and not counting my "Like" on the buttons, but is counting them in the response totals. Getting rid of the counts on the buttons would eliminate this inconsistency.

Thoughts?

in reply to Matthias

Just tried it on my dev server. Looks like hiding it only works in Frio? It seems the themes have to have {{if $item.legacy_activities}} to support hiding it.

You said the demand for this was very high. Was it an objection to showing the names or showing the totals or both?

I've been working on a theme similar to "Bookface" only based on Vier instead of Frio. One thing that has frustrated me are the engagement counts/lists because the code for them comes into the theme template already having been formatted in PHP, so then I have to use CSS to hide the bits I don't want which gets messy.

It would be so much better if only the DATA were coming into the templates, meaning the total and, I guess optionally, the array of names and links for that response. IMO no HTML formatting should be happening in PHP functions, it should be formatted in the templates. But changing it would require a bunch of edits to core files, which would break all the existing themes.

As far as I can tell the *only* reason it's being formatted in PHP is to handle singular and plural cases of the extraneous verbiage that I don't feel is necessary in the first place (which is why I've hidden all of it in Bookface).

@Random Penguin
On the Share or Like button, you only see a mouseover that displays the names of the users, but no clickable preview with a link to the user profile. This was seen as a shortcoming. Many users not only want to see who has clicked a button, but also want to jump to the profile.

It was therefore discussed in the project whether a separate view was needed in which the user clicks are displayed and the profiles can be called up. If I remember the discussion correctly, the behaviour should be similar to Mastodon.

Contribution preview

Sub-template with the targets for the user profiles.

Unfortunately, I can't find the issues at the moment.

in reply to Random Penguin

@Random Penguin
Oh, that's great. I think something like that would fit very well. It connects the separate functions in Friendica and provides real added value. I think that was the goal in the issues and could be realised identically for Frio and Vier.

Please bear in mind that I am quoting the issues from memory, as I unfortunately cannot find them.

in reply to Random Penguin

github.com/friendica/friendica/issues/13620 is one of a few open issues discussing aspects of this. But the discussion here is much more mature and further along already.
in reply to Random Penguin

But changing it would require a bunch of edits to core files, which would break all the existing themes.

Maybe this is something we could make an issue for and see if there's support for it? I don't think other themes besides Vier and Frio are maintained (and Vier is barely maintained, which IMO makes sense given how powerful but also really complex themes are, not just being CSS overrides) so we'd just have to update those two.

Also I think the count mismatch should be reported, as long as other themes show them. I can do that using/referencing your image if that's ok.
About the like count differences I wonder if it's because the line includes all reactions and thus counts that emoji as one as well...?

This entry was edited (4 months ago)
in reply to Matthias

That would explain the count mismatch on the "likes" since the emoji is shown separately among the Action Buttons. I'd have to double check but I think the count mismatch on the Comments is the one on the Comment button is just comments by other people while the lower one includes your own comments/replies. So in my example there were two of my own replies and three from others. Still this obviously isn't clear, they look like errors.
in reply to Random Penguin

Ah, alright. Completely agree that it's still unclear, and that it should be fixed so one or the other is chosen consistently. I'd be inclined to say that comments including one's own makes a more sensical total for comments.
When the icon is directly on the like button it kinda makes sense it's all likes only. In that case all of the reacts should have individual counters. Otherwise they could be dropped and there could be a total counter only, which perhaps expand to show the individual distribution or something like that.
Like Facebook, as you show above.

@leighms No. I know these people. They're well meaning and will give you the shirt off their back if you need it, but they're not very smart and they're very xenophobic except they somehow turn that off when it comes to people doing construction or milking their cows. Somehow those people are acceptable, but anyone else brown is invading our country :911:

There's not a lot of hope for these people. If they do go to church, they're the kind that's ok with a sexual predator priest being moved to another diocese to hide their crimes. Has happened before, will happen again. So it goes...

Also they suffer from some pretty serious alcoholism. (go look up the maps, one of the worst counties in the USA for alcoholism / binge drinking)

the worst of the crazy people there are pretty well represented by these photos

Amount of hours spent to keep a default #chatmail onboarding relay with 500k active addresses running: near zero.

Glancing at stats sometimes: two million messages per day. CPU and IO load at 20% max. 500gb raid1 ssd meandering around 60 percent full. There is room for various optimizations but no big need currently.

end-to-end encryption with metadata minimization is best if servers are boring. No clustering or enterprise license needed, no "SRE team" either.

I have been working with them already. Bugzilla is here: bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.…

Problem seems to be in the upgrade and that old AT&T account. I keep it since many old accounts still email that address even though I put in a different email. Generally this happens when new apps are created and don't connect to the old databases. Then old databases are used to send emails.

Working with customer service in many of them is hard since so many only use chat bots or non-working AI.
