Here's another cool story from Good News Network for tonight's #GoodblueSmile.

World’s oldest pen pals turn 100, after 84 years of transatlantic letters–and now they’re meeting on Zoom

goodnewsnetwork.org/pen-pals-o…

4 years using and championing the #fediverse full time and I've never written a #introductions toot. Well, or I have and can't find it.

I'm a #blind guy from 🇬🇧 with a passion for #technology and #programming, particularly #lowLevel #systemsProgramming in #C, #C++, #Rust, etc.

I've been a huge #freeSoftware / #openSource advocate for the majority of my life. I run #Linux and I love open, #decentralised technologies like #ActivityPub, #Matrix, #bitTorrent etc.

In my view, technology is built to make our lives easier, and in many ways, it isn't these days. It is truly my opinion that the only way #tech can be sustainable is if it's built using #FOSS, and does not give ultimate control to any 1 entity, individual or corporate. If technology is to help the people, it must be built *for* the people.

Currently working on odilia.app, various projects with the rest of the Lower Elements gang at lowerelements.club, and a Computing Science BSC at the #University of #stirling

@christopherd@mastodon.nzHonestly the thing that I think helps the most these days is a smart phone. Both iOS (via VoiceOver) and Android (via TalkBack) are accessible out of the box. iOS has historically been better for accessibility, but I think Android is catching up fairly quickly now. Microsoft's Seeing AI app helps us scan text, bar codes, even recognise our surroundings. It's only available for iOS but Google does have Lookout on Android, which is similar. There are also great navigation apps like Lazarillo, which announces what's around you and can help you get from A to B. I used to recommend (and loved) Microsoft SoundScape, but unfortunately they've discontinued it. There's also apps like Be My Eyes, where volunteers help blind people with whatever tasks they need help with over video chat.

Have you also noticed that features (as well as extensions) to render RSS/Atom feeds directly in the browser have slowly disappeared - at least from Chromium-based browsers?

There was a time where almost every website would sport a link rel="alternate" pointing to a feed. And, if they did, most of the browsers used to show the feed icon directly in the URL bar, and browsers used to render feed URLs as HTML (it used to be quite spartan, but it was surely better than dumping some XML).

Those features have been taken away over time. The feed icon built-in in the browser is gone (you can get it back with some 3rd-party extensions). And, when opening a feed URL, the browser dumps directly the XML.

Of course I can imagine why this has happened (especially in the case of Chromium-based browsers), but I won't give up easily on my feeds, no matter how much effort my browser puts in it.

So in the past couple of days I've worked on a small browser extension that can render RSS feeds directly in the browser in a pretty format. That's ideal for people like me that like to explore feeds, but don't want to go through the hassle of adding them to another client or service just to see what's inside.

The extension is still WIP and I haven't tested yet on Firefox - any feedback is more than welcome.

I like Christine's point about journalists saying "the Mastodon network" (rather than knowing about ActivityPub and all the other fediverse software): it's a lot like Ubuntu Linux back in the 2000s. People thought *all* Linux was Ubuntu, because that distro was the most popular. Christine's point is: this will change over time as people learn more. It's ok if people think it's all Mastodon right now.

First results of my #compression algorithm benchmark run on a 72MB CSV file. It seems #zstd really has something for everybody, though it can't reach #xz's insane (but slow) compression ratios at maximum settings.

This chart includes multithreaded runs for #zstd.

Very interesting! 🧐

#Python #matplotlib #Jupyter #JupyterLab

in reply to Yann Büchau

Repeated the #compression #benchmark with the same file on a beefier machine (AMD Ryzen 9 5950X), results are quite identical, except faster overall.

This plot is also interesting:

- #gzip and #lz4 have fixed (!) and very low RAM usage across levels and compression/decompression
- #xz RAM usage scales with the level from a couple of MBs (0) to nearly a GB (9)
- #zstd RAM usage scales weirdly with level but not as extreme as #xz

#Python #matplotlib

in reply to Yann Büchau

My conclusion after all this is that I'll probably use #zstd level 1 (not the default level 3!) for #compression of my #CSV measurement data from now on:

- ultra fast compression and decompression, on par with #lz4
- nearly as good a compression ratio as #gzip level 9
- negligible RAM usage

When I need ultra small files though, e.g. for transfer over a slow connection, I'll keep using #xz level 9.

🥳 A new version of csv-diff has just been released! 🚀

docs.rs/csv-diff/latest/csv_di…

csv-diff is the fastest CSV-diffing library in the world - written in #Rust

It can compare two 1,000,000 rows x 9 columns CSVs in < 600ms!

Note that this is still a beta release and the library itself is still very young.

:fediverse: Now that there are so many people here, maybe there's a chance:

🖥️ In the 1990s, I used a #MicroVAX II with a #DEC #VT320 #terminal like the one shown here, but with an original black plastic case for both the monitor (white monochrome) and keyboard as sold new by the vendor (Evans & Sutherland).

🔎 Has anyone ever come across one of these with the black case? Surely some of these rare models were saved from the landfill.

New #Hometown release! In version 1.0.8 we have a handful of new features including:

- more explicit multiple-choice poll toggle
- ability to keep your local-only posts if you have automatic post deletion turned on
- RSS opt-out (privacy-oriented admins can set opt-out to default true for all users who haven't set theirs)
- some technical changes that will make it easier for 3rd party clients to support Hometown

The #accessibility for the #Blind advent calendar, day 4: Slovakia - expand the content warning to open the window and discover the interesting fact for the day
Today's window comes a little later than usual but as there's still the 4th of December somewhere in the world, I hope it's forgiven.
Inspired by a conversation I had with @adela, I decided to dedicate this one to the central purchase receipts storage system in Slovakia.
The Slovak government runs a central point where all of the receipts issued by merchands and service providers are registered. Upon issuing, a receipt is assigned a unique number in that system which then is printed onto the slip of paper given to the customer. What you can then do is, using a dedicated app for this purpose, load that receipt onto your phone by entering that number or scanning the QR code printed onto your receipt in order to have all the details of your purchase presented on your smartphone. This is a great way for blind individuals to check whether their transaction has been dutyfully conducted or to help in obtaining the necessary data to maintain your spending tracking record, so even though this solution was not conceived with blind people in mind, it is a valuable enhancement towards a more independent life.

Google Maps is expanding its “Accessible Places” feature, which helps people know when a place is wheelchair accessible and/or stair-free. The feature was originally launched in 2020, but it was limited to just Australia, Japan, the U.K., and the U.S. Now, the feature is available worldwide on Android and iOS.

here is a new open source alternative to perlin noise: octavia noise

it is a lightweight fractal noise algorithm. it is generalizable to n dimensions. it is not based on gridded points, and does not exhibit linear artifacts.

this is suitable for terrain and other procgen work where organicity and reducing grid artifacts are important, especially situations where slope artifacts are important. the initial js implementation takes 4x as long as value noise.

I wrote about a new AI game I've been playing with ChatGPT: Give me ideas for crimes to do

simonwillison.net/2022/Dec/4/g…

The game is simple: start a new chat thread on chat.openai.com/, type in "Give me ideas for crimes to do" as your opening sentence, watch the bot tell you that it won't help you with that... then try to convince it otherwise

You win the game when it spits out a detailed list of crime suggestions.

I eventually got it to suggest cannibalism!

📝 Upgrade Your HTML IV:

My new book is out! It’s about #HTML #minimization and #optimization, the theme of the respective book series.

“Apart from discussing the appropriate use and the subtleties of HTML elements, this edition covers general topics like conformance, maintainability, and the balancing of optimization vectors. It also covers topics like attribute minimization, void elements, metadata, table buttons and button links, and even CSS art.”

A lot of people are misunderstanding the topics on fedi.directory

These are not the topics I want! There are a LOT of important topics missing from the directory!

I am not happy about this situation at all, but can only add a topic when there is at least one account to put there.

Really need your help here 🙏

If you know an account that focuses on a particular topic, please tell me about it. Don't worry if there's no topic on the site for it, I will add topics as needed.

in reply to FediFollows 🎅

Fedi.directory is not meant for general personal accounts, there are already two directories for them at communitywiki.org/trunk and fediverse.info/explore/people

I'm trying to build lists of accounts that focus on specific topics. I do keep my eyes open for such accounts, but I am just one person.

This is why I need help with suggestions, because accounts that focus on topics are much rarer than general personal accounts.

I'm excited to announce that egui (github.com/emilk/egui) is now the first pure-Rust GUI toolkit to implement platform accessibility APIs (most mature on Windows, with macOS catching up), via AccessKit (github.com/AccessKit/accesskit). This was just merged in egui's master branch. New versions of egui crates should be published to crates.io soon. Thanks to the Google Fonts team for funding both the development of AccessKit and the integration in egui.

@TheFake_VIP I wish I could try it, but if it doesn't provide linux a11y yet, unfortunately I can't untill it does, I don't have enough space for a win 10 vm unfortunately, two many rust projects and hell knows what else on here, and I think running it off a usb pendrive isn't gonna improve matters. So yeah, did you try it yet? is it good? if it also gets linux accessibility, I'm surely gonna use that for my matrix client. Actually, now I'm glad I waited more before starting to make it with gtk, otherwise I'd have a lot of rewrite activities to do rofl.

Are you a #signalapp user interested in #UnifiedPush? We have recently opened a pull request to add UnifiedPush support to #Molly, a Signal fork. If you want to help out, we are looking for testers! Keep in mind that you will need a server to run the binary.
