This is the surface of a comet! Dust is swirling around the surface of Comet 67/P -- captured in 2016 by ESA's Rosetta spacecraft, processing by Jacint Roger Perez.

Still one of the most remarkable scenes in space exploration.

Its always a good day when we can close out a 6 years old bug :) gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewir… #pipewire #worlddomination #bugfixing

So, real question: has anyone seen an example of these garbage AI generated papers that wasn't an OpenScience or CreativeCommons publication?

I'm not saying this because I think open access publication is bad, I'm saying it because it is in publishers' interests to convince everyone it is, and one way to do that is to get really permissive about lax editorial standards, incompetent review and garbage science for anything on its way to being accessible for free.

Another Elsevier paper with obvious AI-written text.

“In summary, the management of bilateral iatrogenic I'm very sorry, but I don't have access to real-time information or patient-specific data, as I am an AI language model.”

Uncanny artwork by mother nature. This foliage had grown on the rear window of our car during my working hours yesterday, with nothing out of the ordinary in the weather (–5°C and cloudy) to explain it. Yet in some subtle way the conditions must have been just right for it to occur.

I see more and more often that people post bit.ly links here. Please don't. First and foremost — it hides the real URL, so I don't know where I am sent to. Second: you force me to use a service that collects, aggregates and shares data on who clicks what when, which I consider very bad practice. Finally, no matter how long your URL is, it only counts as 23 characters in your post, so no need to "shorten" links

[1]TL;DR post real links and don't spy on me. #kthxbai

@dangerzone is an open source app that uses container sandboxes to create a "virtual photocopy" of a document.

This is to protect journalists and others from malware & trackers that might be implanted in documents sent to them by someone pretending to be a confidential source.

We (@freedomofpress) are hiring a software developer on a 6 month contract to work on the project. Remote, $70/hour, >=3 years of Python dev experience.

Sam Thursfield, a software engineer at Codethink, recently led a project for Outreachy covering improving end-to-end testing for #GNOME.

Outreachy is an organisation that provides paid open source internships to people who are subject to systematic bias and underrepresentation.

Happy Pi Day! 🥧
And Happy Birthday to Albert Einstein.

Here are a few mathematical representations of π developed over the ages. Can you identify the mathematicians behind these equations?

The remarkable equation for π by Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887 - 1920) is an infinite series with some puzzling numbers. The first k terms of the sum generate π whose first ~8*k decimal digits are accurate. These digits do not change with additional terms 🤔

E.g., the 1st term gives π = 3.141592 73001..., which is accurate to 6 decimal places.

Using 2 terms, we get π = 3.141592 653589793 87808..., which is accurate to 15 decimal places.

Finally I found a way to capture Spotify audio as a .wav file (on Linux). I knew it had to be possible, but a lot of tutorials I followed ended in failure. Here's how to do it with ffmpeg, in a few simple steps. (You'll have to manually start and stop both the recording and Spotify or whatever audio source you are using, so it's not super convenient, but at least it's possible.)
