Hello people involved in distros and/or CVEs! Is CSAF something you care about? Should projects such as #curl bother about it and perhaps even provide CVE data in this format?
I've asked at work as I remember we have one or two projects consuming CSAF, but tomorrow is a public holiday in our part of Germany and I guess there won't be an answer before next week. 😄

As you might probably know it is often used to communicate full security advisory details in a structured way. And can references several CVEs.... Maybe it's interesting for curl. And since curl is already CNA, why not publishing a CSAF feeds.
At @circl we are maintaining Vulnerability-Lookup and we already monitor several CSAF feeds (Cisco, @bsi, Red Hat, etc). The interesting thing, is that we correlate automatically with the CVE. For example: vulnerability.circl.lu/recent#…
@cedric @circl @bsi the "why not" would be that it is work to put together and maintain and I'm curious what's in it for *us* to provide the data. We already provide data as OSV JSON which from what it appears practically nobody at all cares about.

@cedric @circl @bsi OSV was developed by Google to provide a simple format that all vulnerability databases can use. CSAF is able represent every security advisory and VEX - free and for commercial, closed and open source, software, firmware, hardware, software installed on hardware as well as specifications. This allows the information to flow in a single format through the whole supply chain. CSAF Profiles docs.oasis-open.org/csaf/csaf/… select a minimum set of fields that need to be present. Tests ensure validity, consistency and provide guidance for the usage. PS: CVSS is not mandatory, you can use aggregated_severity or in upcoming CSAF 2.1 qualitative_severity_rating 😉
Great that you are considering #CSAF. We think that CSAF is a gamechanger: CSAF works for open source as well as closed source, hardware, specifications etc. - basically anything you can think of writing a security advisory or #VEX for. Supply Chain Security: No one can secure single handed - everyone is needed. A single format: You can profit from the upstream CSAFs, your downstream users profit from your CSAFs.
However, it's the classic chicken-egg problem: Why should I start? The answer is: #curl is a mature project and can lead the way. We are happy to help you and others getting started. Feel free to reach out to our #CSAF team at csaf@bsi.bund.de.
@bsi we're entirely open source and so is our website and the tools generating the content on the site, so anyone can step forward and contribute a CSAF format generator.
@bsi As a Federal Office it's not easy to do cherry-picking - even for system critical projects like #curl if the tools developed are not agnostic. A OSV-CSAF converter would be possible, but OSV is lacking Information mandatory for CSAF. On a personal note: my last perl-programming was 1998 - therefore I won't make any promises what I might or might not be able to contribute in my spare time or how long it would take.
@jensweidraussen @bsi I understand. I would've expected that if CSAF is such a cool format that it actually improves the lives and the ecosystem of the CVE consumers it would push some of the consumers to make it happen more widely. As a producer of a dozen CVEs per year, there's just no reason for me to put in the work and produce CSAF. It's just not an itch we have.
@bsi TBH: I feel the same way, but IMHO it is like everywhere else in open source: people & #bigtech are using it but rarely contributing to the ecosystem
PSA to #GTK and #GNOME app developers: if your application deals with saving files, it is extra nice to show an in-app notification with an "Open Folder" action button so the user can directly open the containing folder in their file manager afterwards!

I'm very sad inside, because I feel so stuck "Between a rock and a hard place" as Americans say it here. Windows 10 is light, lean, Explorer.exe isn't leaky, but yet, I miss out on two key things: 6 gHZ Wi-Fi and better CPU scheduling for E-cores and P-cores on Intel machines. Windows 11 is bloated, leaky, has newer driver stacks, better support for built-in neural processors if that sorta thing matters, Bluetooth LE Audio on Intel, and Intel's thread director is more tuned for it of course. All of that adds up to an OS upgrade where I don't see the difference in day to day usage at home, where I'm mostly on Ethernet and for my laptops the lack of thread director has not bitten me yet. For GoldWave, 7-zip, or other things that crank out multi-threaded perf, I can always just change process priority to high and I'm good. Linux? Don't even get me started on it, as you may know from my posts around here. I'm still going to experiment with various flavors and distros, but even still, I would be using it to run mostly Windows programs and games, and there's no Mastodon client that has built-in sounds, so that's a deal breaker for me as it is. So, it's a sad day. Until I can figure out which OS is the best and can last years. That answer has nothing to it for me right now, because every single darn OS is like Swiss cheese in some way, once you start using it. Mac OS? VoiceOver gets exhausting and TDSR is your only Terminal reader. So, yes. Super sad, computing is changed.
@mhussain @EdenLinnea ha, that's what I was hoping someone would do on GitHub, but perhaps not enough folks care about losing or missing out. I'm also seeing a lot of move towards Linux, but only time will tell if this leads to any meaningful number changes or if it's just a 1-2% increase. This story would really change if we saw a massive 15-20% spike towards Linux, since then we know there's a lot more development on it too that polish it, but that's the optimistic version of this story.

I am the guest on this week's Penny Forward podcast. I talked about my journey in terms of finding work that aligned with my values as a blind person and attempted to give some general advice for blind people who are looking for work or looking for a job that better aligns with what they would like to be doing. I also talked a little about investing and about moving across the country. To be clear, nothing that I said was intended as a linear "if you do this, then you will find what you're looking for," but, from the point of view of doing what we can as individuals, it is about positioning ourselves to increase our chances of finding opportunities.

This morning a #Mastodon friend called me out on my name-calling of our current President. They said it was hypocritical to do something we tell our kids not to do. I’ve sat with this all day. I actually care about my friend’s opinion, and, hey, I’m not a malignant narcissist. Upon reflection, I must admit that they are absolutely, 100% correct. I am being hypocritical, and at the end of the day it’s really not a good look. But, will this knowledge cause me to stop? Very frankly speaking, I don’t think so. Before you condemn me as a bad person, please allow me to explain where I’m coming from. This presidency has been like none other in my lifetime. I’ve had presidents in the past with whom I disagreed on policy, oftentimes vehemently so. See also Bush, George W. But these were strictly policy disagreements. I never once questioned W’s humanity. But #Trump is something completely different. Almost all of his policies go way beyond abhorrent, but it goes deeper than that. He’s the first president I’ve ever known of who has actively, and deliberately, set out to actually punish those who didn’t vote for him or support him, to hurt them, make them suffer. I actually think that’s a lot of what this #SNAP hostage crisis is all about. He has shown, in countless ways, that he has zero respect for anything or anyone aside from himself. So, in my opinion, he deserves zero respect in return. (1/2)
I'm feeling ... kind of jaded and discouraged. Probably similar to what a lot of people are feeling, though. I was just talking to a friend last night, and he was saying that, when they were younger, a lot of our mutual friends hoped that my generation of blind people would be the ones who would break out and be successful beyond what previous generations have achieved, but, for a lot of the people we know, things haven't worked out for them in the way they might have hoped. I think that a lot of us, myself included, felt that the left had won the argument with the younger generation, particularly after President Obama, but now this doesn't seem to be so, either. I have an old album where the last song is about building a world for women, and I'm not sure if its author is still alive, but, if she is, then I am sure that she also no longer feels the optimism that she might have felt when she was young.
I try to remind myself that we are at a point in time. We have been through dark times in the past. This is not the end of things. Donald Tramp will not be in the Whitehouse forever.
@MikeGorse Sometime in the 80s Arthur Schlesinger Jr. wrote a book called The Cycles Of American History in which he posited that America’s history essentially reset every 30 years. I think, with the coming of tech and the revolution it brought in information availability and attention spans, that cyclical progression has been supercharged. Holy cow, I remember Election Day when #Obama won. It felt like my teams had won the Super Bowl and the World Series on the same day. I’m pretty sure I haven’t been that pumped up before or since. It truly did feel like we had reached a new, great day. And then, splat. It does occur to me that there were probably people who had that very same feeling when #Trump won last November. I can only hope their splat will eventually come. In the meantime, yes, I can related to your jaded and cynical feelings. To a great degree, I share them.
Fun fact: Microsoft purposefully left out Windows 10 from the Wi-Fi 6 gHZ party. As well as Wi-Fi 7. They could have updated the stack, but instead, quietly slipped that change into build 22000 at the time. Just so that if you're on Windows 10, you have another reason to upgrade. You'll never get any 6 gHZ network visibility or connecting on Win10, even if your Wi-fi card and drivers support it. The moment you in-place upgrade to Windows 11? Boom. all works.

Occasionally, a student asks me why being transgender is not considered a mental disorder. I can give you the scientific and diagnostic reasons why not. But I’ll usually answer the following way instead.
Because people who are transgender have shit figured out a hell of a lot better than most other people.
Think about that for a minute. Individuals who are transgender have gone through the long and painful process of self exploration to figure out why they don’t feel right. And after all of that, they came to the conclusion that their biological body is mismatched to who they really are.
Tell me anyone else that has gone through that much introspection that much study that much thought to figure out how they can live in a way that makes them happy. And they recognized that by making the choice that will make them feel happy, they’re gonna have to deal with social stigma, bigotry, and violence every single day.
Compare that to your garden variety bigot who gets angry when he sees a transgender individual, and who lets that person live in his head, ruining his mood and leading him to acts of verbal and possibly physical violence.
Now you tell me which one of those people has a mental disorder

I felt like listening to some Javanese gamelan. Gamelan has 2 tuning systems, sléndro and Pelog. Fun fact, if you can't remember which has 5 notes and which 7, count the letters and you'll know the wrong answer! Gamelan is played by an ensemble of metalophones struck with mallets; some similar to xylophones in setup, others more like pots resting on ropes within a wooden frame, and various gongs; all different sizes and timbres. There are also other instruments, but the gendang, a double-headed drum, is common, as it is an instrument that sets the speed. Hope that helps somewhat.

Дело хорошее. Мне-то нужен был только RSS, о подкастах не думал вроде как. А потом и совсем про идею забыл. Давно было, ещё на Dotnet 4.0, как раз последнее что мне под XP тогда было доступно. Успехов. Главное что мысли есть, а время и желание найдёшь, тебе ж не надо прям срочно к позапрошлому месяцу написать всё.
Хотя, может и не понадобится лезть во всякое. Тыж на WinForms вероятно делать будешь, а там есть какая-то штука для фоновых задач, backgroundWorker что ли. Не помню как оно работает в случае обмена данными, но для простых вещей вроде бы ок должно быть.
@Yinshi Да, пока лучше Winforms ничего не нашёл. Всё остальное, как ни крути, куча жуткого XML и не очень доступный результат. Ну то есть даже доступный, но не то.
XML да, то ещё веселье. В этом плане хорошо что в Спринге например есть возможность конфигурирования разных штук посредством кода, а не только XML. Иначе, это адовый ад, особенно когда видишь конфиг впервые и непонятно что там сломалось.
То есть это перестраивается если очень надо? В yaml с отступами надо быть внимательным, иначе возможны всякие приколы, как у меня было пару раз. Но если выбирать между yaml и properties-файлами например, есть такая херня в java мире, я выберу yaml.
@Yinshi Да, раньше было Yaml, XML и PHP (конфиги в коде), теперь они XML задепрекейтили и в Symfony 8.0 его убирают совсем. Зато вроде как (надеюсь!) добавляют возможность конфигурировать Workflows не только в богомерзком Yaml, но и с помощью PHP. Workflows — это такие штуки, ну типа: у тебя магазин, заказ формируется, сформирован, отправлен, в доставке, доставлен. Или тот же багтрекер со статусами, что из чего куда переходит.
@Yinshi Я не знаю, может, это слепецкая аберрация, но я даже те воркфлоу, которые у них в примерах, читаю с большим трудом. Нет, я могу, конечно, попросить своего друга Клода это написать, но я бы очень хотел иметь возможность читать и понимать то, что выдаёт ИИ. That's very admirable. So many (big) Open Source projects just don't prioritize their "Issues" count/triage process (or think they don't have the resources) and it becomes an outdated and duplication-riddled hell. Looking at you, #Nextcloud.
@b3n I don't think I've written specifically about issues, no. I have awesome contributors in the project and we always consider fixing issues top-prio. But also, to reduce the risk of new issues working on the foundation: readable code, more tests, fuzzing, documentation etc is also crucial.

Have to read through this as I wonder how that's even possible for a lib of that caliber for such a long time. Afaik ABI breaks pretty easily if one just adds more fields to a struct. So you must have planned ahead very well to keep it ABI stable and upgradable, I guess.

already ran into a false positive today, and now had to download a desktop email client just to open an email that Tuta decided is Spam and attached as .eml -- this sucks. As a user, I really really want to be the one to decide which emails are expected and ok and safe to read and which aren't.

Gosh I love podcasting! I started to create the podcast episodes for our local blindness organization. For the second to last episode, I had the main moderation with our press person over MS Teams, which I recorded in Audio Hijack by @RogueAmoeba. I then already had multiple tracks to import into REAPER. Then, I also had the intro and outro, which are two wave files, and a bunch of interviews which were created using several different setups by different people. Two were phone interviews, one was a statement recorded directly onto an iPhone, and two were interviews conducted over Teams or such, with the interviewer and interviewee using notebook mics instead of something proper. But thanks to the advanced audio processing algorithms offered by @auphonic, not only did the press person's audio, which was quite flat when it came to me due to the mic she was using, sound much better because of the voice EQ filter, but the interviews all benefitted from the voice isolation feature, including the removal of reverb. The resulting episode sounds amazing considering the varying bits of audio I was given to put together. The original version of the episode didn't have all of this, but I just recreated the audio with all the above, and hope the person in charge of the podcast host interaction will replace the audio with the one I recreated.
Anyway, the satisfaction of creating something really decent sounding from all these bits of unprofessional recording fills me with lots of joy.
I have the same experience, I record interwievs for our catholic radio and sometimes I cant meet personally. @Auphonic is hilarious. Have You Ever Wanted to Record an Interview or Podcast Online? You’ve probably faced a few challenges: How to transmit audio in the highest possible quality? How to connect in a way that doesn’t burden your guest with installing software? And how to record everything, ideally into separate tracks?
The solution to these problems is offered by the open-source tool VDO Ninja.
What Is VDO Ninja
It’s an open-source web application that uses WebRTC technology. It allows you to create a P2P connection between participants in an audio or video call and gives you control over various transmission parameters. You can decide whether the room will include video, what and when will be recorded, and much more.
In terms of accessibility, the interface is fairly easy to get used to — and all parameters can be adjusted directly in the URL address when joining. All you need is a web browser, either on a computer or smartphone.
Getting Started
The basic principle is similar to using MS Teams, Google Meet, and similar services. All participants join the same room via a link. However, VDO Ninja distinguishes between two main types of participants: Guests and the Director. While the guest has limited control, the director can, for example, change the guest’s input audio device (the change still must be confirmed by the guest).
A Few Words About Browsers
VDO Ninja works in most browsers, but I’ve found Google Chrome to be the most reliable. Firefox, for some reason, doesn’t display all available audio devices, and when recording multiple tracks, it refuses to download several files simultaneously.

Let’s imagine we’re going to record our podcast, for example, Blindrevue. We can connect using a link like this:
Looking at the URL more closely, we can see that it contains some useful instructions:
director – Defines that we are the director of the room, giving us more control. The value after the equals sign is the room name.
novideo – Prevents video from being transmitted from participants. This parameter is optional but useful when recording podcasts to save bandwidth.
proaudio – Disables effects like noise reduction, echo cancellation, automatic gain control, compression, etc., and enables stereo transmission. Be aware that with this setting, you should use headphones, as echo cancellation is disabled, and otherwise, participants will hear themselves.
label=Ondro – Automatically assigns me the nickname “Ondro.”
autostart – Starts streaming immediately after joining, skipping the initial setup dialog.
videomute – Automatically disables the webcam.
showdirector – Displays our own input control panel (useful if we want to record ourselves).
autorecord – Automatically starts recording for each participant as they join.
sm=0 – Ensures that we automatically hear every new participant without manually unmuting them.
beep – Plays a sound and sends system notification when new participants join (requires notification permissions).
We replaced director with room. The value must remain the same, otherwise the guest will end up in a different room.
We left label empty — this makes VDO Ninja ask the guest for a nickname upon joining. Alternatively, you can send personalized links, e.g., label=Peter or label=Marek.
The webcam parameter tells VDO Ninja to immediately stream audio from the guest’s microphone; otherwise, they’d need to click “Start streaming” or “Share screen.”
How to Join
Simply open the link in a browser. In our case, the director automatically streams audio to everyone else. Participants also join by opening their link in a browser. If a nickname was predefined, they’ll only be asked for permission to access their microphone and camera. Otherwise, they’ll also be prompted to enter their name.
Usually, the browser will display a permission warning. Press F6 to focus on it, then Tab through available options and allow access.
Controls
The page contains several useful buttons:
Text chat – Toggles the text chat panel, also allows sending files.
Mute speaker output – Mutes local playback (others can still hear you).
Mute microphone – Mutes your mic.
Mute camera – Turns off your camera (enabled by default in our example).
Share screen / Share website – Allows screen or site sharing.
View and change the guest’s input device — if you change it, a Request button appears, prompting the guest to confirm the change.
Change the output device, useful for switching between speaker and earpiece on mobile devices.
Recording
Our URL parameters define automatic recording for all participants. Recordings are saved in your Downloads folder, and progress can be checked with Ctrl+J.
Each participant’s recording is a separate file. For editing, import them into separate tracks in your DAW and synchronize them manually. VDO Ninja doesn’t support single-track recording, but you can use Reaper or APP2Clap with a virtual audio device.
To simplify synchronization:
Join as director, but remove autorecord.
Wait for everyone to join and check audio.
When ready, press Alt+D to edit the address bar.
Add &autorecord, reload the page, and confirm rejoining.
Recording now starts simultaneously for everyone.
Verify this in your downloads.
Manual Recording
To start recording manually:
Open Room settings menu.
Go to the Room settings heading.
Click Local record – start all.
Check PCM recording (saves WAV uncompressed).
Check Audio only (records sound without video).
Click Start recording.
Important Recording Notes
Always verify that all guest streams are recording.
To end recordings safely, click Hangup for each guest or let them leave.
You can also toggle recording for each guest under More options → Record.
Files are saved as WEBM containers. If your editor doesn’t support it, you can convert them using the official converter.
Reaper can open WEBM files but may have editing issues — I prefer importing the OPUS audio file instead.

Honestly, I wouldn't know what to do without your tools. With LoopBack's and AudioHijack's help, I use my studio microphone as my main microphone on the Mac, for voice messages, recordings etc. And the sound that others get is beautifully levelled and gently compressed by the compressor and limiter from FabFilter so that there's no harsh dynamic range. All thanks to the great integration of plugin parameters Audio Hijack uses, and all accessible with VoiceOver.
