We love the story of 17th century Tulipmania and its financial collapse. How could those people have been so stupid to bet the house on a tulip bulb?

At the end of September, the 8 largest stock holdings in the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) were all AI stocks, amounting to a quarter of the value of the entire pension fund.

So rblind.com didn't go down, and it isn't anymore broken today than it usually is. Cloudflare breaks #accessibility. It always has, and it always will. Now the rest of you know how it feels to be locked out because you don't run JavaScript and can't solve a captcha. Will you stop using #cloudflare? No, of course not! If it blocks #AI, you're completely fine with denying that blind users might be human at all. As AI becomes more and more capable, the definition of "human" is going to become more and more restrictive, until everyone who isn't completely able bodied and doesn't have absolutely perfect vision, hearing, and cognition is completely excluded.

So... @fedora has made a policy explicitly allowing AI code. So I have to change my home distro.

@gentoo and @netbsd both have specific policies against it, but I ain't about doing a Gentoo install (sorry, guys, I love you for this, but I need a binary first distro), and NetBSD ain't great for gaming AFAIK.

So... any other Distros wanna step up and do the right thing? @archlinux? @opensuse? @debian? #VoidLinux? @alpinelinux?

Just a public statement that says "No, we don't want that crap" would be plenty --- I understand the difficulty of enforcing the policy, but setting it as a community/commit standard would go a long way towards making a lot of us feel better.

(Boost for visibility, please?)

Unfollowed Audiobook Café by Accessible Media Inc. because they promoted AI narration for audiobooks. The host just interviewed an independent author that released a full cast audiobook using 11 labs. I couldn’t even make it past the introduction. The host kept making a claim that it cost money to produce audiobooks and human narrators are not cheap, so independent authors can’t afford human their Raiders, so this is the only way to go about it. I can’t express my other discussed. Frankly, if I can achieve human narrators, there is no excuse. It really isn’t that hard. The host justification was that, well, it’s not cheap to hire human audiobook narrators. I’m not going to promote the episode, you can go look for it, but every time I see blind or visually impaired people promote AI audiobooks, I just have to ask, why do you still listen to human narrated audiobooks because clearly you don’t want human narrated audiobooks any more? I legitimately do not understand. #AI #Audiobooks #Audiobook

Hotmail —> Yahoo —> Gmail —> ?????

Gmail has been my main email since like 2008. Clearly it’s time for that to change. Anyone have any email recommendations for this next life stage of the internet, something not poisoned by fascism, data theft, and AI? 🧐

I’ve been testing a theory: many people who are high on #AI and #LLMs are just new to automation and don’t realize you can automate processes with simple programming, if/then conditions, and API calls with zero AI involved.

So far it’s been working!

Whenever I’ve been asked to make an AI flow or find a way to implement AI in our work with a client, I’ve returned back with an automation flow that uses 0 AI.

Things like “when a new document is added here, add a link to it in this spreadsheet and then create a task in our project management software assigned to X with label Y”.

And the people who were frothing at the mouth at how I must change my mind on AI have (so far) all responded with resounding enthusiasm and excitement.

They think it’s the same thing. They just don’t understand how much automation is possible without any generative tools.

This is TERRIBLE! Mozilla people who used to follow me here... Talk some sense into your coworkers/management!

People don't use Firefox because it's loaded with crap and AI, they use it because it's not corporate owned and not feeding all your browsing data into the data machine. AI is not of any benefit to add to your browser, no matter the hype.

Mozilla announces more AI in Firefox, still failing to understand that at this point their market share is made of tech savvy people who do not want that.

Mozilla, please. Stop chasing the fads. Get your own values.

People use Firefox to get access to an open web, use a sturdy browser, and not to be tracked. Build in that direction and that direction only.

Nobody from your current user base will recommend Firefox with AI to their friends.

I am on an academic committee that for some reason tomorrow is discussing the ChatGPT Atlas Browser: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChatGPT_…

Several objections will be raised!

Some of my concerns are to do with critical reasoning, natural resources, user lock-in, the extraction of training data.... but I would appreciate hearing your thoughts about other themes I might bring up. Thanks in advance.

I usually use either #ChatGPT (for everyday tasks) or #Claude (for coding), but I found #GitHub #Copilot extremely useful when a CI job fails. There is a button that opens a menu, and one of the items is "Explain the error". It spawns a chat with a premade prompt, so no need to frentically sift through logs, first finding the failing job with a screen reader, then trying to find the error in question. It can be done of course, but afterwards, if Copilot's explanations are not good enough. #AI #AITip #Accessibility

Testing #ClaudeCode for web. It's all great and good, but it would be nice if there were a setting not to spawn Git branches per session. I want Claude to co-work with me on a branch I've already created, so now I need to first make a PR to that branch, then merge to Master. #Claude #AI

As an art teacher I was worried AI would come up as an issue of "why should I learn how to draw when I can use AI instead."

But the real issue is that my middle schoolers CONSTANTLY believe all art I show them is AI. Digital art. Photography. Oil paintings from the Western canon. "A human couldn't do that"

Being convinced that humans can't make great art is kind of terrifying

🚨 AI is a billion dollar bet. And Big Tech wants YOU to pay for it. Now Microsoft got sued for tricking users to pay 45% more for its AI. 🚨

My work #EMR at now has integrated #AI that summarizes a patient's chart whether I want it to or not. This week it told me the wrong reason for admission, the wrong hospital course, and the wrong medications as compared against the human-written discharge summary. To review it and find the error took 3 minutes; to document the error and report it took another 10.

Anchoring bias exists. What we read stays with us, truth or lie, influencing decisions.

And I can't turn it off.

#AI using tip: consider going to memory settings (#ChatGPT memory, #Claude now has it also) and removing garbage.
I use free tier of ChatGPT, and it complains about full memory. I went there and now I'm removing lots of insignificant facts taken from random one-time chats.

I honestly think that AI does accelerate writing work but not in the way you think. Because it eases cognitive burden, it allows writers to create without burning out. Writers like me, anyway, whose day job involves writing cognitively demanding copy about high technical concepts 😅.

In the past, my work to so much of cognitive and creative energy out of me that there's often nothing left for my personal creative work. So I often have to sacrifice my personal writing. But due to the ability of AI to now help me with things that drain me, I can focus things that matter to me.

I like writing so yeah AI is never gonna take that away from me. (That's part of the reason why I don't pay for AI services because I don't really rely on it to generate much text.

(Writers often subscribe to models if they want to generate a lot of text as the free versions do not generate a large amount of text.) The open source Deep Seek is enough for me, because I use it mostly for planning and detail oriented work like editing. I also realize that I like to dictate my writing and I often use AI to help me organize my thoughts. And then I fix it by rewriting it. This has accelerated my blogging and writing.

Oddly I can't do it with fiction 😆. I usually use story beats to flesh out my chapter, and then use AI as a sophisticated swipe file to start my writing. And yes, I still write my fiction with my own fingers!

With that cognitive savings I gained from using AI, I could now write fiction, or my newsletters and #Cdrama reviews without feeling like I am draining my brain dry or burn out every month.

So I think AI doesn't exactly accelerate my work. It enables me to produce more because I no longer am exhausted as quickly or as often.

For me it's even worse, because i not only got that in the 90's, i also grew up in the 70's during the oil crisis. Speed limits were lowered to 55 mph to save gas, fuel efficiency standards were first introduced, President Jimmy Carter had solar panels installed on the White House roof and addressed the nation on TV about saving energy while wearing a sweater so the White House thermostat could be set lower in the winter, and all the schools had stickers on the light switches reminding you to turn the lights off when leaving a classroom empty. Energy conservation was huge when i was growing up. Now it's "go ahead and use enough electricity to power a house for a month so you can make a video of a three eyed cat playing a banjo"

I just published a new piece: “Why Can’t Everything Be Accessible?”
Accessibility isn’t complicated—it’s ignored. We’ve failed to teach, enforce, and value inclusion in tech.
Developers, educators, governments, and companies all have a role to play.
Read and share if you believe accessibility should be for everyone:

If someone keeps saying #AI is just "fancy autocomplete", they A) don't understand a thing about LLM's; and B) they have never brainstormed a naming idea with #ChatGPT.

Here’s an interesting tech tip, that literally just came to me this morning as I was playing with Gemini. how to add the current date to your chat, to help keep things organized.
Prompt the model to automatically add the current date to the top of every new chat session. This small tweak makes referencing past discussions much more efficient. No complex settings are needed, just a straightforward instruction. As an example, I told Gemini to remember to put the date as the first line in every chat. Now, when I prompt it for something, it will automatically place today’s date in the very first line, allowing me to truly keep track of when I last updated a chat. Any subsequent prompts in the conversation, are not prefix with today’s date. Only the very first line. even better, you only have to tell it to remember one time. I’m sure you could do this with ChatGPT as well. #AI, #Gemini
