x.x.x.x - - [10/Nov/2024:00:02:37 +0000] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 301 162 "-" "okhttp/4.9.0"

You know what’s interesting about this log line? It repeats 56,686,963 times in www.kernel.org logs for yesterday, across 4 nodes. That’s about 700 times a second, and this has been going on for months.

These requests aren’t intentionally malicious – they issue a simple GET /, receive their 301 redirect, and terminate the connection. From what I can tell, this is some kind of appliance or software installed on mobile clients that uses “can I reach www.kernel.org” as a network test.

This wouldn’t be that big of a deal – a single plaintext “GET /“ that triggers an immediate 301 is very cheap for us to generate, but the number of these requests has been steadily growing.

If you have any idea what this is and how to make it stop, please reach out?

"I’m a neurology ICU nurse. The creep of AI in our hospitals terrifies me"

This interview confirms all the things I have been going on about for the last year.

"I don’t think the goal is really to provide a safety net for everyone — I think it’s actually to speed us up, so we can see more patients, reduce visits down from 15 minutes to 12 minutes to 10. Efficiency, again."

I wrote my own essay on #AI in healthcare a few weeks ago which aligns very well with the interviewed nurse's position:

Hey Banking smartphone developers, account numbers might sound better with screen readers if you put spaces between all digits, but all screen reader technology has features that deals with that sort of thing. Puttings spaces on account numbers just makes it that much more tedious for braille users. Stop over-thinking text-to-speech.

@KaraLG84 @simon Oh wow! That's, hmm, interesting. I always wonder how many hours of meetings these sort of things have. Unfortunately, in my work, this usually comes to me after the fact and I have to tell them that they've wasted their time. I guess that's what happens if they don't actually ahve a screen reader tester on their team.
in reply to Martin from Toronto

@KaraLG84 @simon We had the whole 'you can't just time things' discussion for the umpteenth time today.
"People use different speech speeds, you know."
"They do? So I can't use my emulator as a catch all? to know when an error has finished reading?"
"nope. Sorry. Different levels of punctuation, too. Different voices. Voices from different suppliers."
"Ah, that makes things harder."
And then I said, "And you know you can install a variety of third party screen readers on Android, right?"

* Silence. *

Personally, my view is that they send us the text and we choose how we deal with it.

Sharky is sharing his favorite keyboard shortcuts! Did you know? The keyboard shortcut INSERT+SPACE, then F1 opens FSCompanion, the new AI tool in JAWS! What is your favorite Sharkvember Shortcut? freedomscientific.com/sharkvem…

#Sharkvember #JAWS #KeyboardShortcuts

in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield I love this shortcut! So glad you mentioned it. I use it pretty frequently! It's a little bit of finger gymnastics to do it, but I'm happy it's available.
in reply to Chris Cooke

@CreativeChris Yep, being able to append to the clipboard is incredibly convenient. You can also avoid the finger gymnastics by either reassigning the shortcut key or by just adding it to another key using the JAWS Keyboard Manager.
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield Oh, that's brilliant! I never thought of reassigning the keyboard command to this. Awesome!
in reply to Michael Babcock

Also, you can append text to the clipboard with NVDA, using the same hotkey that JAWS uses for this function, if you install the Clip Contents Designer add-on from the add-on store via the NVDA menu. The add-on also lets you clear the contents of the clipboard as well as being able to view the contents of the clipboard. Hotkeys for this add-on can be reassigned or added to other keys by using NVDA's Input Gestures dialog, as it has a category for the Clip Contents Designer add-on once that add-on is installed.
Any NVDA user who needs to do a lot of clipboard management shouldn't be without this add-on. #NVDA

@payown @CreativeChris I should also mention that, if you want that newly modified keystroke to be available globally, don't forget to choose the default configuration from within Keyboard Manager by pressing shift+ctrl+D. You guys likely already know that but it's worth mentioning for those who are new to Keyboard Manager.
Also, as an odd keyboard shortcut, insert+8 (on the row of numbers) can be used to open Keyboard Manager; that one's been in JAWS for ages. It's a bit faster than the other ways of opening Keyboard Manager but it's not as intuitive. I still use it as it's one of the first ways I learned to open Keyboard Manager.

So, a collegue of mine spent 90 days cycling through the USA, from East to West. He tells Americans hate cyclists (all Dutch folks/for that matter) because they consider them to be 'left'. They even seem to have a tailpipe soot button to annoy them if they don't have an Americans flag on display somewhere on the bike.

My honest, main motivation for switching from the basic Gmail client on Android to @thunderbird Mobile is that my city councillor and local library both send really long emails that gmail cuts off and then I have to open it in another window and then if I tab away from that window it resets to the top of the email. I know that Google will never solve this annoyance because they do not care. So this is my plug for Thunderbird on Android: it doesn't cut off your long emails.

No matter what the reason is, we're always happy when someone makes the switch to Thunderbird! Thanks for sharing your story and tagging us! 💙

Hey @fdroid Just now I was writing a fairly long e-mail in @thunderbird when it updated and stopped abruptly. I lost the contents of my e-mail, it wasn't even in the drafts folder.

I would much prefer not to be interrupted with an update while working in an app, but if that can't be avoided then have the app shut down gracefully so it saves work in progress.

Is this a known issue? Should I file a bug report? A feature enhancement request?

Thx for all the other great work, tho!

Thanks for tagging us in this - it's good to know in case we have people reporting this issue on our end!

@RaccoonForFriendica new version 0.1.0-beta21 available for testing!

Changelog:
🦝 add option to load media only when connected over a WiFi network;
🦝 add option to open web pages in internal viewer;
🦝 default visibility for replies and warning if higher visibility than original post;
🦝 prevent changing visibility in post edits;
🦝 make plain text mode the default choice for composition;
🦝 remove "other" section in login;
🦝 improved video player;
🦝 render custom emojis inside poll options;
🦝 layout fixes: chat title, user items in inbox, loading indicators in buttons;
🦝 fix occasional crash in profile screen;
🦝 add more unit tests;
🦝 several dependency updates.

If things go well, this may be the final round of tests before the first stable release. The last bit will probably be making crash reports opt-out by default.

I'm also very pleased to inform you that the app has been accepted by IzzyOnDroid, so installing it is a lot easier if you use it or have its source added to your FDroid app.

In the meantime #livefasteattrash!

in reply to ❄️ freezr ❄️

Apprezzerei se potessi tenerla fissa! 🙏

Grazie! 🙏

in reply to ❄️ freezr ❄️

ps. Termine tecnico "pallozzo".

in reply to 𝔻𝕚𝕖𝕘𝕠 🦝🧑🏻‍💻🍕

@𝔇𝔦𝔢𝔤𝔬 🦝🧑🏻‍💻🍕

Grazie! 🙏

Hey folks! I'm getting back into Thunderbird as my main email app on Windows and I'm on the hunt for some great add-ons.

I'm especially interested in **accessibility-focused add-ons** that play nice with NVDA and JAWS screen readers. But I'm also curious about any **cool add-ons** that make Thunderbird even better, even if they're not specifically for accessibility.

Got any recommendations? Share them here!
