New features and improvements coming to #LibreOffice 24.8, our next major release, due in August! 😊 For Writer (our word processor), Calc (spreadsheet), Impress (presentations) and Draw (diagrams and layout). More details at wiki.documentfoundation.org/Re… #foss #opensource #news

LibreOffice reshared this.

in reply to LibreOffice

Unpopular / controversial opinion:
Everybody and their dog is integrating AI features into their software. Are there some ideas for LO in that direction? Like connecting to AIs running locally or on other computers?

Some meaningful features (IMHO):
- Summarizing documents.
- Rewriting marked text (e.g. in easy language).
- Finding mistakes and suggesting corrections.
- Help assistant: How do I ... ; In column C, I want to ...
- Unobtrusive help suggestions (Clippy, but in good.)

in reply to LibreOffice

Thank you for the info. The extension looks interesting, bit I want to keep my data on my local machines and not feed them to OpenAI (or any other cloud AI provider). Perhaps an interface can be made with different implementation for different AIs.
in reply to LibreOffice

Please keep this an optional extra.

By default no data should be taken elsewhere. Not even "summary usage" data.

That will be an advantage for LO.

Here's a very calm, well researched video analyzing the facts and data about AI technology progress. And all the stunning tech demos that were faked.

I really like the scientific approach to this and I feel like I'd want to adapt this kind of analytical process to other things in my life.

Similarly the #pinephonepro, which has a proper ISP.

These devices are really on the low-end performance wise - so if things run okay-ish here we should be good with all more powerful devices coming up.

Vzhlížející k samotnému André Bretonovi či k Man Rayovi. popsat jednou větou její fotografie je obtížné a do dnes si mnoho lidí nad nimi klade mnoho otázek. 🧵1/4

Not sure if I've talked about this here, but there are like, tons of stuff here. I'm gonna try that Linux distro through Crostini on my old ChromeBook that I don't do anything else with anymore. A lot of people are talking about alternatives to the Ladybird browser/browser-engine. I have a list in my site’s compatibility statement.

  • Servo (Rust, some C++) and WeasyPrint (Python, some deps with other bindings) are probably the most capable alternative actively-developed engines.
  • Dillo (C++) and Hastur (C++, requires Bazel) seem promising.
  • If you have a VR headset, be sure to try Igalia’s Wolvic (Java).
  • While NetSurf (C) works very well, development on its web engine seems to have slowed down a lot.

I’ve tried all except Hastur and Wolvic.

is the browser engine responsible for accessibility as well? I thought it just renders, while accessibility is a separate process, which gets the DOM in some form of an IPC message. Isn't that how it was in firefox before cache the world? that's what I remember. Also, technically there's now a rust library for accessibility, called accesskit, with which you can just implement afew traits for the objects which are supposed to represent rendered objects, and with some initialization code to link the stuff, you get accessibility just like that. So yeah, technically accessibility could easily enough be added
in reply to the esoteric programmer

@esoteric_programmer Sort of. Browsers are responsible for building an accessibility tree from the DOM, and varying support for browser features like ARIA shows. Like you said, this gets complicated as assistive technology does usually hook deeper into the browser. the line between the browser and the assistive technology gets blurry.

Yelp says it is dramatically increasing information about accessibility in listings on its site for restaurants and other locations, while also pushing businesses to become more inclusive.
