Someone made gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/librsvg… and it's the kind of patch that is hard to evaluate.

It's to allow restricting rsvg-convert to outputting certain PDF versions. Cairo's default is PDF 1.7, but that causes a warning when embedding such PDFs in #TeXLaTeX.

There are two cases of the relevant warning in texlive (github.com/search?q=repo%3ATeX…) - and as far as I can tell, both are ancient.

So, I'm torn between "having --pdf1.5 is gross in terms of usability" and "this lets people solve a problem".

@joncruz Heh, I mean, the meat of the patch is a single line of code, that tells Cairo which PDF version to emit. I'd rather do that than send people on a side quest to find how to convert PDF versions. A tiny bit of maintenance load for me, vs. hours wasted for everyone.

(I'd really prefer it if LaTeX would update their defaults (does it really default to emitting PDF 1.4 or something?), but I understand the reasons for its glacial development pace at the core.)

Super excited to announce that you can now use WhatsApp for web without using a QRCode to sign in! Simply select "link with phone number" from web.whatsapp.com and enter your number. You will then see an 8-digit alphanumeric code. Enter this code on the phone under linked devices > add a device > link with phone number and WhatsApp will do the rest!

Video Game Preservation

A new study shows a whopping 87% of games released prior to 2010 are no longer available for sale or download by any means other than the second-hand market and archival/"piracy": gamehistory.org/87percent/

Proof if you ever needed it that the community is doing the work that corporate interests won't do to preserve gaming history and the slice of culture it represents.

We are living in an age when it is so astonishingly cheap to keep copies of things around and yet the perverse incentives exist for companies to memory-hole anything that doesn't perform well or that might compete with newer offerings.

IMO, in the big picture this is what legislation is for, correcting a horrible tendency that the market will have if left to its own devices, and there should absolutely be legislation protecting archivists of content that's no longer available for sale, or even requiring that content creation companies keep content available in SOME form. Until then, we depend on each other to do this.

@Sibshops Every video I try cannot be played. With #Fedilab for example it works, in #Tusky not. So, it shouldn't be the phone, except Fedilab comes with codecs exclusively for the app, but I doubt it is so. So what else could be the reason? Thanks

Edit: And no, I can't see this video. After pressing the play button it seems it's loading, then comes a black screen with the message "cannot play this video" (screenshot shows the german message) and that's it. Always the same.

@Sibshops I found something similar. At least the same error message, but I don't know what is meant by "the parent video".

This from 2022 seems similar and several people had problems playing videos:

If I read the mentioned solution right, it could be the instance?

Ok, I said I would do it, and here it is.

I want #Fipamo and #TheBadSpace to be viable mainstays in the fediverse ecosystem, and to get them where they need to be, I need some help to get them up to snuff.

Because I believe the fedi can be a fantastic place. And I want to make a direct contribution to making this space better.

Spread this around. It's time to get to work.

As of this morning, the fund has hit $1853/40k.

I will be very honest, and I am surprised and humbled that the campaign to get resources for #Fipamo and #TheBadSpace has started this strongly.

I'm feeling many emotions right now because of this, but it makes me feel like many more people than I thought to believe the fedi can be a transformative place.

It's only been one day, but I feel like we can do this and set an entirely new precedent for what we can accomplish if we pull together.

Thanks, y'all, and let's keep it going.

OpenAI threatening to leave the EU if they pass legislation requiring them to list their data sources because:
"In addition to the possible business threat, forcing OpenAI to identify its use of copyrighted data would expose the company to potential lawsuits. Generative AI systems like ChatGPT and DALL-E are trained using large amounts of data scraped from the web, much of it copyright protected. When companies disclose these data sources it leaves them open to legal challenges."

Like every other boom tech company, it's just doing labor crimes and theft and claiming you're actually too innovative to be regulated, God.

@kranzkrone What I still don't get is: they openly admit they violate laws, and are still allowed to operate? They basically say their entire product is based on stolen stuff, and there's no court shutting them down?

So as usual: if you're big enough, you can ignore the law unless it concerns another "big fish". So it's fine to say "all stolen" as long as you don't have to disclose where from.

Yuck. Vulture Capitalism 🤮

Right. I've decided that although American train-horns are amazingly jazzy with their sick chords, they're also angry. They just say 'Haaaaa! Aam here, ya better hear me!'
UK trains with their two-tone horns are like a happy woman. A posh British woman of course, but they say 'Hello! Heh Low!'Or perhaps 'Hi there!'
It's a thing.

I found this file in a folder simply called 'Google'. It must have come off of my 3GS, and I'm guessing is from the Google search app. This file played when you asked the app to perform a search. Forgot I had this. Also have all the other sounds from the app at the time. Guessing I jail-broke the phone to grab these.
