I was using Debian earlier today--the GUI, not over SSH. I think I see why Linux isn't more popular. I had a .txt file, and I pressed enter on it. Any computer user would expect the file to open. At worst, they would expect to be prompted to choose an application. Nope. Debian popped up a dialog saying the file was executable, and asking if I wanted to run it. Come on, Linux. It's a text file! What are you doing? This is (part of) why nobody likes you.
Friendly reminder that Signal—while maybe not perfect—is a much better choice for communication than RCS, especially if you are communicating anything sensitive. Doubly true if you are on iOS or communicating with anyone who is, as Apple still does not even use end-to-end encryption for RCS like Google does on Android.

I'm very relaxed. Giving feedback isn't crying mr.mellowdramatic it's feedback & you don't like it okay cool. Now that I think about it, my Bosch induction cooktop had some open source licenses listed in the accompanying documentation. It doesn't have any sort of connectiovity.
It's a few years old, so I guess I got lucky. My (Bosch) oven has WiFi and Bluetooth symbols visible on the display if you look at the right angle, but no connectivity either.

umm, yes. Yes indeed. I mean I use gemini and ask "lay out the process you will follow", which it does. The process is astoundingly long. I say do it. It takes twenty seconds to do it. By no means does it do it perfectly, but most often, it does actually work, and there's allot of writing done.

What's up with FastSM using YTDLP but saying Youtube links have "no audio" when hitting CTRL+enter? Seems weird that the player can't play its own links. Probably me missing something obvious.
@Bri Hmm. It detects the links as playable, but still says unsupported file format. Definitely progress in the right direction though I think. I just wish I knew why it was claming that the format was unsupported.

Is there a magic tap command option on braille displays for starting/stopping dictation etc? Using a Focus 14 and checked the commands list but nothing close to it seems to be an option
Hi @Tamasg I'm trying NVSpeechPlayer 2026 v10, I'm not sure if this is the latest version, but the voice sounds a bit different, even when using Adam, than the original SpeechPlayer. Were there some changes that could change how the overall voice quality sounds? It's hard to pinpoint it, but the voice itself sounds less harsh and consonents like P sound very short now. I see several settings in the voice dialog but I have no idea what any of them do, but they did not seem to make much of a difference. lol that's not a setting, we moved the experimental sound into the main branch because most people prefered it for the smoothness. if you really liked the sawtooth wave used by the original version just swap speechplayer.dll from v7 at eurpod.com/synths/nvSpeechPlay… - it's openable as a zip, swap speechplayer.dll from that one into yours and it'll sound like the old voice.
Will this get rid of the weird fading in on some phonemes too? Or will I have to use the phoneme editor? I do want to try to fix some stuff with US English in general, so I'm planning to look at that too.
hm it should, definitely test if it's the player or the pack and see. I definitely don't notice phoneme fading here but maybe I don't read the same stuff.
Even with that change, I still hear it on US English. For instance, reading your latest reply here, I can hear it on words like "same," "fading," and other words with A in them.
yeah, there were like 3 missing phoneme fields: preFormantGain. , GlottalOpenQuotient, ETC. these got added in the later pack and are now tunable per vowel, in the past they would just be set to the engine default and everything got the same treatment. So this allows more flexibility but some things could have shifted with the change. Every letter now needs to define these new 3, they are very important for shaping and leaving them out in the past until now has been a disaster.
so The global eɪ tie caused issues with US sounds like “same” since it applied across regions. We’ve now limited the tie to only eɪ followed by schwa (eɪə), which should revert the US behavior back and remove the fade. Thankfully it should be a rule change only not a phoneme change. Thanks for spotting it.
Awesome, I'll take a look. I also notice weird inconsistencies with phonemes in general with US English, not just in speech player, but in eSpeak in general. Are we stuck with eSpeak's limitations? Or can I make other changes in the phoneme editor? For instance, certain words with "ong" in them sound more like "onng" instead (with Eloquence, "onng" will produce more of an "ah" sound instead. It's like eSpeak has specific exceptions where "ong" sounds correct. Can I overwrite this for speech player? Or are we stuck with this weird inconsistency?
This is a really good observation, and you’re not imagining it. What you’re hearing isn’t specific to SpeechPlayer, it comes from how eSpeak phonemizes certain vowel + nasal combinations in English, especially around “ng”. Depending on the word, eSpeak may output slightly different vowels before /ŋ/, and that can make some “ong” words sound more like “onng” or overly nasal. Eloquence handled this differently: it didn’t rely on a generic phonemizer, but used hand-tuned rules that deliberately adjusted vowel quality before nasals. That’s why those cases often sound more natural there. The good news is that we’re not stuck with eSpeak’s output as-is. For SpeechPlayer, we can override or normalize specific IPA patterns in the language pack (for example, adjusting vowel quality before /ŋ/ or mapping those cases to dedicated internal vowel variants). We’ve already done similar overrides for other tricky cases like “fear/hear” and UK vs US differences. So while eSpeak itself has limitations, SpeechPlayer isn’t limited to reproducing them exactly — it just means the fixes live in the language/phoneme rules rather than in the core engine. You can check out our other normalization rules to get an idea for this.
If you have specific “ong” words that sound off to you, those examples are actually very helpful, because they tell us exactly which patterns to target.
ahaha darn it. Now I hear it too. On words like "beyond" - yeah, it might be really an ESpeak thing. We're not limited to it as our phonemizer, actively exploring others, but bundling any other one could drastically increase the size of SpeechPlayer as the add-on. Right now we kind of highjack Espeak from within NVDA itself, and that gives us a neat little advantage but does lock us in.
Oh and we can't forget about the "hazz bean" bug that's in some earlier NVDA and eSpeak versions... I'm still on NVDA 2024 and I heard that with Speech Player and eSpeak. I need to see if it's fixed in 2025.3, I think it might be. I'll keep using it, but also the O phoneme in words like "box" sounds like it's way overdone. Book still sounds like it's in UK english too. Support has a wrong "or" sound, this one's again on eSpeak, eSpeak keeps breaking US english and making it way worse. This used to be handled correctly, but I think they broke it in 2024 and it still sounds like that today.
but now I really will take a break from it at least for today, no more coding. I'm glad the pops/clicks are fixed, that really was the big win for the day, and to know the issue wasn't engine side, took so darn long to debug that. Oof. Tired. Hot tub time.

Ich habe mehrere Jahre Dualboot genutzt. Seit Windows 10 würde ich persönlich das nur noch versierten Benutzern empfehlen. Windows ist da eine ziemliche Schweinebacke und hat da keine Skrupel, dir z.B. nach einem Update mal kurz den Bootloader zu zerschiessen. Nicht lustig, für die " Nur-Anwender:in".
Daher, wenn möglich, Linux nach erfolgreichem Live-Test ab USB Stick beim Installieren die ganze Festplatte geben. Und falls doch noch zwingend ein Windows benötigt wird, dieses per Virtual Box o.ä. nutzen.
Das "sieht" man aber nicht vorher oder nur beim ausprobieren. Das läuft wunderbar nebeneinander, bis zu dem Punkt, wo Windows findet, es wäre mal an der Zeit, zu zeigen, wer der Donald auf der Kiste ist. Und dann tuts weh. Darum empfehle ich das für Umsteiger gar nicht mehr.
Nach meiner Erinnerung und Erfahrung musste man vor dem Einrichten des DualBoot in Windows diesen *Pseudo-Shutdown* ausschalten. Ansonsten lief das wunderbar, bis man einmal wieder Windows startete und herunterfuhr. Da es in der Standardeinstellung nicht wirklich heruntergefahren wird, kommt das System dann nicht an Grub dran....
Das ist genau das, was ich meine. Wir können mit sowas umgehen. Aber in meinem Umfeld (Computeria), die "typische" Ü60/Ü70 Nutzer:in, welche die Schnauze voll hat, von einer Firma, die sie zwingt einen guten Rechner gegen einen neuen zu tauschen... Der hätte ich früher ohne mit der Wimper zu zucken einen Dualboot empfohlen. Das kannst du denen heute nicht mehr zumuten.
Mich haben vor ca. 12, 13 Jahren auch die Verdrehungen immer wieder frustriert. Da haben Leute drauflos auf Linux umstellen wollen, weil sie das bei mir gut laufen sahen oder ich es empfohlen hatte. Sie haben sich aber vorher nicht mit den Grundlagen vertraut gemacht und meinten dann na Dein Linux funktioniert ja nicht, es bootet nicht mehr - dabei lag es halt an Windows. Und da gibts einiges in dieser Richtung...
Die Dualbootprobleme, die wir hier kurz ansprachen, kommen i.d.R. von Windows und betreffen dann wohl die meisten gängigen Linuxdistributionen. Die meisten davon arbeiten mit dem sog. Bootloader GRUB. Siehe z.B. wiki.ubuntuusers.de/GRUB_2/
@fexplorer Ich kenne aktuell (vernünftigen) keinen Drucker, der von Linux nicht erkannt und vollumfänglich unterstützt wird. Na ja, Exoten gibt es leider auch.
Nach meiner Erfahrung kann es trotzdem frickelig werden...und die automatische Treiberinstallation hat manchmal in die Sackgasse geführt. Deshalb empfehle ich vor dem Anschluß eines Druckers, sich zu informieren.
Bei Druckern scheint sich die Situation gebessert zu haben.
Aber es kann schnell unerfreulich werden, wenn man z.B. eine etwas anspruchsvollere Maus benutzen möchte, Kameras benötigt, Video- und Audioequipment oder Steuerpulte.

Geht, aber so etwas wie die Adobe Suite gibt's meines Wissens nicht für Linux. Dafür tolle einzelne Programme. Die Experten streiten sich über Qualität und Professionalität....

NVSpeech Player 2026 v10: Removes all pops/clicks from stream, 100% for sure now. Spanish can now say "yo" properly. First attempt at "hear" and "dear" but it's not perfect yet. @clv1 You’re right, the schwa rule was present, but it didn’t trigger before "rã" in pt-br because we normalize ã into a Brazil-specific nasal vowel symbol Ã, and our PT_VOWELS class didn’t include Ã. I’ve added à to PT_VOWELS (and PT_NASAL_VOWELS) in pt.yaml, so consonant + ɾ + à now correctly becomes consonant + ᵊɾ + Ã. That should fix the missing schwa before rã / ram / ran-style sequences.

Has anyone tried using BlindRSS with Bazqux Reader? After going into Settings/Providers, I chose Bazqux Reader, entered correct credentials, activated the OK button but I still am not getting articles. Is it the app or am I missing a step?
The floppy icon for save isn't going away because people don't recognize floppies. It is going away because fewer and fewer apps allow you control over when and what to save.
And that's a good thing. The concept of "saving" (as well as the OK button) only exist as historical artifacts. Nobody ever wanted them, but in the age of slow CPUs, slow HDDs, slow floppies, and single-threaded everything, there was no choice but to have them.

I'm looking for a secure Messaging app replacement for #GrapheneOS but my web searches haven't turned up any clear answers. I use Signal and love it - I'm just looking for something for SMS/MMS that isn't as unsightly as the default Messaging app, with better use of the available screen real estate, and perhaps has some basic theme and/or layout options. Any recommendations from personal experience?
I think people will get confused by the way you formulated the post "secure messaging app" that is why you will get recommendations for Delta Chat and other encrypted messengers, maybe better clarify you mean "secure SMS app" to avoid confusion, and btw I recommend you to give a try to #DeltaChat as replacement for Signal, no phone number or any data required, decentralized, good multi-device, etc.
Don't mind me, I'll just be over here mumbling to myself that I warned you all that e-mail was not designed to be, and therefore was never intended to be, an instant messaging service. So don't come to me when e-mails are delayed an unusual amount of time.
actually, #email (#SMTP + #IMAP) can totally be used for #InstantMessaging it is not the protocols it is the specific email providers and "big fishes" like #gmail and #Outlook the ones that put extra limitations on top like graylisting etc. with #ArcaneChat and #DeltaChat you can have sub-second (#ENCRYPTED) email delivery
