One of the benefits of eSpeak-NG is that it doesn't make assumptions like reading "CUP" is Cuban Pesos (hello US OneCore voices) - but the flip side is that eSpeak will read the year 1987 as "nineteen hundred eighty seven". If you'd like it to read that as "nineteen eighty seven" & learn a little #regex on the way, then @fastfinge has you covered with the "Correcting Years With NVDA and Espeak" blog post: stuff.interfree.ca/2025/08/28/…

This week's In-Process is out. Featuring all the news on NVDA 2025.2, info on the upcoming NVDA 2025.3, a recap on restarting after updating (no we're not about to enforce that!) and a look into the namesake feature of Microsoft Windows... and just how complicated ARE the Windows+arrow key commands? (Very, but we break it down for you!) All that and more, available now: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-2…

Following a discussion in the user group, which essentially revolved around "After updating to a new version of NVDA, it should FORCE you to restart the PC", I thought I'd just ask here: SHOULD NVDA force you to restart the PC after updating? (The argument being, that sometimes we see quirky behaviour after updating but before restarting. Currently we simply advise you to restart if you encounter something unexpected).

  • Yes, NVDA should force you to restart after updati (14%, 12 votes)
  • No, don't make me restart after updating. (85%, 73 votes)

Here's a 20-minute tutorial In which I demonstrate how I use #Suno AI to cover/remix my tracks in new ways. A few people have been asking me to show this because the website's a little incomprehensible, so I thought I would do a bit of an explainer.
Here, I'm using NVDA screen-reader in windows with Google Chrome.

If you are attempting this on MacOS, you will likely have to interact with the item and move over to the play button before being able to do VO+Space to play your item. If you don't, nothing much happens.
In all other respects, MacOS works very similarly to windows, so you should be able to follow along with this demo successfully.

A really nice thing you can do in #NVDASR is if you're on a website with lots of video announcements such as "0 seconds, 5 seconds," etc., you can hit NVDA+5 to turn off these announcements, use the site and hit NVDA+5 again to turn them back on for other uses (this broadly controls dynamic content). I was working with an unfamiliar site yesterday and this was really helpful to cut down on the extra speech so I could focus on the site. I just wanted to share this in case it might help others.

If you're keen to try the beta, but aren't sure how, download & run it just like any other copy of NVDA!

You can install it, but we recommend most users create a portable copy. Tips here: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-9…

Particularly test any highlighted features or those mentioned in the change log.

GitHub is the best place to report issues - steps here: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-1…

Or ask here or via email!

What other tips would experienced users give new testers?

So in designing the prototype for the physical remote for #NVDASR, I discovered that you can still buy the part of the #Doubletalk speech synthesizer that does the talking.
this makes me very happy and, alongside the NVDA project, I'm going to work on a lighter version of the old Book Port device when I take my work sabbatical. Broadly to meet my own needs first, of course.
This would mean a Telephone-style keypad for controls, an audio jack, at least 24 hours of playback on a single charge if I can manage it, USB-C for power and an SD card for storage. A belt/pocket clip is utterly essential for me.
Initial input would be text files only, progressing eventually to other text-based formats.
I have no interest in DAISY support or podcasts, although Internet radio is a distinct possibility if you're happy to halve your runtime.
RSS would be relatively straightforward too but, again, but decrease the battery life due to being online.
File transfer would be wireless, not USB.
FM Radio is on my wish list.
Voice memo style audio recording is also a potential, as I do use that with Rockbox at present.

Why, you ask?

Mostly because I haven't used Doubletalk in almost 2 decades and want to see if i can keep it going.

And largely for the cools. 'Oh yes, I'm just reading this book on a gadget I built myself.'

#NVDASR users.
I posted a few weeks ago about a physical NVDA remote.
A small battery powered device with a Perkins-style Braille input keyboard and speaker, which let you control your online computer running NVDA from anywhere (The remote protocol is very lightweight and works quite reasonably, even with a 3G data connection).
I was thinking SIM slot, USB-C for power, and a builtin speaker and 3.5mm headphone jack.

Would you buy one?

  • yes, and pay up to $100. (63%, 12 votes)
  • I'd pay more than $100 for this thing (36%, 7 votes)
  • Nope, you're crazy. (10%, 2 votes)

Is there a way to make the copying file dialog on Windows more accessible? I found out you can actually see which file is currently transferred and at which rate on the screen, which is being completely left out by #NVDASR

Amiyah is a new PC user who really likes NVDA Remote Access! "It helps when I don’t know how to download stuff on my computer. or when I’m stuck on something, my friends can connect and help me out. I like that it’s free and also it helps other blind people so once again thank you.”

Thank you Amiyah! Have you tried NVDA Remote Access yet? It's new in NVDA 2025.1! nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2025-1-…

You don't get any NVDA 2025 until halfway through the year, then 3 come along at once! It's like buses, only better because #NVDASR is amazing.

NVDA 2025.1.2 has been released: nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2025-1-…

This release fixes a crash when opening certain Microsoft Word versions before version 16.0.18226.

Also, a reminder that if you have downgraded from 2025.x to earlier versions, your profile may become corrupted. This can cause your profile to be reset to factory defaults when you update again, but NVDA should work correctly after that.

I just submitted a feature request to #NVDA regarding creation of a more useful mechanism for editing the configuration on secure screens, to replace or augment the current clunky and all-or-nothing settings copy feature. Please give it some love! I don't think @NVAccess actually partakes in the whole vote with thumbs-ups to increase priority, but doing so might serve as a useful metric for how widely desired this is anyway, which could theoretically help with triage. If anyone who sees this is skilled and willing enough to actually turn this into a pull request, I would be very greatful! Otherwise, hopefully someone at NVAccess will take it up! It's about time we got a more useful means of customizing that other layer of NVDA.

Has anyone else seen this? Partner @RainbowRemedy is having this strange bug with #NVDA and Chrome. Whenever she alt tabs out of chrome, NVDA just hangs, sometimes completely. Working inside of chrome is fine, and as I understand it, sometimes it will recover after a few seconds and it behaves fine on the rest of the system. She's on NVDA 2025.1, but this was happening on 2024 as well. Have checked after getting rid of any add-ons that might get involved with browsers. Haven't yet checked with all add-ons disabled to my knowledge, but unsure if that would make any difference, the list is rather short, but includes IBMTTS which she needs to be able to use it really. Has anyone else seen this and knows of a fix for it? Windows 10. Will not accept "don't use chrome" as an answer. #NVDASR #blind

Attention #nvdasr users. By now, you all should have gotten the latest version of #RemoteIncidentManager, version 3.4.3. This makes Remote Incident Manager entirely compatible with NVDA2025.1.
