I'm watching the F-Droid issue and it looks like Google may release a new version of aapt2 that can run on the older hardware of the F-Droid buildserver but that doesn't seem to have happened yet. Hopefully this changes in the near future.

If anyone is curious, my current Android setup is as follows:

I use #NeoStore or #Droidify (currently Neo Store, the new stats support is just too tempting) with the #IzzyOnDroid repo as primary app source, the #FDroid repo as secondary.

If I need something not on either of those, I will use #AuroraStore to access #GooglePlay.

Random APKs from GitHub or whatever only in very very specific cases. I will generally wait until the app drops on F-Droid or (preferably) IzzyOnDroid.

I bought an #Android 4.3 tablet (#Alcatel onetouch, 18 £). Sure it is outdated but is sufficient. I found several great apps via #fdroid and transferred them via Bluetooth (saved as txt) from my current phone to the old tablet (tablet certificate expired, need to update this). Is there any resource to find more apps in the meantime? I looked at #izzyondroid a bit.

@IzzyOnDroid do you have be chance a filter for the minimum Android version I missed in the web interface?

If you feel that #FDroid downloads are slow, just press ❎ to cancel the download then press Install/Update again so it picks up some other mirror.

There's no unified "F-Droid server" but several and a dozen or more mirrors.

Each time you try again it will use a different one. Hopefully the next one will have better bandwidth.

/PS: We've seen the reports, we will look into it.

I'm seeing a lot of people are confused about my frustration with #FDroid's #ReproducibleBuild system, so let me explain:

Sometimes, F-Droid compares their build result with the developer's, meaning both parties (F-Droid and the app dev) agree on the expected result. Other times, they just build their own APK a second time in the same environment, never checking if the developer got the same result.

Both these cases are labeled "Reproducible Build", despite the huge differences.

@abeorch Well, I get the feeling. And yeah, #Fdroid _is_ my preferred store. But sadly, Google Play Store is the distribution channel that 99% of the Android users know, trust and use.

And on the app promotion page, (app.mapcomplete.org), Fdroid is placed on top with a reason ;)

I think realistically, hiding completely is impossible. However, you can regain a lot more privacy by using private Open Source Android apps from #IzzyOnDroid and #FDroid instead of closed source apps filled with trackers. I personally recommend using Droid-ify as it is simple and preconfigures both IzzyOnDroid and F-Droid: apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/a….

I just updated the list of weather stations used by #TinyWeatherForecastGermany , and it turns out my app now supports 6291 locations worldwide.

#Catima 2.34.5 is out!

This is a maintenance release that targets Android 15 and fixes a crash.

The app will look slightly uglier on some devices, due to Google's changes in how drawing over the system and navigation bar works. Sadly, supporting proper edge-to-edge requires extensive rewrites (help very welcome!), so I opted to at least ensure we target Android 15 before any deadlines.
