Anyone know how long it takes for Mastodon instances to update their profile pic caches for followed accounts?

I’m still seeing the initial one for our Owncast account. No idea how to manually force a refresh either.

The free open source livestreaming platform OwnCast has set up a demo server at:

watch.owncast.online

It currently runs a loop of videos by people who self-host their livestreams using OwnCast, along with short videos promoting other libre projects.

If you run a free open project and have a short video (under 1 minute), you can have it added to this loop by contacting @owncast.

OwnCast servers include Fediverse compatibility, so you can follow them from Mastodon etc. When a stream you follow goes live, you'll see a message telling you about it in your timeline.

I count myself lucky to be part of the #Fediverse. With a couple million other fedizens this decentralized #SocialNetwork has completely different dynamics to it. Where #BigTech is shunned, #ads are a big no-no, and it is people themself who built the place.

It represents a humane technology field lab of sorts. A place where a unique #culture thrives, and that has vibes representative to the #EarlyWeb.

5/..

My personal #vision is to work towards a #Peopleverse. This concept has nothing at all to do with #Metaverse, and likeness is coincidental. The Peopleverse is the human stratum on top of the #Fediverse that enriches our life with online technology and connects us to our fellow human beings, wherever they are.

Hello !Friendica Support why is this post "unlisted" on #Friendica, but "visible to everyone" on #Pixelfed, where I composed it from?

OwnCast is a sort of Fediverse alternative to Twitch. It lets people host their own video livestream with a chat window at the side, and OwnCast accounts can be followed from Mastodon etc.

You can find out more about @owncast at owncast.online, and they have a directory of streamers at directory.owncast.online

If you follow an OwnCast account from Mastodon, you will see a post from them in your timeline telling you when the account has gone live.

Also, if you follow an OwnCast account or boost its posts, this will appear in the livestream's chat window (see the attached picture).

Some OwnCast accounts you can try following right now include:

@live (soulful house music shows)

@hatnix (Linux gaming streams)

@Hamish - (retro gaming streams)

(Note that some OwnCast accounts do not have Fediverse switched on yet, so they won't be visible on Mastodon etc)

#Github is in the heart of Software Development. Countless vendors see 'Github support' as essential. GH has cemented its position as dominant player.

#Fediverse can change all that. With @forgefed working on specs and #Gitea #ForgeFriends and #ForgeFlux projects coding federation support.

The entire ecosystem can be opened and democratized!

But are #ForgeFed "code forge" specs sliced right? Or should we crowdsource specs for the "Free Software Development Lifecycle"?

I really like the ideals of #Calmtech and wonder what elements of this might be applicable to future #Fediverse apps...

You can create your own Mastodon server even without technical knowledge 🐘

There are companies that provide Managed Hosting, where you pay a monthly fee and they do all the technical stuff including hosting, installation and updates.

You own and run the server, they do the tech stuff behind the scenes.

The best managed hosting companies for Mastodon are probably masto.host and federation.spacebear.ee

It's not just Mastodon either, there are lots of Fediverse platforms and other online services available through managed hosting. Try visiting growyourown.services for more options (or follow them at @homegrown).

If you're currently on a massive server like mastodon.social, you might want to consider moving your account to a smaller server.

You can keep your followers when you change servers, here's how to do it: mstdn.social/@feditips/1079394…

You can find reliable servers at joinmastodon.org/communities (all the servers listed there agree to the covenant at joinmastodon.org/covenant). Try to pick one with fewer people.

There are lots of good things about smaller servers:

-Better moderation, because there are more staff per member.

-Smaller servers tend to have more personality, with a village feel.

-The local timeline on smaller servers is much more readable.

-Smaller servers protect the Fediverse as a whole from being taken over, because lots of smaller servers are harder to buy than a few big servers.

-It's easier to make a difference on smaller servers. It's easier to discuss things with the admin and other members.

#FediTips #MastoTips #Fediverse #Mastodon

Interesting way of putting it.
Are you the only moderator in that instance? in such a case minimum should be to leave the decision to someone else. If you decide for yourself about the moderation of yourself then I believe its pretty much an autocratic situation.

Somebody reported me to myself, y’all. How’s your day going? :)

Hint: if you don’t like my comparing Israel to Russia, go tell Israel to stop acting like Russia.

(And find out how the fediverse works before you go making an arse of yourself trying to censor me on my own personal instance.)

What is an ethical internet? What brings people to explore them?

Listen to @liaizon tackle common questions, concepts, and misconceptions about the #fediverse on @thefinalstrawradio

Did you know the fediverse is like 13 years old?! Yet it's come so far since.

One week ago I launched fediverse.info

Since then, 515 people registered and have been added to 1800+ topics!

Discovery is important, and while we strive to fill this void, our ultimate goal is to help standardize discovery across the fediverse.

Every #fedi project should have this directory! #activitypub #fediverse #fediverseInfo

😳
erm, I thought I'd make a thing.

It's a very basic #webRing for #amateurRadio people on the #fediverse 's personal sites.

It only has itself and my site so far.

I thought it would be a cool idea to create a #lemmy #community for #fediverse/ #federation #introductions!

Problem with introduction posts is they tend to get buried after a short while and depending on how many other instances yours may know about others someone's intro may not federate that well (or fast) with the rest of the network.

Plus, some instances like #mastodon only allow 500 characters in a post. Not a lot of room to write an introduction. 🙂

This was one of the use cases and goals I had for creating federated.community to kind of provide an alternative.

Anyway, to kick things off I've posted my own introduction and you're more than welcome to post one as well.

I also thought it would be cool to allow instance admins to post an "introduction" about their Instances too, so new users to the fediverse could find a little more information out about people's instances too.

Thoughts? Is this a good idea? What do you think?

I just played a bit with

:python: #mastodonpy :python: 👍

to analyze a thread that I started yesterday and which developed slightly above average reply-dynamics. – at least for my standards.🙂

I plan to improve the visualization and then publish the #jupyternotebook and the interactive SVG-File with links to each toot.

Give this toot a fav if you want to get informed. (I can process that via the API 🤓)

#python #opendata #fediverse #visualization

And in continuation, you can also subscribe to a specific post/toot. You should get updates for it too. I've tried it with a bog-standard RSS feed generator and subscribed to it on Tiny Tiny RSS. #rss #mastodon #fediverse @feditips

I have been on Twitter for 13 years but mostly read stuff. My recent tweets have mostly been about my papers or conferences, so I decided to join scholar.social. With this account, I want to give the #fediverse another go. I am happy to connect with scientists worldwide, especially in the areas of #softwareengineering, #edtech, #edutech, and related fields.

We are on #Mastodon!

Oh look, another software anarchist, how original.

I'm part of a small software consultancy co-op based in Copenhagen. I wish I didn't have to toil under capitalism, but here we are.

I'm trying out the #fediverse experience to see if I can find more of a sense of community than the very Personal Brand focused Dunking of Twitter.

So far, it's felt pretty welcoming on here: lots of people, lots of tips on how to get started. But I have yet to find My People on here. #introduction #introductions

Friends of the #fediverse. Lots of changes coming to the #Thunderbird #email client in the next three months. Would love if you could all grab the Daily or Beta release and let me know thoughts and concerns as you watch the changes roll in.

Go to the bottom of site to choose version:

Feel free to ping me with your experience!

As an alternative to FediTips, you might want to also check out @noelle's "Increasingly Less-Brief Guide to Mastodon":

It's got slightly different takes on many issues, but hopefully seeing a different perspective will give you a fuller understanding of how Mastodon works.

As a general rule of thumb, I won't follow anyone who:

• Hasn't posted anything yet.

• Doesn't have a bio

It's not that I don't like or don't trust you if you're one of those people, but because ActivityPub has no big scarey algorithm backing it, you must put actual effort into curating your feed. I imagine this is true for quite a few others on the #fediverse.

though I'm highly critical of much of the Web3 space it is undeniable that there's a lot of innovative ideas circling round. And projects more often do 'productization' better (if only to package a scam).

Buzzword-o-meter on Perspect3vism site is way up the scale but ideas are interesting.

I'd like to see stuff like fluxsocial.io/ but for #Fediverse #ActivityPub. Especially visions going 'beyond apps' to composable personal experiences have appeal. Dunno if we ever get there.

Hey Jews of the Fediverse, I'm working on a new instance for Jews called Babka Social and I'd love your help in making it great!

Please help me by filling out this form and boosting it so I can make it awesome!
