Exciting news! The Ubuntu Community is now on Matrix. As of today, we're now fully federated with the rest of "The Matrix"! Anyone can join the party 🎉

Did you know that you can also find the Ubuntu HPC community on Matrix? We're an active group supercomputing professionals that meet every Wednesday over Jitsi. Just look for hpc:ubuntu.com when exploring rooms.

Hope to see you there with the rest of the Ubuntu Community 😎

Upgrade na #Ubuntu 23.10 svižný, jen mě trochu vylekala obrazovka, co se objeví po rebootu. Když to odklepnu, tak systém naběhne.

True story: Mozilla's @mconley is a legend. (Also, he worked on Mozilla Messenger, and is responsible for #Ubuntu shipping with Thunderbird!)

His enthusiasm is so contagious that just listening to this podcast might turn you into a software engineer! Join us for ThunderCast episode 2 as we reminisce about the early days of the internet, and talk about Firefox features more people should be using.

I know they're a sponsor and all, but I find that running a full vps running either #Ubuntu or #Debian and running the semi-automated install of Hestia Control Panel is far more flexible than shared hosting on Squarespace. The panel does most things in an automated and easy-to-use way, and it is free and open source. They even have a graphical tool on their website to tailor the install to your specific needs so that you get all you need and nothing you don't..

Years ago elementary was approached by Canonical to become an official Ubuntu flavor. “All” we had to do was offer Snap out of the box. We debated it—being able to offload some additional infrastructure concerns was attractive—but we realized it helped Canonical more than it helped us, and we had chosen Flatpak for all of its benefits as covered here:

As #Linux users, or even as #Windows users, we often hear a lot of preconceived notions, like "Linux is faster", or "Windows has better battery life".

Well, I decided to quantify all of it in a complete benchmark between Windows 11 and #ubuntu

CPU and GPU benchmarks, disk speeds, thermals, internet speeds, gaming benchmarks, battery life, I looked at everything on the same device, and the conclusions were... surprising:

We had a great chat with the #Ubuntu and @ubports teams at #FOSDEM today.

Special shout-outs to Thunderbird Council member Philipp Kewisch (far right) and @ahoneybun (second from right) of @system76!

Thanks for spreading the knowledge, guys.

I guess one of the drawbacks of getting back into "Lets run Linux as a primary desktop" is realizing that yeah, the linux community is STILL full of egos that don't like being told what they should and should not do, no matter what the impact on the users.

Case in point gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-s…

Short version: Gnome maintainers allow their own screenshot tool to run without restriction, but block all others.

Great fun.

My Windows 9x-inspired theme for GTK2/GTK3/Metacity, "Memphis 98"

It's got a few bugs and issues -- some original, and some because of things that have changed in MATE or GTK in the few years since I first worked on it. But it still mostly holds up.

It's for MATE, but should work with varying degrees of success on other desktop environments.

Mate radsej #Ubuntu, ale z rozlicnych dovodov ste nuteni pouzivat #Windows 10 alebo 11? Mozete oslavovat. #WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux 2) bolo oficialne vydane a vdaka tomu mozete pracovat s Ubuntu aplikaciami a nastrojmi ako doma.

Anyone know of a tool like Multipass (github.com/canonical/multipass) but for Fedora (and, ideally, Fedora CoreOS). So you can, for example, easily play with instance configuration, etc., locally?

I know I can use libvirt (and I did set it up after quite a struggle) but it’s a huge hassle in comparison.
