Well it would appear that I’m going to be embarking on a crash course in learning the ins and outs of #NVDA in a big hurry. #JAWS is initiating some hocus pocus that I’m not the least bit happy with. They are going to start requiring all of us who use JAWS to create accounts and sign in. JAWS is not Microsoft 365. It’s a screenreader, not a suite of programs. What would be the purpose of requiring this? I’m just not comfortable with this, so it looks like I’m going to stop using the screenreader I’ve been using for 20 plus years. I’m told that #NVDA is as robust as JAWS, I most certainly hope so. I’m disappointed that there aren’t more options out there. For not the first time over the years, I’m finding myself missing good old WindowEyes. #A11Y

can someone tell me how to force remove addons that are incompatible for #NVDA, and using the store to remove them does not work? when we try to remove them, NVDA restarts and says there is an error removing two addons, so we can't seem to remove them. any help on this would be appreciated.

So ...there's various situations where .NET UI #accessibility just isn't as automatic as it should be. Loads of times I see perfectly good label texts within buttons, listItems, etc. that for whatever internal reason isn't actually the button's #accessible name. This has been a problem for close to twenty years now and I doubt #microsoft is ever going to fix it, so I had a crack at it. All the disclaimers apply, this is mostly just a thing I wrote for myself and I figured it might be helpful to some: github.com/zersiax/dotnet_fix
If you have to use .NET apps that seemingly have a bunch of unlabeled buttons, but object navigation reveals text inside, this might help some. No guarantees, and if it breaks you get to keep both pieces :P #foss #NVDA #screenReader #blind

I remember one day when JAWS was crashing in combined with Firefox and Flash. I switched to #NVDA, forgot to get back and realized it later and stayed with #NVDASR. One thing what amazed me that JAWS in those days was unable to report battery perncetage on my laptop, NVDA worked fine.

The thing about JAWS vs NVDA is that it doesn't matter if @freedomscientific packs it with objectively better features. NVDA is free, easy to use (within the context of desktop screen readers), and it's good enough for the vast majority of screen reader users. Want to browse the web? Want to check your email? Need to type up an assignment? Need to track data with spreadsheets? Want to write some code? Want to run virtual machines? Just wanna keep up with your communities on Discord? Want to test your app for accessibility? NVDA can do all of those things. There is no faffing, no caveats, no running obscure commands, and no license to install. You download it. You install it. You run it. That's it. Want it to do more stuff? Open the addon store which is built into NVDA. If you know Python, you can write your own addons and share them with other users.
FS is relying on organizations like schools and governments where paying hundreds and hundreds of dollars is normal and expected and you can't just install an addon to an existing app. This does not work outside of those organizations. The blind kid who wants to listen to memes and keep up with their friends doesn't have several hundred dollars per year, but they probably know that they can go download a free screen reader that will let them listen to memes and keep up with their friends.
NVDA is winning because it's good enough for most people and costs nothing. If you do have the money to spare for a license and you want to use JAWS because you prefer it, that's fantastic! I'm glad you found a screen reader that you like. Most people will choose the free option because they just wanna listen to their favorite streamer while they type up their research paper.

I am trying to figure out why Facebook will not log in on Edge with #NVDA, the information is correct, works on Edge on my phone, even saved it there to have it auto fill, my best guess is uBlock.

What could be the reason for #NVDA #NVDASR not running on UAC screens on my work Laptop even though I've copied the settings (including add ons, etc) to use on secure screens through the settings with administrator permissions?
Note: I don't have the administrator permissions when the UAC screen pops up, but NVDA should still start regardless. Also, on the login screen it works, it's really just the UAC (User account control) dialog, where its gone.

I've been using IndentNav for a while to write Python. Recently I installed BrowserNav and now get way more positional info about HTML elements. It took some getting used to, but now the beeps and tones help me get an idea of the physical layout of a site or electron interface.
It's similar to IndentNav, but it has more rules and works with web browsers instead of being focused on code in a text editor. Positioning is one of the pieces of information that I forgot how much I miss from my sighted days. It's especially helpful with API reference docs that rely on positional encoding. Since there's more info in the browser, I only have beeps instead of precise indentation levels to get a general idea of the structure

To #blind people with experience with #PowerPoint, I need help! My school wants me to create a #presentation with speaker notes and graphics, and I'm having extreme trouble even getting started. My info text box with my name, school, and date covers everything up, and I can't figure out moving it or how to get to speaker notes. I normally create assignments with #LaTeX, but I kept running into issues making a presentation that way. I'm on #Windows using #NVDA. Disability services made this sound doable and even easy, but so far that doesn't seem to be the case.

I now have a copy of Eloquence that works on the 64-bit alphas of #NVDA, with the following issues: say all on the web doesn't work (it stops whenever the type of element changes for reasons I don't understand), and dialect switching doesn't work (but it doesn't crash everything anymore). If you want to play, you need to follow the build instructions; I only understand about a quarter of this code and have no intention of actually releasing things that are still broken: github.com/fastfinge/eloquence_64/

grrrrrrrrr! so I installed the station playlist studio addon for #NVDA, and it isn't as bad as it was, but the whole system hult things are happening again! I know I can't be the only one that is seeing this, but here it is, and nothing happened with the last time, when I tried to show people what was going on. maybe I should just get rid of the addon again.

Thanks to #NVDA #NVDASR ocr feature, I installed Spitfire audio and BBC symphony and I can somehow navigate through it inside reaper. KK will be more efficient but I currently don't have one.

Well I have done it. as of November 4, or 5 my JFW will no longer work. it is still on the laptop, but I will get that removed as soon as I am done reading the fan fic I am reading. So basically, I am now on #NVDA for the fore seeable future. there is a reactivate button, if I choose to do this before the fifth. the fifth of next month is when I would be charged for it, so there you go. If something doesn't work with NVDA, I just won't use it I guess.
