The next MapComplete community call is scheduled for friday the 29th of March, at 14:00 Brussels time.

This is a good moment to pass by, ask questions or get in touch about the last developments about #MapComplete
This happens in our #Matrix chatroom at https://app.element.io/#/room/#MapComplete:matrix.org ; more information here https://osmcal.org/event/2711/

Well you can always use #matrix and connect all your accounts in one.

Hey @matrix and @austin do you (or anyone) know if there's a general purpose Matrix community forum? The sort of place we can get help triaging problems with apps without bothering the devs with a plethora of issue tickets that turn out to be fixable at our end.

#FluffyChat v1.18.0 has been released 🥳

FluffyChat v1.18.0 adds some new features, fixes a lot of bugs and improves the notifications on Android by showing them in a conversations style. Voice messages got the ability to change the play speed and the status header is now optional.

I'm looking for a solution to only allow people with a specific email domain to join a Matrix room.

Ideally a bot that would be able to send emails, verify the user and invite them into the room.

Any idea or suggestion?

@matrix @element

Today in #MatrixRooms: Searching #Matrix rooms from multiple places, just like with #SepiaSearch or #LemmyVerse.

Detailed instructions can be found in the alt text. In short, for #Element and #SchildiChat Web/Desktop user:
0. Open search in Element (Ctrl+K)
1. In the "Show" dropdown menu, press "Add new server...". Type https://matrixrooms.info and proceed.
2. Pick newly added rooms directory.

More on how to make this work in mobile apps, let all users of your instance benefit from this rooms directory or set this up as a search engine on your very own #SearXNG:

you know, i really want to like #matrix. i really do. in fact, it's the only group orient IM i use. but it's lack of decent mod tools is pathetic.

communities are being harassed with #csam and #vore and they can't do anything about it. i'm actually ashamed that i recommend it to people.

this isn't new, and they've lost huge communities to it. i'm actually fucking pissed. this should be number one priority, no excuses.

do something

@matrix I can't sign in to my Matrix account anymore, it either just says "Homeserver can't be reached" (using Matrix.org homeserver) or it just hangs while it is signing in. I tried again on different days and the same thing keeps happening. I was able to sign in successfully last week so I don't know why this is happening now. Does anyone else have this problem?

I want to try #matrix instead of discord again, anyone got starting homeserver recommendations?

Use XMPP! It's totally secure and federated. The only thing you can use it to talk about is how much you love XMPP and how much you hate Matrix.

What is We Distribute, exactly? 🤔

We Distribute is a CC-licensed open media project. It serves as a people-focused tech publication, with the goal of informing and educating people about three things:

1. Decentralized Communications
2. User empowerment
3. The future of the Internet

Most of what we do involves reporting on the day-to-day developments of the #Fediverse. In fact, our articles are ActivityPub-enabled, and integrate directly into the network.

However, the Social Web / Decentralized Social movement involves far more efforts and technologies that we think are also worth reporting on: #Matrix, #XMPP, #Bluesky, #Nostr, #SecureScuttlebutt, and #Solid all bring interesting pieces to the puzzle.

Our ultimate goal is to showcase the ongoing efforts to change the shape and form of the Internet itself, at a grassroots level. Join us on this exciting journey. #WeDistribute

@lil5 Thanks for reaching out, and sorry your email didn't get a response. Our web team operates through issues, PRs, and discussion in #matrix-web:matrix.org.

Would you be willing to open an issue on the repository? That way nothing gets lost in translation and folks can ask follow up questions as needed.

We can open the issue for you, it just might take longer for the team to process.

We’d like to say thank you to @matrix for giving the Ubuntu home server a home and in that giving the ubuntu UK LoCo a home room on #Matrix :ubuntuuk: :ubuntu: https://mastodon.matrix.org/@matrix/111937407282226136

Two things I need to find: A new Matrix homeserver (currently on matrix.org) and a good Lemmy instance...

I mean, I could selfhost both of them, but I think that would blow up my available resources...

Edit: I don't want ANY finacial offers. I am here to seek advise, to get into a discussion if an instance is actually fitting. If I would want to a "private" instance, I will do it by myself!

#ILoveFreeSoftware, you love #FreeSoftware. Let's get that down. Most of the time you don't even notice that you're using a device running a :linux: #Linux kernel, :gnu: #GNUtils or services like :apache: #ApacheWebserver, :matrix: #Matrix etc. as they just work and don't get in your way; don't bother you reading ancient 📜 #EULA; don't track you ...

But have you ever said thank you to all the :linus: contributors supporting the projects and sustaining #SoftwareFreedom?! If not, then today's your lucky day. :awesome:

Create a sharepic via @fsfe's https://sharepic.fsfe.org/#ilovefs tool and use the #ILoveFS hashtag to show your appreciation. Additionally, spend some time looking up the #Fediverse handle of your favorite projects and mentioned them.

Happy I 🧡 Free Software Day!

The further #Matrix goes the more obvious it becomes we should've stuck to #XMPP. The developer time wasted on Matrix is immense, imagine if that effort would've been stuck into making a nice XMPP server implementation that plays well with #Docker or #Kubernetes, with all the basic features people desire baked in by default. They would've had time to spare on a nice client if they felt this was needed to make a nice complete package to market.

I wish that #Matrix (and #Synapse) were better designed.

It has become among the most popular open messaging protocols, but it remains a scalability nightmare.

It's literally the Blockchain of messaging. Its current state is given by the sum of the whole chain of events received since t=0. It's a brittle append-only ledger, and any modifications you do to it are very likely to break it.

Do you have a huge 100GB database and you want to clean up old stuff? Sorry, you can't. There are some non-official solutions for compacting the events, but they're all likely to break your db - and none worked so far in my case.

Do you have users on your instance that entered a busy room on matrix.org? Then you'll get all the join/leave events of that busy room on your db, with no way of deleting them, and nothing to do unless your users exit those rooms.

Did you start your instance by toying with the default SQLite backend, and now that it's become big you want to move to Postgres? Sorry, no official guides provided, only unofficial procedures scattered across a bunch of blogs.

Do you want to change the name of your server? Sorry, you can't. All the events are tightly coupled to your server name. The advised solution is to simply start a new instance.

Do you want to keep the same server name but spin off a new instance? Sorry, you can't, because your server name, your keys and the events sent to other servers are all tightly coupled, so your new instance may not be able to reliably exchange messages with servers that were federated to your previous one.

Do you want to migrate your account and conversations to a new server, or even just get a backup of your data? Well, you can just forget it, because there's no way of disentangling the thick mesh of events and moving it somewhere else.

Such a rigid and brittle implementation shouldn't have become an open de facto standard without much questioning about its poor design decisions.

At the very least, some official tools must be provided to enable admins to compact events. If the size of the database is guaranteed to increase indefinitely, then entry barriers against self-hosting are only going to increase.

Exciting news! The Ubuntu Community is now on Matrix. As of today, we're now fully federated with the rest of "The Matrix"! Anyone can join the party 🎉

Did you know that you can also find the Ubuntu HPC community on Matrix? We're an active group supercomputing professionals that meet every Wednesday over Jitsi. Just look for hpc:ubuntu.com when exploring rooms.

Hope to see you there with the rest of the Ubuntu Community 😎

I would rather to see a bounty to get @matrix to stop using #CaaC (Cloudflare as a Crutch) and switch to #securityByDesign. I can’t be motivated to donate to #Matrix project until it shakes free from its tech giant dependency.

We are positively overwhelmed with the outpouring of support 🚀

People are responding to our call for help! We've also had a number of smaller organizations show up and begin the process of becoming supporting members.

This is encouraging progress, though we still have a lot of work to do to hit our fundraising goals.
