Join us for a walking tour of downtown Denver on our final day at #GUADEC2024! We've organized a group outing on July 24 for anyone attending in person. Want to join? Make sure to reserve your spot by July 10: events.gnome.org/event/209/pag…

Next week I will travel to #GUADEC #GUADEC2024 to Denver, CO, in the US.

Perhaps some of you have read my #OpenPrinting News from May where I tell that 2004 was a magic year and so we have a lot 20th anniversaries in FOSS now.

And the 2 keynotes on GUADEC are about 2 of them: Ryan Sipes, CEO of #Thunderbird @thunderbird and Stephanie Taylor, program lead of #GSoC!

All the Thunderbirdies there will be happy to see you! (And encouraging you to take it easy and hydrate while you adjust to the altitude.)

In his opening statement at the OSPOs For Good 2024 event, OFE Executive Director Astor Nummelin Carlberg called for ambitious open-source innovation policies to tackle major global challenges.

Hello hello Jamers 😎

A new version of Jami is available for all desktop users.😍

🚨Download it here : jami.net/download/

in reply to Jami

what's new? :) I guess the snap will update automatically at some point?
in reply to Jami

The linux desktop app is hanging after not even 5 minutes of use. There is no way to kill the process because it somehow blocks entire desktop environment, except for the rebooting of the whole machine.
There are also problems with the latest version of the android app. The message writing window/field is not visible from behind the keyboard. It doesn't jump up over it. There are some issues with the adding of the new contacts - "waiting for the peer message" info appears only.

HP is discontinuing its e-series LaserJet printers due to customer complaints, along with the HP+ and the "Instant Ink" toner subscription services tied to the hardware.

Enshittification enrages customers, destroys loyalty: who could POSSIBLY have imagined THAT?!?

So my local library's makerspace offered a free event where they brought in a bunch of old tower computers, printers, game consoles, etc., - laid out a bunch of iFixit toolkits - and let everyone (kids and adults alike) take everything apart!!!

One kid was hesitant because they didn't want to break anything and the library staff were like, none of it works. We're recycling and throwing everything out afterwards! Go hog wild, you won't get in trouble! You're meant to break it and take it apart!

The kid was absolutely enthusiastic and went to town!

I got to be a kid again and go into detail about all the computer parts and what each of the hardware did. It was awesome watching my children and other kids and adults interact, share tools, show off what they found.

I spoke with the organizer afterwards and asked if this was a regular thing and he said that he didn't have enough old equipment to make it regular. I laughed and said all of my friends have CLOSETS FULL OF THIS STUFF and the idea of giving it to a bunch of kids and adults to play with would bring joy and meaning to their life, lol!

I gave him the time to meet up with @fxbghackers and told him to make a community announcement about needing old electronics for donation to take apart and he'd get truck loads.

Just another way community helps each other out. This is post scarcity education.

Login.gov is hiring a Deputy Director, the position is open NOW: join.tts.gsa.gov/join/login-de…

You'd be joining a terrific team at a terrific time. And as one of I think 3 people who've had the role previously, I can attest to it being a great opportunity with huge impact.

Also - if past experience is any guide, despite a limit of 400 applications, this posting could still close very soon. So if you are interested in applying, get it in *today*!

Let me check… is still the year 2024? Apparently, not at Trimble…

this is nothing. Last week I was wondering why the customer portal of Dutch railways refuses generating the list of transactions in PDF.

After confirming that only my travel cards are affected, I remembered that I recently gave friendly names to my travel cards. 🤭

This article highlights the accessibility barriers found on websites promoting tourism for European smart cities. None of the websites conformed to WCAG 2.1. The web pages need to be more accessible and effectively communicate the physical accessibility features that the cities offer potential tourists with disabilities. They are losing potential customers because of these issues. #accessibility emerald.com/insight/content/do…

Woooot! Thanks for checking out the beta and joining the 128 party a little early!
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

The only true hardship of testing Thunderbird beta is that the Toggle Word Wrap add-on is no longer compatible:

addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/t…

I depend on it when writing text emails containing code or formatted tables.

It's a niche usecase (mostly coders), but would be nice to have this as a built-in editor feature.

Pretty please from your loyal user and supporter? 😇🙏

Hey @thunderbird this should be a regular menu item. I have missed getting my overflowing septic tank emptied because of this feature you have made the default (causing me to miss the email where they were asking me for confirmation, because it was hidden away in a thread).
in reply to Thunderbird: Free Your Inbox

No, because the vast majority of emails in my inbox are not part of a thread, and also remain unread (they're usually automatically generated; most of the time the subject and sender tells me all I need to know). Most humans I know use other platforms (Signal etc) to have conversations, and I'll have to search my email for the two people I occasionally email with to see if I've missed their messages since the default changed.

I loved the FinalCut Pro UI elements for entering rotation data. One neat feature is that in addition to the swipe to choose an angle, if you long-press the dial goes into high-precision input mode.

I think I finally got the animation just right:

That text is way to friendly about select().

On Linux, APIs are really not built anymore with select() in mind, i.e. the assumption is that fds are now cheap, and people throw around with fds a lot in newer apis (i.e. consider bpf apis, cgroupv2 apis, pidfds, which all use a lot of fds). This will backfire if you use select() however, badly, because of the 1K limit.

See my comments about select() here:

Welp, I got my answers and the Yen is at its weakest level in a third of a century so it looks like I'll be able to tell you how it works from a first-hand perspective in about 2-4 weeks' time.

(FreeWrite didn't appeal because it's cloud-reliant. This thing uses UTF-8 text files and an SD card. Also, I've been pining for a Pomera since I saw one in Japan in 2007. Add 18 years of incremental improvements to what is basically a Japanese business writing tool …)

I'd love a version of this for blind people, but of course the screen would need to be a speaker. Braille output would be far too expensive, but a speech synthesizer would be doable.

Listening to an episode of Terminal Talk about IBM mainframes. They're discussing open source on zos and what's the first tool they mentioned? Curl of course.

@bagder is probably used to this. Where isn't curl available?

The new Tony Blair Institute report on public sector automation savings classifies the potential to automate a task based on… how much GPT-4 classifies a task as automatable.

Is this the worst method ever? It’s absurd, unserious, and any outlet reporting on this uncritically should be humiliated and ridiculed. (seen via @halcyene)

Hey @fdroidorg, how about we replace the "Non-Free Network Services" flag with two more specific Anti-Feature flags; "Non-Changeable Network Services" and "Proprietary Network Services";

forum.f-droid.org/t/propsosal-…

#SoftwareFreedom #Android #FDroid #AntiFeatures #NetworkServices

in reply to Strypey

I adopted those names from @fdroidorg where they were agreed upon, to avoid later confusion. And for that reason I prefer to stick with them – unless F-Droid decides on some different names and puts them live.
in reply to IzzyOnDroid ✅

@IzzyOnDroid
> I prefer to stick with them – unless F-Droid decides on some different names and puts them live

That's sensible. I've put my naming arguments on the forum. We'll see if anyone there cares to engage with them.

But I agree that getting the flag separation rolled out is a much higher priority. Now I know it's a WIP, any energy I put in will be to help that rollout.
