I'm trying not to post "surprised pikachu face" memes about all of the people discovering that tiktok is now censoring coverage of protests, and mentions of Epstein.

And I'm watching as everyone tramples over to Yet Another Corporate Platform where the same thing will happen in a few dozen months.

Ya'll need to get out for real.

Or at least have a backup that doesn't run on OPP (Other People's Platforms)

I started a documentation repo for #FOSDEM advise - for new and old visitors, attendees and speakers. I figure we can crowdsource it so bring your pull-requests. I will greatly appreciate help.

If not, I will populate it myself slowly over time but it won't be as good.

#FOSDEM folks, one tip: I’m not usually one to preach about masking, but air quality in the devrooms is terrible, ventilation nonexistent, and flu season is reaching its peak. Mask😷! Take it from someone who failed to do so at a conference last week, and is spending 4 days and counting miserable in bed (and it seems to not be getting any better yet)

Speaking of jumping ship, I store all my files in #Microsoft #OneDrive and would like to get rid of that dependency as I'm working to replace my workflow with #FLOSS tools where practical. Do y'all have recommendations for a #CloudStorage service which has reasonably #accessible clients for #ScreenReader users (I primarily use #Fedora Workstation 43 but also use #Windows 11, #Android, and #iOS), can sync to my local filesystem, and/or can appear in the #GNOME desktop File Manager? I'm not interested in self-hosting something like #Nextcloud, #OwnCloud, etc. Any suggestions or firsthand experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Here are recordings of two time and temperature lines. The first is in Lafayette, Tennessee, 615-666-8463. The second is in Louisville, Kentucky, 502-585-5961. One of these needs serious help, as it has for several months. In this cold weather, I'll leave it up to you to guess which one is in serious need of adjustment.

RE: infosec.exchange/@briankrebs/1…

I'm glad I visited the U.S. a year ago because I won't be able to anytime soon.

We knew this was coming, but now the clock is running. From Privacy International:

"Yesterday the Trump Administration announced a proposed change in policy for travellers to the U.S. It applies to the powers of data collection by the Customs and Border Police (CBP)."

"If the proposed changes are adopted after the 60-day consultation, then millions of travellers to the U.S. will be forced to use a U.S. government mobile phone app, submit their social media from the last five years and email addresses used in the last ten years, including of family members. They’re also proposing the collection of DNA."

PI linked to and summarized a Federal Register entry describing the proposed requirements:

-All visitors must submit ‘their social media from the last 5 years’

-ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) applications will include ‘high value data fields’, ‘when feasible’
‘telephone numbers used in the last five years’
-‘email addresses used in the last ten years’
-‘family number telephone numbers (sic) used in the last five years’
-biometrics – face, fingerprint, DNA, and iris
-business telephone numbers used in the last five years
-business email addresses used in the last ten years.

privacyinternational.org/news-…

The Federal Register entry says comments are encouraged and
must be submitted (no later than February 9, 2026) to be assured of consideration.

Dění ve Spojených státech mě děsí s každým dnem víc a víc. Vzdáleně vím o pár lidech ze zranitelných skupin, co odtamtud během posledních dvou let odešli - pár z nich do Evropy, potažmo EU - a čím dál víc se bojím, že to někteří další už nestihnou.

Hrozně moc doufám, že Evropa zůstane sjednocená, a nebude tímhle směrem sklouzávat, jakože některé státy už mají bohužel trochu našlápnuto 🙁

in reply to Kayla Eilhart (cz)

We are planning another #curl distro meeting this year, after the previous years' successful and productive gatherings.

It is a video meeting with peeps from the curl project meeting and talking with curl maintainers from "distros" shipping curl. And we don't specify what a distro is - as everyone is welcome.

This is very much work in progress - if you have ideas and proposals for agenda items, add them!

Hi, completely new to Mastadon but looking forward to meeting new friends with musical interests. I live in England, have a great pro acoustic treated home studio that despite a smattering of guitars is predominantly set up with hardware analog fixed architecture and modular synths. My music is instrumental melodic with strong classical influences from my time as a clarinetist and pianist.

Are there any "case studies" of whole communities moving to the fediverse, similar to the Forkiverse?

I'm thinking about writing a version of my article stefanbohacek.com/blog/fediver… and aim it at community organizers.

Things I have learned to do to a guitar either via an instructor or sheet music:

Golpe: tapping the soundboard with your fingernail
Slap harmonic: Literally hammering the 12th fret with your picking hand
Bending the neck forward or backward
Scraping the string lengthwise
Capirote: flicking the edge of the sound hole
Rapping the soundboard or side with a knuckle

They’re like, here is your precious musical instrument, now go beat the shit out of it

I know your intention isn't/wasn't to make this a foobar or winamp replacement, but damn, I could almost use this cute little thing as one! Plugin support would be hard, though. meep!

The internet connection here has been somewhat flaky the last couple of days, possibly weather-related, so I've been pretty much exclusively using AT&T mobile data, as it's more reliable than the fiber ISP. Go figure.

With two bars of signal, I'm getting around 450 Mb/sec down, anywhere between 7 and 22 Mb/sec up.

Tonight, I connected my iPhone 16 Pro to one of the USB-C ports of my Mac to use my phone as a wired hotspot, and I noticed lots of jitter, packet loss, and very high latency that I wasn't seeing either on the device itself, or when using it as a WiFi hotspot.
I'd think a direct connection would be better, but apparently not.

Good morning. Starting my trip to #FOSDEM at this ungodly hour. Local traffic to Helsinki Central, train to Turku, ship to Stockholm, night train to Malmö, and so on. Will stay a couple of nights on the way in a city where I haven’t been before: Düsseldorf, and from there take a bus to Brussels because of the Belgian train strike this week. Or, if the ICE trains from Cologne to Brussels seem to be running reliably anyway, go by train. Using #Interrail .

It is pretty annoying to spend time formatting code with a screen reader. I switched to automatic code formatters and stopped thinking about it. There is one for basically every popular language: Black for Python, clang-format for C and C++, swift-format for Swift, Prettier for JS, etc. For example, you just run `swift-format -rip .` before commiting, or I think you can even make Git do it for you via setting up a pre-commit hook. I think it's an easy quality of life upgrade! lol

Hey!!

Is anyone on here a Black birth worker or know one?

For my research, I am seeking to interview as many Black midwives (and other Blk birth workers, but midwifery is the central focus) as possible and get connected to birthing centers employing Black birth workers, esp. in the US South.

If you are/someone you know is interested, pls DM me! Thanks for reading!

Ok so hey #Canada #GenX especially people from #Winnipeg who spent time in Eaton Place downtown in the early 80s, because that is the specific instance of what I'm certain was in many government offices and such.

Ok. It is maybe 1980 I'm late single digits and I go downtown with my gramma a lot, and we spend a fair amount of time in Eaton Place, her doing whatever she did, and me doing a circuit of Petland, a record store on the second floor, the arcade, and near the North entrance of the South building, there was a government office of some kind.

In that government office, there was a computer. Not one that #retro heads would recognize, it was large, did simple colour graphics, and had a weird nonstandard keyboard about the size of a gigantic TV remote, on a curly cable. Possibly some sort of Unix thing and I think it was networked, presumably on the Internet.

It mostly did very boring stuff and I was just a kid, I didn't care about whatever its main functions were, but I had learned that if I entered f518, there was a graphical mystery house game of some kind.

I remember that office had a fair amount of techy stuff, like, there was a kind of pushbutton video jukebox where you could watch various promotional videos, I remember one of the things it played was a Folklorama ad with the "la-lalala-la-lalalaaa" earworm, which my older California chick cousin and I laughed at one summer day that we were all downtown.

I would really love to find out what was the deal with that computer system, though.

Great article, I agree with all of this. I worry about older people especially, my mom is a good example of this, who rely too much on LLMs to get information or conduct research. At the same time, they definitely have their uses, but I'm sick and tired of the hype. These things are not magic boxes, they are not some new species. They can do amazing things absolutely, but they're not the be all end all solution.

Pretty stoked that the feds completely misunderstand actual Americans. They especially miscalculated the willingness of white folk to stand up for marginalized members of our communities.

As with any group, we are not a monolith. They assumed it would be so and that was a bad assumption on their part.

Minneapolis showed us the way.

Let's get this done.

I would not be here except for the countless hours spent at my bedside as I grew up in and out of hospitals. They noticed infection when others missed it. They would sit in my room as I laid awake in pain as they charted. There is nothing or no way I can say thank you to my unsung heroes, my nurses, who worked with my doctors to heal me and save my leg from amputation. Think about nurses that have blessed you. Thank you nurses!

So, I'm now on Delta Chat and very curious to try it out. I actually read the entire help file and it's got me thinking about how nice it is to have an E2E messaging option that's fairly straightforward unlike Matrix, Session and SimpleX. All 3 of those have some technical hurdle you have to jump over while it feels like Delta Chat (going to continue assuming it's 2 words until someone corrects me) is a breath of fresh air. That was a rather frictionless sign-up process, while Signal demands you fork over your phone number. If you would like to say hello, just send me a direct message to start the process and I'll invite you to chat with me. #Privacy #E2EMessaging #deltaChat

May be hard for some to watch but is not extreme:

The killing of Alex Pretti: minute-by-minute analysis of video & stills from five different verified videos.

The videos show that Pretti "did not walk up to anybody from CBP in a threatening manner."

"There's nothing in the video evidence that we've seen thus far that would support" DHS's version of Pretti's intent.
