Catima 2.29.0 is out!

This release adds support for finding barcodes in PDF files[1] and dealing with multiple barcodes. It also properly colours the status bar during usage now.

As always, it's available on #GitHub, will soon be available on #IzzyOnDroid and will slowly roll out to other app stores.

That said, my thanks also goes to @obfusk who helps me a lot making #IzzyOnDroid safer. She caught several places in need of improvements, providing patches for some of them and giving advice (and proof-reading) for those I established myself. Some of the scripts used in that area also come from her.

So when thanking me for the repo, please everyone include Sylvia and her as well. Without them it wouldn't be the place it currently is! 😍

Hugs to both of you from me 🤗

Completely mind boggling to me that we threw away 5 billion phones in 2022.

Some of those could have been repurposed: smartphones are hardly innovating any more. The most eco-friendly phone is the one you already have.

We need to publicly support communities like @postmarketOS who work on making these phones repurposable, and @gnome that work on making a polished mobile experience that serves people, not creepy corporations.

Here's a neat exploration of the curb cut effect for accessibility in @gnome - using accessibility tools to aid in testing automation! Has pros and cons identified in the article, but interesting nonetheless.

Ooh. Coming on July 11...

Best known as the author of Earthsearch, James Follett wrote over 50 radio dramas, and 25 novels. This gripping 3-book series, adapted and abridged for BBC Radio and read by Nigel Anthony, explores what takes place when a West Sussex village becomes cut off from the outside world by an alien force field after a UFO crash-lands.

Following a violent storm, the village of Pentworth is plagued by bizarre events. A strange crab-like mechanical creature is seen scuttling in the shadows, two visiting investigators from the Radio Communications Agency disappear in the local ‘plague swamp’ and the supplies of gas, electricity and water begin to falter. Then, suddenly, an invisible, impenetrable sphere appears, completely enclosing the town. With the residents trapped and unable to escape, a battle between good and evil begins...

Now I have a lot more hope and enthusiasm for the Piper voices, so this weekend I will re-train Mac_alex, Keynote, and Votrax using a bit more data, + finetune from the HFC_male variant which will minimize the cutting off of words. These will be released as new RT voices and you will be able to install either type of voice to compare differences amongst them.

I'm thinking it has more to do with the quality of tuned data and which model you initially finetune from. HFC_male for example appears to have less of them than finetuning from Kusal in my experience, so my guess is it's something related to the dataset that way. (but yes, sadly, even Mac Alex voice has a slight amount of this on some but not all words - it's improved from prior models by some but not fully solved.)

@pvagner ooh yeah. I wonder how the quality of other language fine-tuned models are. That could make a big difference too - I know there are Hungarian ones too, so I may try to train a Brailab one just for fun one of these days to test that out. Sourcing good quality data for other languages is so much harder, wish it wasn't. So you may need to try to train from scratch with 2-3 hours of data to see if it can do better.
in reply to Peter Vágner

@pvagner @mush42 I do think it was an issue before streaming came around, but more so with some voices over others. Like Ryan Medium always felt like a super lower quality model to me over something like HFC_male which is very good at not cutting words off in the original model. I'm not sue if a pre-emptive opening of the audio stream is required, this would slow down processing but maybe we can get more consistent wording as balannce.

Especially because they don't have to release streaming numbers, these corporations don't have any reason to behave rationally in their business decisions.

These companies are so big that this isn't a question of numbers, math and making things add up, it is a question of narratives and the narrative right now is that corporations should be cutting employees and assets.

As long as most executives fall in line like sheep, the narrative is preserved.

Very impressed with the new Split #Braille Feature in #JAWS. Being able to read Teams chat with half my display whilst typing someplace else is tremendous. They seem to have well thought out the different modes and views. Shame about the cells wasted with the split and lack of customisability of the viewport widths. If I won the lottery I'd throw a few hundred k at #NVDASR for comparable #BrailleDisplay development

@cublanco oh yeah, the webpage customization features are terrific. (I also haven't quite figured out on all my sites why certain regions are considered a "glance" area, but the method JAWS has for identifying those I would welcome in NVDA too.) It's those slight pamperings that do add up in time you spend doing it manually

Another Zapatista song.
These #rebels want to build "A world with room for many worlds" and I love this idea of a non totalitarian ideology where different communities are free to find their own way of organising.

A world where many worlds coexist.

That's one of my favourite groups, they have such cool songs and lyrics.

There's a pretty eclectic album called EZLN, el fuego y la palabra, that has an anthology of songs on the movement. You may already know of it, but in case you don't, unanotaquecae02.blogspot.com/2…
