Looks like Matrix was able to restore from a snapshot and didn't need to use a dump/restore method, so they've escaped certain death this time.

Now let's see if they learn their lesson and do something about their db corruption / storage failures issues they claim keeps happening
RT: friedcheese.us/objects/91f3c6b…

Oh a mysterious "slow burn" of Postgres corruption? Where is the engagement on the Postgres mailing lists? I haven't seen a single thread about this issue on the pgsql-general or pgsql-hackers lists.

It's either a hardware storage bug, a raid implementation bug, a kernel bug, or their Postgres/filesystem tuning is trading data reliability for performance. But they're not sharing anything of value.

Postgres doesn't just corrupt itself. We have several DBs > 100TB at $work. Many people have significantly larger databases...

I kinda doubt their recovery times too. They will probably forget that they need to disable indexes to make the restore have a reasonable speed. And pg_restore is single threaded per table. 1.5TB can take 1.5 days.

I think they're fucked. I wonder if they will be able to recover without it taking months, literally. They haven't indicated they're using anything but vanilla Postgres.

This could be the end of the matrix.org homeserver.

just wow. read this, from Techdirt:

Wired, Business Insider Editors Duped By Completely Bogus ‘AI’ Using ‘Journalist’ Who Made Up Towns, People That Don’t Exist

techdirt.com/2025/09/02/wired-…

Here's Wired's mea culpa:

wired.com/story/how-wired-got-…

Techdirt's Karl Bode correctly concludes: "This country has taken an absolute hatchet to quality journalism, which in turn has done irreparable harm to any effort to reach reality-based consensus or have an informed electorate. The rushed integration of “AI,” usually by media owners who largely only see it as a way to cut corners and undermine labor, certainly isn’t helping. Add in the twisted financial incentives of an ad-based engagement infotainment economy, and you get exactly the sort of journalistic outcomes academics long predicted."

Shit happens! No one should be judged.

But, can one do better?

Maybe there could be a better user guiding for new registrations in #Matrix #Apps (#Element, #ElementX) to give a better choise for #Homeservers instead to lead people always to matrix.org.

FYI the TFWP that the Harper government expanded to bring in more than 500,000 LOW-SKILLED workers btwn 2006 and 2014 to be exploited by employers in the restaurant and retail industries, in addition to the agriculture industry, etc.?

Remember the Harper government that Pierre Poilievre propped up for a decade?

Today I went to a customer site.

Rocked up, no one about apart from a dog who came out to greet me.

Played with the dog for a few minutes.

Did what I was there to do and packed up.

The dog - Ziggy, according to the name tag - re-appeared with a tennis ball in his mouth.

So I played with Ziggy for a few more minutes.

Sadly, I then had to move on to my next appointment.

This was by far my favourite thing that happened today.

# Mixxx 2.5.3 Released!

## Back to School, back to DVS.

We're proud to announce a new stable release of Mixxx: version 2.5.3, this version not only contains updates and fixes for some issues reported by users, but it also contains improvements to the Digital Vinyl System (DVS) support. These improvements are the result of some bright new insights of developers spinning the wheel instead of sunbathing.

Have a nice Mixxx.

Hello everyone. We have a special treat for you: a new blogpost that is a audiovisual whirlwind tour through a neglected era of music technology. It's easily the longest, but also the best-researched and most fun thing we've ever written: hikari.noyu.me/blog/2025-08-24…

I keep reading that the “right way” to use AI for coding is to treat it like a team of junior developers.

Wow, every developer’s dream: writing less code, managing more people, and reviewing lots of poorly written code. And with the added bonus that the “junior devs” you are pouring all this time into, will never improve as a result of your efforts.

As a nuclear engineer, I have never been asked to show my portfolio of reactor designs I maintain in my free time, I have never been asked to derive the six-factor formula, the quantization of angular momentum, Brehmsstrahlung, or to whiteboard gas centrifuge isotopic separation, water hammer, hydrogen detonation, or cross-section resonance integrals.

There's something deeply wrong with an industry that presumes you're a fraud unless repeatedly and performatively demonstrated otherwise and treats the hiring process as a demented form of 80s-era fraternity hazing.

@drathir , probably I will never understand the women who need to lead such notes. I mean any notes for their m cycle. Because it is natural, intuitive, even easy. In 95% and even more the lady can feel and trust her body. It’s not like flush.. it takes time with regular and very precise warnings.

Pity that so many people can’t read or sense these body signals. Because they happen a day or even several days before.

It’s interesting that `git exclude` seems to be a relatively unknown feature.

(Then again, there is so much to git.)

It is so handy for personal and temporary files.

I use it for justfiles in other people’s projects, for example.

I also use it for a personal Django management command where I can run random code from.

Since my git blame config breaks if I don’t have `.git-blame-ignore-revs` in a repo, I also make that file if needed.

Check out git exclude if you haven’t yet!
