My thoughts are with everyone battling or affected by the bushfires and power outages on this 43°C day. I’m very thankful my air conditioning is still working and I’m relatively comfortable. If you’re the praying type, please pray for my daughter’s safe return from Sydney tomorrow. The fires are still active, and she may need to find an alternative route home to Melbourne.

As I sit here listening to the coffee percolating it occurs to me that it’s already 2026 in #Australia and other places across the International Date Line. Happy #NewYear to everyone no matter where you are. May 2026 be a better year than 2025, which in many ways isn’t really a high bar to get over.

"Benzion Shemtov, #rabbi at #Chabad #Jewish Center at #Michigan State #University was out of the state when someone spray-painted #Nazi symbols on the doors and threw rocks at the windows of the center in the days following the #massacre at #BondiBeach in #Australia, where 15 people were #killed during a #Hanukkah celebration.

But when Shemtov returned to #EastLansing, he said he was greeted by numerous letters from the #MichiganState University community that the center serves.

“I got home and I got letters in the mail from people that are not even Jewish, just writing letters of support. It’s break right now. There’s no one in town…. just to see from #students that graduated and maybe came to us, students [that weren’t] necessarily so close with [us] perhaps because maybe they didn’t attend that much, but they were writing, this is their home, this was their home on campus,” Shemtov said. “This will always be their home.”

"#Jews comprise 0.2% of the world’s population.

Take a group of 500 random people, and on average, 499 won’t be #Jewish.

So you may be wondering what it’s like to be part of that 0.2%.

Here’s a little snapshot:

In May, Jews gathered at a museum reception in #WashingtonDC. A #gunman started #shooting. Two attendees were #killed.

In June, Jews gathered at a park in #Boulder, #Colorado. An assailant threw #Molotovcocktails into the crowd. A woman was killed.

In October, Jews gathered at a #synagogue in #Manchester, #England. A man drove his car into pedestrians and #stabbed them. Two people were killed.

In December, Jews gathered on a beach in #Sydney, #Australia. #Terrorists opened fire. Fifteen people were killed.

That’s just in 2025.

Bottom line: being Jewish is dangerous."

Another take that I have seen way too much, in response to this and other violent attacks against Jews, is almost too awful for me to summarize. It is the idea that the attack could be justified if the victims were all “Zionists.”All these people, sitting with their phones or computers, fantasizing over which Jews they will spare in the selection, and which of us they will slaughter. They most likely have “anti-fascist” in their bio, but they are Nazis in their souls, salivating over Nazi daydreams as their hobby.

🚨 World's first social media ban begins: Australian & under‑16? Your social media account is now locked. 🚨

What's next? From Dec 27 #AgeVerification checks for search engines like #Google.

BUT - Once your data is in the system, what's stopping it from being used for surveillance?

And what happened to #Privacy? 🧐

YouTube already has it ➡️ tuta.com/blog/how-to-turn-off-…

Age verification is the new trend to de-anonymize the web. 😡

🚨Starting Dec 10, #YouTube #Australia will ask for your age.

The Big Tech already started rolling out an AI-powered age estimation system. Adults are being marked as minors & are forced to submit IDs before regaining full access to decades-old accounts.

The City of Moreton Bay claims homeless people “consented” to having their tents and belongings – including a woman’s daughter’s ashes – thrown in the bin. This is what passes for policy now?
We’re criminalising poverty, bulldozing dignity, and calling it governance. Fines over $8,000 for sleeping rough, yet zero accountability for systemic failure.
If this is the norm, we’re in deep moral decline.

The only #pink #mantaRay we've discovered in the world, now or ever

Researchers have studied him (yes, a he) as to cause

Diet: no. Stress: no. Toxins: no. Infection: no

They now think it is just a rare genetic mutation

Interesting to read about this new adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Although... am I the only one who remembers ABC radio's Doctor Who parody 'Doctor Poo', and his epic adventure involving 20,000 *Legs* Under the Sea? (It was piloted by the evil Captain Kneemoss - so called because he had moss on his knees).

Just me?

So. thought I'd pen some thoughts here... no, not about birdsite, but about a cool youtube channel I discovered a couple of years ago, The Radio Vault. Its a youtube channel dedicated to #preservation of mostly New Zealand and Australian radio. They recently announced that they've been hard at work, digitizing over 750 #VHS #tapes, and over 1500 #cassettes. Wow! I can't even begin to imagine what 1500 cassettes would look like! I had about 100 when I was younger, but 1500? *head explodes*. Here's the link. youtube.com/channel/UClKbJxBkh… #Australia #NZ #Radio

A lot of countries employ voting templates to allow blind votees to cast a ballot in local or state elections. It's the same in Poland and in my experience it has been pretty much prone to mistakes such as the ballot paper slipping a fraction underneath the template. This is why I was happy to learn that Australia and New Zealand employed the "voting by phone" system. Blind citizens of these countries are one of the groups elligible to vote by phone. In order to do that, one calls the central voting committee to register, is assigned unique credentials that allow the person taking the vote to identify the elligibility in an anonymous way. On the day of voting, the elligible person calls another number where only the previously agreed credentials are taken from them, the ballot paper is read and the vote is cast by telling the committee representative. Sounds simple and flawless but perhaps there are some security flaws I am not aware of that made it not a more globally adopted solution. Thoughts?
