I read the latest #Apple event news with extreme, well, just boredom. Partially because I kept thinking, where's the small phone? I don't need a giant screen. Give me a small phone, a phone that will actually fit in my tiny pocket. I'm blind. I don't need a large screen. I am somewhat excited for the update today though. I might just send in my old SE for a battery replacement and a possible screen repair and call it another 5 years.

Evaluating EU based email services, and everyone seems to flaws. @startmail has no calendar, @soverin has no ability to try it without fully committing your domain, @mailbox_org gives an error when I try and register, and has no support contact for non customers, @posteo.de doesn’t allow you to use your own domain, and of course @Tutanota is locked in e2ee service meaning I am forced to use their app (same with Proton).

I'm a bit frustrated at the moment. I printed out the whole documentation and stapled everything together with dividers to form a clearly organized documentation folder. But already a couple of weeks thereafter the new version came. And then the next one. My folder seems to be useless. 😞
@Irisfreundin It's certainly not useless – 99% of the content will still be relevant to the current versions of LibreOffice! We can't stop volunteers updating the guidebooks, but we don't randomly remove big features so the content of the older guidebooks will still definitely be useful to you. Enjoy 😊
Vernünftige #ActivityPub Integration für media.ccc.de wäre doch auch mal was. Es wäre ziemlich cool wenn es sich im Grunde wie ein #PeerTube verhalten würde, so das man einzelnen Channels (Veranstaltungen) oder der ganzen Plattform folgen kann und einzelne Videos direkt boosten kann. Von der Architektur her macht es wahrscheinlich keinen Sinn auf #PeerTube zu wechseln. Aber das Interface zum Fediverse zu emulieren wäre cool.

@tunda Bei PeerTube ist die URL des Videos ein Post mit dem ich interagieren kann. Ich kann die URL in mein Mastodon kippen und sie liken, boosten, quote boosten und ggf kommentieren. Das geht ohne das ich vom @c3voc_releases überhaupt weiß. Die URL wird eine resource die alle unabhängig voneinander referenzieren können und alle wissen das wir vom gleichen Video reden.
Der Release Bot ist nur ein RSS Feed im Fediverse.
Außerdem wäre das Interface schöner. Bessere tags, keine Youtube links.

I'd assumed that "kodsnack" was a reference to coders who snack on cod. This seemed like it could be a Euro thing. But I see that in English it's about snacking on code. I like to do that. But it begs the question, if there are cod that code, is it about snacking on the cod or the cod snacking on the code?

@bycx Nějaký chatbot nad různými modely. Mrkl jsem zběžně na privacy policy a tedy nic moc, sídlí někde v Turecku... Nejzajímavější na tom bylo, že si švagrová opravdu myslela, že používá ChatGPT. Dnes už si to neplatí a nemá o to zájem. Chtěla s tím vytvářet materiály na další školní rok (učí na střední zdravce), ale zkušenost prý špatná.
@bycx Podle mě jsme v kulminaci schopností, ke kterým se dostanou běžní lidi. Vytvořili výborné modely, ale jsou příliš drahé na to, aby za ně běžní lidi platili. U modulů pro ně tak podle mě začne fáze enshittifikace. To už jde vidět na GPT-5, které většinu dotazů odbavuje levnými a horšími modely a oproti 4o to je pro hromadu lidí downgrade. Ona s tím pracovala tyto prázdniny. Dívám se, že na chatbot.app je výchozí právě GPT-5, takže zkušenost asi měla s ním.
@bycx Já se musím přiznat, že v poslední době mám zkušenost s ChatGPT spíš povrchní. Jedu téměř výhradně Perplexity, které mi na to vyhledávání a doptávání přijde nejlepší a mám tam Pro přes Revolut zdarma. A občas to doplním Mistralem. V práci pak Gemini a Claude, ale to vyloženě na technické věci.

Hej! Wielkie dzięki za tworzenie dostępnych aplikacji. Często gramy ze znajomymi w zaadoptowane pod osoby niewidome Scrabble i aplikacja przyda się do zliczania punktów. Odkryłem też Twoją inną appkę - Moons. Właśnie szukałem czegoś do lepszej kontroli ewidencji czasu pracy i nawet parę dni temu pisałem tu o Timery. Współpracuje z Toggl i jest fajnie dostępne, ale poza aplikacją z Toggl i tak nie korzystam i w zasadzie szukałem rozwiązania działającego lokalnie także raz jeszcze wielkie dzięki.
@Piciok Hej, Paweł. Bardzo się cieszę i dzięki wielkie za tę wiadomość. To dla mnie dodatkowa motywacja do pracy 😀 Jeśli masz jakieś uwagi odnośnie moich aplikacji, pisz śmiało tu lub na maila (kontakt w aplikacji). VoiceOver w Skoro działa chyba bardzo dobrze, w Moons muszę trochę rzeczy poprawić.
Miałbym na ten moment dwie sugestie odnośnie dostępności Moons: 1. Czy dałoby się ukryć logo aplikacji tak, by VoiceOver go nie fokusował? W aplikacjach to raczej element dekoracyjny i dodaje dodatkowe przystanki podczas nawigacji gestami lewo - prawo. 2. Czy można by złączyć tytuł bieżącego zadania, nazwę projektu oraz biegnący licznik w jeden element dla VO? Opcja "Stop" mogłaby wtedy stać się czynnością na pokrętle, a dwukrotne stuknięcie po prostu otwierałoby zadanie.
@Piciok 1. Zdecydowanie. Żaden problem. 2. Chyba tak. To znaczy na pewno się da, ale muszę potestować, żeby było dobrze. Dodaję te rzeczy do listy zadań. Jeśli masz dodatkowe uwagi dotyczące moich aplikacji, pisz śmiało. Mam też aplikacje do wydatków, wyznaczania celów oraz dzienniczek nastroju. VoiceOver w nich wymaga usprawnień. Zawsze słucham uwag użytkowników, więc pisz śmiało.
Jeszcze jedna rzecz, która podoba mi się w Timery: praktycznie całą aplikację można obsługiwać za pomocą skrótów: tworzenie projektów i wpisów czasu, uruchamianie liczników itp. W zasadzie nie muszę otwierać aplikacji przez większość czasu. Skróty poprzypisywałem do gestów VoiceOver i szybko mogę zacząć śledzenie aktywności. Jest też aktywność na żywo "live activity" pokazująca aktualnie uruchomiony licznik. Fajne to.
@Piciok Masz na myśli aplikację Skróty w iOS? Tak, tego Moons wciąż nie obsługuje niestety. Jest to na mojej liście rzeczy do zrobienia. Tak sam jak live activities i widgety. Pracuję również nad wersją natywną na Maca. Obecnie działa tam tylko wersja z iPada.

The app still misuses push notifications to send detailed device analytics about the device (uptime, battery, volume, locale, timezone, memory, CPU, etc.)

#A11Y #BlindTech I’m a user of whatifsports.com, specifically its simleague baseball feature. For some unknown reason, the website has stopped working regularly over the past week or so. Combo boxes fail to appear, although I see they are there if I use the JAWS cursor. In some other instances, whole parts of the website don’t present at all. Even more strangely, this behavior happens on both #Chrome and #Firefox but I can still access everything on #Edge just fine. I’m tempted to install #NVDA to see how things perform with it, but I’ve never used it so I suspect there’s a learning curve. I’m just flummoxed as to why the website has started acting like this.

I was asked yesterday if I could remove the background distractions from this photo. The gallery app on my phone did a really good job. It made the driveway look wider than it is, though.

I have an idea for immutable desktop-focused Linux distro/OS projects, like the various immutable versions of Fedora. The OS consists of multiple root filesystem layers (like the layers in an OCI container image): an irreducible core, plus layers for drivers, localization packs, assistive technologies, and desktop environments. The user selects the layers they want, and can change that selection by editing a file, copying layers to their boot media if needed, and rebooting. 1/?
The OS layers are loaded into RAM on boot. That means the individual layers need to be minimal enough and fine-grained enough that the user can load just what they want. Once the layers are loaded, the boot media isn't needed for the system to keep running. Then for applications, when a Flatpak-packaged app is launched, the necessary Flatpaks are loaded into RAM, and kept resident while the app is running. This part is handwavy because I don't know enough about Flatpak. 2/?
The point is that on a machine with only one SD card slot, the system can boot from SD card, then the user can swap cards if needed, like we did with floppies on early personal computers. 3/3
As I think about it, though, I think current desktop environments might be too tied to the single OS installation on fixed storage, with /etc and $HOME always available, to allow persistent storage to be swapped while the system is running like we did on early personal computers. But the Macintosh was a GUI desktop environment that originally booted from floppy and then let you swap the floppy, so I guess it could be made to work again.
The reasons people had to swap floppies was because of the limitations of storage. They were so small that you couldn't really fit much useful software on them.
The operating systems also didn't do multitasking, so it really didn't matter if the backing data for any app disappeared when you swapped programs because they couldn't coexist anyway
Storage is still effectively infinitely larger than the RAM in your machine too. So you're just gonna run out quickly
@AdrianVovk Fair points. I guess what I was thinking was one should be able to copy stuff from one SD card to another, and especially to set up a new bootable SD card, on a computer with only one SD slot. Though depending on the availability of USB ports or a uSB hub, one could attach a USB SD card reader.
@AdrianVovk The thing I've been obsessed with lately is the idea of personal computers booting solely from removable media, RPi-style, with no internal/fixed persistent storage. As much as I disliked swapping floppies when I was a kid, on my family's Apple IIGS with no hard drive, I also didn't have to worry about wrecking the family computer; I could do whatever I wanted on the floppies that I used for playing around, as long as I didn't touch the ones with important software or data.
