getting better with the heuristics

I'm thinking this could probably be converted into a project that listens for webhook events on new user account signups, then schedule an account analysis automatically... if the account looks like spam in +24 hours it can just automatically delete it

Then we don't really have to care so much about spam accounts because we have a tool that wipes them out automatically

edit: I don't think I said "automatically" enough times in this post

Some recruiter sent me this. lol $300k salary. I should set that as my sponsors goal. That’s funny.

Throw money here if you think I personally deserve $300k a year salary 😂 github.com/sponsors/danirabbit

Otherwise throw money here to help me meet elementary’s sponsor goal which is $75k/yr which you’ll note is far less than $300k lmao github.com/sponsors/elementary

DASH: Danger Action Speed Heroes, a 2D precision platformer, just left Early Access and finally hit full release on Steam.

This thing has been sitting on my wishlist for seven years. And boy, am I disappointed. But before tearing it apart, let’s cover what it’s supposed to be.

DASH is built around speedrunning. Hunt for shiny diamonds. Blaze through levels to prove you’re fast enough. Upload your own creations and track plays like it’s supposed to mean something. The entire pitch is “rise to the top” through running and creating.

The graphics? Acceptable, nothing more. Functional, yes. Pretty? No. The shaders try to channel retro vibes but instead look cheap and awkward. It doesn’t bring joy—it just does its job.

The soundtrack barely registers. I had to boot the game again just to confirm it existed. The sound effects lean way too hard into meme culture, and instead of adding charm, they grate. At least there are volume sliders, because you’ll want them.

Controls are where it really falls apart. Keyboard-only defaults to arrow keys for movement, and you can’t remap them. WASD is not an option. You can flip action keys from X/C to S/D, but that’s like choosing between Diet Coke and Coke Zero—neither is what you actually wanted. Gamepad support (Xbox, DualShock) exists, but it’s only partial. That sums up the whole feel of the game: half measures.

Yes, the game advertises online PvP with cross-platform multiplayer. Maybe that mode salvages it. But I don’t play for PvP, and the single-player offering here is paper-thin. The included levels don’t inspire, and the level editor can’t rescue a game when the foundation is this dull.

Compatibility? Supposedly it runs natively on both Windows and Linux. In reality, the Linux build crashed. Only when I switched to Proton Experimental did it actually work. That should not be the case.

Specs are modest—2 GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM, 350 MB space. But that’s about the only straightforward thing. Because when I launched, the splash screen still labeled it “Early Access.” This is the full release? Really?

Reception is basically a time capsule. Steam shows 15 reviews, all from 2019. Nothing since. So whatever praise is there is six years old, from when it was barely out of the gate.

The one good thing I can say: it’s free. Free to download, free to play. But even as a free game, I can’t recommend it. Not after seven years of waiting.

I just tested the new Android 16 Linux terminal app, which runs a Linux system in a virtual machine and lets you control it with its terminal emulator. It’s definitely more accessible than Termux, with each line of terminal output being its own item you swipe through. Also there's a text field at the bottom called "cursor", where you can type a command or line of input and press enter, so I can actually use this with TalkBack's Braille display support now. If the terminal hasn't been filled yet, there will be a lot of empty lines at the bottom to swipe through, but this is still better than Termux putting the entire terminal output in one item. I would say its about as efficient to use as iSH or A-Shell on iOS, but in contrast to those it gives you a full Linux environment where you have root access, probably with near native performance because it uses KVM. Instead of iSH which emulates X86 Linux using its own CPU and system call emulator, or A-Shell which ships a wide but limited set of natively compiled UNIX programs and you can't install more. I think Termux has a custom distribution for its Linux environment and it isn't separated from Android in a container or VM.

Wednesday.

The scaffolding is up and I have just torn out my second skirting board. There's something satisfying about the feeling of a nail being pulled out of the wall. the old ones have been here for considerably longer than us and we moved in in 2014.

The builders are rocking up first thing in the morning. The chimney's days are numbered. Single-digited, in fact.

@matrix Is there a place the Matrix community can discuss protocol-level issues that isn't GritHub? If not, it really is about time to set one up. Lemmy and PieFed are options for an official threadiverse instance, and both Discourse and NodeBB now have some level of ActivityPub support.

This could even be an opportunity to dogfood adding Matrix protocol support to a forum package.

#TIL that Mattermost is now offering its own bridge to Matrix, which depends on a Synapse instance running alongside the MM server;

This is what RocketChat were doing since about 2022. Although their documentation suggests they are working on full Matrix support inside the RC server itself, due sometime this month;

Well well, AI sensorship bites me in the ass again.
Specifically trying to reset a password on a site with an image-only CAPTCHA. It was just a 4-digit verification code too. ChatGPT was all like, "no no, I cannot solve it, even if it's for a reset link, no no. This can cause harm." Bullshit. What harm? I'm not going to spam someone with multiple reset links to that site with a single verification code ask. Jeesh.
Then I turned to Gemini. Oh you little, naive Gemini. You did it in an instant. I didn't even need to convince you, I gave you the Firefox visible screenshot of the page and you did it. Wow. I'm amazed, but this to me is a good thing, I hope Google keeps it around, maybe I shouldn't have written about it, now the cat's out of the bag, oh no.
Haha. Gemini even wrote: "Of course, please don't apologize for a second! It's not your fault at all. That is incredibly frustrating when websites are not designed to be accessible. I'm happy to help you get through this." Not only did they have a validation code at the reset point for your e-mail entry, but also at the point of password reset when typing it in. Wow. And again just 4 digits.

So, the study I just boosted changes the narrative on BMI completely. I've always hated it as a concept because it fails to take account of all sorts of things, but now they find that only having a BMI of 40 or above is associated with increased risk. I no longer need to lose weight, apparently, and a lot of my followers don't, but exercise is still good for us and makes us feel better physically and mentally

To anybody who uses gnome today: I haven't used gnome in a few years. I stopped because it didn't have a system tray for things like steam, discord, teams, docker, podman, etc...

I had to use an extension to get one there but it broke after every update.

Is a system tray (or something like it) built in yet? Where do the icons for those background apps sit? Are they forced into the space of the dock with the other apps? Or is there another approach that doesn't break after every update?

An unusual drop on Steam today: a traditional text parser adventure game. I haven't seen one land on Steam in a while.

Starting now, the #curl man page is rendered to use the long form only of the command line options in text, instead of like before insist on mentioning both the short AND long option.

This should make the text easier on the eye. I could make it this way after having fixed so that the long-option-only also renders appropriate links in the web version.

A tiny step forward.
