Modern GNOME's settings, everybody!
Want to adjust the sensitivity of the automatic backlight controls? Hope you like editing C code.
(The code has changed since that answer was written, but only by renaming the # defines you have to edit.)
How can I adjust the automatic brightness algorithm/granularity/polling rate so that it's less obvious and jumpy?
I love that I can now take advantage of the ambient light sensor on my Surface Pro 3, and use Automatic Brightness like I'm used to on my phone. It's now built-in (to GNOME at least) under the Auto...Ask Ubuntu

But you know how it goes. Initial implementation; functional but uncomfortable. Find someone who knows what sort of low-pass filter to use. Find the correct speed at which to do it. Find out that you shouldn't poll for that shit if you want to conserve power.
("just let the user change the magic constants" is not good UX, either.)
