Making websites smaller has tangible effects on the environment.

“Shaving off a single kilobyte in a file that is being loaded on 2 million websites reduces CO2 emissions by an estimated 2950 kg per month.“

(thoughts welcome; the post is from 2020, are these reasonable assumptions today?)

#Catima 2.34.5 is out!

This is a maintenance release that targets Android 15 and fixes a crash.

The app will look slightly uglier on some devices, due to Google's changes in how drawing over the system and navigation bar works. Sadly, supporting proper edge-to-edge requires extensive rewrites (help very welcome!), so I opted to at least ensure we target Android 15 before any deadlines.

Coming soon to an app store near you.

@sihaha Apps targeting older Android versions tend to work fine on newer ones due to how backwards compatibility works on Android, but targeting newer Android versions has 2 clear benefits:
1. Google has one reason less to kick you off Google Play
2. There are generally slight security improvements (small hardenings here and there)

The downside is that it can take a lot of work because Google tends to change a lot every Android version.

Glad to hear you have good experiences so far :)

I've been using Skype to talk with my parents since I moved to Canada, that's the tool they know and switching to something else for them is gonna be super hard.
Now Skype is forcing them to switch to Teams, a buggy and bloated tool made to be a gateway to sell services.
It's Microsoft, so I'm not surprised at all, but still, disappointing.

I'm in a similar situation but I'm going to try MyTello. You can set it up to dial a local number from the home phone to talk to someone with a number registered around the globe, or call via their app. I've only done one test call so far, but might be an option.

This week we did a working session in BOARC, Bidston Observatory, an amazing self-organised community center close to Liverpool, UK (with a radio station in the basement!).

We finalized and tested the first, experimental prototype of Toolkitty, an mobile and desktop app for collectives to share resources & spaces and organise events!

And we launched it's website! 🥳

New in GNOME 48 is the necessary support for keyboard handling by the Orca screen reader in Wayland sessions. As I reported on the Orca mailing list recently, I have updated my system, and this support is so far working as intended. You need Mutter 48 and the latest AT-SPI installed.

Thanks are owed to the software developers responsible for this work.

@Jason J.G. White Yes it's amazing @GNOME #a11y is moving into the right direction but I'm afraid it's at very slow pace.
Within Gnome 48 we do have reworked keyboard input handling.
Now we need mouse emulation
and in the future we'd like to have touch screen gestures and related screen reader features.
The interaction between gnome developers and screen reader users is one direction only.
New features are being added, some bugs which we can tolerate are introduced along the way and we do need to wait at least some 6 months until these are addressed at a platform level in an upcoming release.

exercise, soliciting advice

on days when i have no time, I prioritize push-ups for upper body with arm/chest focus or squats for lower body with quad focus.

What is a good single upper body exercise for maximum back engagement that requires only dumbbells or bands? I’m currently partial to renegade rows or wide-grip push-ups.

Edit: for context, here are my current workouts: seirdy.one/about/workouts/#leg…

in reply to Jakub Cabal [OLD]

@WoundClad @stooovie Getting it for free? Certainly not with the amount of data they have.
I didn't mean Nextcloud installations on their premise. I do it for myself, but I don't think it's good every one, actually it isn't for most. By "setting up a Nextcloud service" I mean picking something like Hetzner Storage Share and setting it up the way it works for them like the old solution.

The combination of two audio files might be problematic in general. Actually it's not possible over here to upload more than one video or audio and the replay of any of the two files displayed with timer might not work.

Getting started with XMPP/Jabber and PGP for federated, encrypted messaging

This is a short thread where I explain how I started using the XMPP protocol and PGP encryption for secure messaging. I am not a security expert, but I am a mathematician and I am confortable with the Linux command line. This guide is for people who want to use PGP for secure messaging easily. You will need to be okay with typing commands into the Linux command line in order to do this, but I will tell you exactly what to enter.

Part 1: XMPP

Mastodon is like email, but for social media. You sign up for an account with a server, and then you can talk with any other accounts that are signed up on other servers, as long as your servers are getting along. (No one wants emails from the sketchy spam server, and we want to be able to choose between Yahoo, Gmail, etc.) XMPP (a.k.a. Jabber) is the same thing for text messaging.

Just like signing up for an email/Mastodon account, you need to sign up for an account. You can find a list of servers at list.jabber.at/ and will probably at least need to provide an email addess when making an account.

Once you have made an account, you need a client. On Linux, I've been having a good time using Dino (dino.im/). You can then enter your account name and password to log into your XMPP account and start chatting! There are both public rooms and you can also message directly with your friends.
