Just listened to this solid episode of the Statecraft podcast: How to Digitize the Government. I had the chance to meet Joel Burke in #Estonia at the e-Governance conference earlier this year.

I had the chance to meet Joel in Estonia at the e-Governance Conference earlier this year. Our conversation there echoed many of the themes in this episode.

Well worth a listen if you’re serious about modernizing public services.

Inspired by a recent podcast, I read this article on digital minimalism. Interestingly, I think I'm already much of the way there: very little interaction with corporate social media, no difficulty leaving the phone at home when going to a concert, for example, no desire to use technology when I'm meeting people or at a conference - even a technology conference.
I'm reasonably selective about what podcasts or radio to listen to, what fora to engage in, what to read online, etc., although there are probably some that I could remove without loss of substantial value.
I prioritize creation over consumption in general.

I come from a business / digital background, so digital accessibility has always been big on my radar. When I started in science a few years back, I was very surprised to see that arXiv - a service that allows scientists to put their pre-prints (papers before peer review) was not accessible.

This meant that all science papers that were open access (away from journal subscriptions) were only available as PDFs - which means people with digital accessibility needs could not access them.

Access to science should be open to everyone (the pandemic showed us how important this is), and whilst there is a need for papers to undergo the formal peer-review process, that does not mean we can't adhere to global digital accessibility standards.

So, I am extremely glad to see that arXiv is now moving toward digital accessibility, with its second accessibility forum in Sept. 2024. They've also been moving to make papers in HTML format (instead of PDFs only) which adheres to these standards.

If you are interested in accessibility and science, you might consider attending this forum. It's free to all and only requires remote participation.

May get even more impossible if #America keeps trying to become #Iran 2.0 especially in terms of #digital rights: Having a secure smartphone gets in the way since thought control is hard, how can we "fight crime" if people are able to think and communicate so freely?!

Also difficult to purchase one in #Europe at least my side of it. Not because of laws thankfully, but because devices like #Librem #Purism #PinePhone aren't readily sold in stores here even online which sucks horribly.

Between the #copyright fascists, the stop #terrorism fascists, the everyone I don't like is a #nazi fascists, the think of the children fascists, and the stop disagreeing about #COVID fascists... yeah I'm having a hard time deciding what to pick for my #digital life, I'm mentally pretty poor so I'm carefully deciding which pretext I should buy to terrorize myself under 🤔
