🚨 Another EU mass surveillance attempt. Will kill privacy on web. Must not pass. 🚨

“[A]ll web browsers distributed in Europe will be required to trust the certificate authorities and cryptographic keys selected by EU governments.

These changes radically expand the capability of EU governments to surveil their citizens by ensuring cryptographic keys under government control can be used to intercept encrypted web traffic across the EU.”

The EU bans Meta's use of personal data for behavioural advertising.

The European Data Protection Board said Wednesday it had adopted a binding decision that will ban Facebook and Instagram owner Meta from using the personal data of users for targeted advertisements.

Earlier this year Norway imposed a ban on sending Facebook and Instagram users targeted advertisements based on their personal data.

european-pirateparty.eu/histor… while I always believed that "Chat Control" as it was proposed would be dead on arrival, and unenforceable, it's always great to see common sense prevail. Some win for #privacy and #security of communications. The fight is far from over though.

@Tutanota is there a way left to connect to tutanota over Tor?
New wasm frontend made Tor browser incompatible because WASM, and the desktop app does not have proxy settings and is not handled by torsocks properly.

📢 The EU Parliament will not be moving forward with chat control! The indiscriminate mass surveillance measures have been removed and secure end-to-end encryption will not be compromised! 🥳

New-ish Asus routers seem to enable "Yandex.DNS" by default. This forwards all of your DNS lookups to Yandex, a large Russian search engine. I discovered this on my dad's router when he had troubles accessing his bank from his broadband but not on his phone. (Presumably, the bank geoblocked Russian IPs as a protest to the invasion of Ukraine.)

I get that you need to trust someone with your DNS lookups (your ISP, Google, Cloudfare, etc), but I didn't expect the non-ISP option to be the default...

Check your router!

#LibreOffice posted an article titled "WE WANT TO USE OUR USERS PERSONAL DATA" at design.blog.documentfoundation…

LibreOffice was promoting a data collaboration with a company called polypoly. That article appears to contradict this post.

In the last entry in the comments section of the article the author states the project is on hold.

@libreoffice, what is the status of this project with polypoly? Is it still on hold or has it been cancelled?

The #CSAM clusterfuck just became even more shitty:

Dutch researcher Danny Mekić has looked at #advertising data from #Twitter & says that the @EU_Commission's #DGHome has used #SurveillanceAds based on prohibited data categories to target people with #disinformation about the #ChatControl proposal.

#YlvaJohansson's department specifically targeted people in member states that had been critical of her proposal but excluded people who are likely to value #privacy.

The "New Outlook" demands that when adding your #Gmail account, you also give Microsoft a copy of all your Gmail email, contacts, and calendar data.

The "Learn More" link confirms:

"Syncing your account to the Microsoft Cloud means that a copy of your email, calendar, and contacts will be synchronized between your email provider and Microsoft data centers."

WOW.

Good time to switch to @thunderbird, folks!

We all dream of a better future.

#Privacy must be part of it! 🔒

We're happy that #Apple has now joined the fight for encryption! 🔒

There is no magic key that allows the police to scan all chat messages, emails, and more for harmful content while not risking the security and privacy of everyone. This is technically not possible.

The more agree to this fact, the higher the chances that legislation is altered to protect everybody's privacy.

Today, two open letters from academics on the scientific arguments against the current #CSS (client side scanning) initiatives have been released:

* The first (in English, internationally coordinated) one is online at tinyurl.com/CSAScientistsLette… and still open for additional signatures.

* The second (in German, by #Austrian academics) one is online at ins.jku.at/chatcontrol/ and explicitly includes law experts in addition to the arguments from a security, privacy, and AI perspective.

This debate is expected to gain new steam with #Spain taking over the EU council presidency, given recently leaked statements like "Ideally, in our view, it would be desirable to legislatively prevent EU-based service providers from implementing end-to-end encryption" (wired.co.uk/article/europe-bre…).

Please boost on any channels you deem adequate. The discussion is still open, and we have little time to bring it to a more rational level.

The combination of rapidly-improving technologies like GNOME, Flatpak, Wayland, and Portals also means our active privacy protections are also better than ever before.

I went on to write:

>If and when we are able to develop an open, peer reviewed, industry-respected method of responsible and privacy-first telemetry, we may consider doing so.

While that post was in the context of elementary OS, I believe every word I wrote.

I’ve spent a long, long time thinking about ethical software, the challenges we *necessarily* give ourselves compared to closed competitors, and crucially, how to overcome those challenges.

Four and a half years ago, I wrote:

>respecting your privacy is the ethical thing to do; users have a fundamental right to the utmost privacy, even from companies and products they trust.

That’s as true as ever.

Taken from #Google's updated "privacy" policy.
I mean, I find it ironic because there doesn't seem to be any #privacy to speak of here 😆

I know this is no laughing matter, but I am at the "oh what the hell can I do so might as well laugh about it" stage 🤣
