We've had great feedback on our recent In-Process article on creating portable copies of NVDA. A lot of people use them for testing out beta's of new versions, particularly 2024.1. Have you been trying the 2024.1 betas, and do you use a portable version to do it? If you'd like to find out more, check out our article here: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-9…

Thanks for the heads up @Marek Macko. A while ago I had some patches that improved tab key navigation in the @Mixxx DJ Software preferences window. Perhaps I should revisit that and try to polish it for one of the upcoming releases. Making the main window and actuall mixxx controls accessible to the platform specific apis is beyond my skills I am afraid but I already have some experiments i.e. sending mixxx control states through the controller API and using virtual midi port to read it and pass it to screen reader for text to speech. On linux this is already working for me with orca.
Another approach I haven't yet tested but am just thinking of might be reusing platform specific notification channels such as interfacing directly with a screen readers on windows such as #nvdasr controler client and using announcement role on linux to generate voice prompts for the screen readrers. This might have a similar effect to the end user than the virtual midi port but will be built into mixxx it-self.
@Mixxx DJ Software have you also got some ideas related to this please?

The universe has cried and Kostyantin, the dev behind Whatsapp+ and Unigram+ NVDA addons, has delivered: Github-Release-Downloader, a NVDA addon that will happily download the latest release of any Github repo you throw at it. It's quite rudimentary at the moment i.e. we need to enter the URL manually, it can't handle multiple asset files etc. but I was just able to download some NVDA addons just fine. It's definitely a start.

If you like this one and would like to support the dev, all the info you need is at t.me/unigramplus. Thanks, Kostya, and greetings to Ukraine! #NVDASR #Accessibility #Blind

LLaVA-1.5 is an open-ish AI model which can provide image descriptions and allow follow-up interaction, akin to Be My AI. The best part is that you can run it locally on your computer if you have an appropriate GPU... or very, very slowly if you want to use your CPU. I thought it'd be cool to hook it up to #NVDASR so you can get image descriptions for the current navigator object and then ask follow-up questions. So, I wrote an NVDA add-on to do just that using llama.cpp. github.com/jcsteh/nvda-llamaCp…

Congratulations to Gene, recipient of this year's RNZFB Chair's Award. It is wonderful to see your hard work & advocacy over many years acknowledged with this prestigious award. Gene has long advocated for NVDA & been a great friend to us in New Zealand. We're excited to see him honoured.

"Access to a free, fast & efficient screen reader has changed my life. Because of its qualities, my computer never crashes; updates are frequent & the software works well. It follows best the evolution of Windows and all software. Updating is fast & easy, it is available in all languages. The provision of add-ons makes it really efficient” – Silvie, France

It’s been 5 months since Australian Story aired an episode on NV Access founders, Mick Curran & Jamie Teh. The first Australian Story episode to be audio described. It was an incredible opportunity to share with a wider audience the importance of NVDA & our overarching message, that everyone deserves equal access to technology.

You can still watch the Australian Story episode, with Audio Description, on YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=3i7gkN-1sA…

Is it just me, or is the interface for searching in #thunderbird really clunky with #NVDAsr? Seems like it takes a lot of steps just to view the list of results. I find myself resorting to iOS mail if I need to track down a message from a few days ago. Is it better with a different #Screenreader? #accessibility #a11y #Jaws #JFW

This week's In-Process is out! Featuring NVDA 2023.1, a feature on the new link destination reporting feature, an update on Windows 7 and 8 support, thanks to our wonderful community & handy ways to recover unsaved Word documents from Microsoft. Now at: nvaccess.org/post/in-process-6… #NVDA #NVAccess #NVDAsr #ScreenReader

I spent several hours over the last few days implementing WASAPI audio output for NVDA for some reason. As I suspected, I don't think it's really any more responsive, but I'm hoping it might eventually fix some tricky bugs with the old WinMM implementation, though it'll probably introduce a bunch of its own. Still quite some way to go before it's fully featured; e.g. it doesn't support any device other than the default yet, nor can it recover if a device disappears. #NVDASR

Are you sure it's a #windows thing? #NVDASR has an option called Use screen layout within its browse mode settings section. Perhaps toggling it will help with the Windows 10 computer as well. It's on by default meaning the virtual document content is displayed the way it's arranged on the screen rather than wrapped at link boundaries.

So since this does not seem to be widely disseminated knowledge, the RH Voice speech synthesizer engine allows for training your own voice models by associating sets of sentences in a text file with their corresponding recordings as wav files. There is a tutorial about this on the project's Wiki at:
github.com/RHVoice/RHVoice/wik….
I haven't tried it myself yet so can't answer possible questions, others have though so it surely works.
Happy hacking, creating SAPI, NVDA, Android voices or whatever else you imagine! ##SpeechSynthesis #Accessibility #NVDASR #Blind
