Goooooood morning, #MatrixConf! I hope everyone had a great night and got some good rest – or at least one of the two 😁
Looking forward to a great Day 1! Doors open at 9am, and opening remarks are at 10am.
Not here with us in Berlin? You're missed, but you don't have to miss out! Talks will be livestreamed: 2024.matrix.org/watch

So... #Signal and #Wire, which both have issues, but not #Matrix / #XMPP? And for video, 2 #YouTube front ends and a proprietary YouTube clone, but no direct mention of #Peertube? And for Translation, the proprietary #Deepl, but no mention of the local and #Privacy respecting #Firefox #translate
I appreciate the intent of this post, but the research is... outdated at best.
I have been shepherding a Matrix Spec Change that tries to choose easy-to-understand wording to explain Cryptographic concepts to non-technical users.
I think the first draft is ready! Comments and suggestions welcome.
We've fully enabled authenticated media on matrix.org! 🎉
Users may see errors downloading images and files from matrix.org users – please update your client/server, or visit the support room for the client/server/homeserver you use. #Matrix
Reminder: tomorrow September 4th we will fully enable authenticated media on matrix.org, and freeze unauthenticated media endpoints!
Users may see errors downloading images and files from matrix.org users – the solution is to update your client/server. If that doesn't do it, visit the support room for your client/server software, or the homeserver you reside on, for more information.
One thing I initially found confusing with @element / @matrix: How one would share and join a channel. The way you get bounced between instances for that. And in a way for @Mastodon, too.
People describe these services as "just like email". But I think the one thing that is missing for that would be a proper #URI scheme and integration in browsers for things you can join or follow in these federated networks. Email has its established "mailto:foo@example.com" for instance.

Have you considered putting the Matrix Conference videos up on conf.tube (a specialized #Peertube instance for conference videos)?
I have just released v0.0.10 of iamb! 🎉 Since its last version, the client has gained:
- A command to mark rooms as DMs, set per-room notification levels, and to mark all rooms read
- Message slash commands
- Support for managing room aliases, room history, and bans
- Bug fixes for window resizes, <C-W>o, saving/restoring more layout info, and more!
See github.com/ulyssa/iamb/release… for binaries and a list of changes, and iamb.chat/ for docs and install instructions.

About the authenticated media endpoints Matrix is using, I try to push a new release candidate of FluffyChat today which supports those and then release it as soon as possible.
So hopefully nothing will break 👍😁
For server devs: FluffyChat will also look into the `unstable_features` for the "org.matrix.msc3916.stable" key. This way you can implement it on the server without the full v1.11 feature set

Draupnir is now being supported with a grant from NLnet NGI Zero. I've written up a post with some context, and to describe the goals for the project marewolf.me/posts/draupnir/24-…
If you do have feedback or questions you can reach out to me here or in our matrix room matrix.to/#/#draupnir:matrix.o… (which is preferred).

What will the Foundation do to protect projects at the heart of Matrix? How do we determine what those “core” projects are? And are there any projects that don’t belong at the Foundation?
We're beginning the process of defining a new governance framework for Foundation projects, in collaboration with the Governing Board and the rest of the ecosystem. matrix.org/blog/2024/08/heart-…

I am disappointed that @matrix didn't publish any response to the Soatok post.
At least to provide some context about
- Why was an insecure crypto implementation knowingly chosen for libolm?
- Why was the fact that libolm is potentially insecure not clearly communicated?
- Why was the crypto implementation not replaced sooner?
- Why is the ecosystem so slow to start using the Rust rewrite?
- Does the foundation plan to do anything about that?
wurde nicht eingestellt.

I thought that Chats (GNOME Chatty) is an SMS app, but it actually supports Matrix and XMPP too. So I can join discussions on the postmarketOS Matrix server from postmarketOS devices. Cool.

@matrix I know you worked on encryption and key exchange in the latest iterations, but you made it worse.
That is freaking not usable. A new contact added by ID in 1to1 chat, "Never send encrypted messages to unverified sessions.." not activated. Just a brand new contact.
Not working at all. Trying to get users to #Matrix like that won't work.
It's not only old-style looking, heavy and non-intuitive, it's just not working at all.

Ralfs Matrix Migration
Aus Gründen musste ich den Matrix-Server wechseln. Hier lest ihr, wie es mir dabei ergangen ist.
Authenticated media rollout continues (v important for homeserver and client devs!), an MSC to demo extending user profiles, an explainer on message security in Matrix, The Matrix Conference announcements, and more happened last week in Matrix!

Yikes! Thanks for pointing that out. We've retracted the boost and boosted the original post you linked to.
We monitor the #Matrix hashtag to try to find news to reshare with the ecosystem, and will be wary of that particular outlet going forward.
