Oh what a terrible decision.
Canonical will prevent Ubuntu flavors to come with Flatpak preinstalled, as they want to push snaps.
Kind of a Microsoft-like move here. Really bad.

Ubuntu Flavors/Spins Will No Longer Be Able To Install Flatpak By Default
While Ubuntu Linux hasn't provided Flatpak support out-of-the-box due to their preference of using their own Snap app packaging/distribution format, Ubuntu flavors/spins have to this point been able to pre-install Flatpak support if they desiredwww.phoronix.com

matrix is a gold #4opens project but has 2 issues it's a defacto open "industrial" standard and it has semi opaque governance issues. Not big problems.
The issue is pushing #closedweb thinking into a #openweb project. Why do we need to add secure DM's to mastodon, exactly, and what would be added by this and what would be lost?
Let's look at an example, backups and security, currently on #mastodon and the whole #Fediverse the is an understanding that nothing is actually private (ok mastodon keeps telling white lies about this, i don't blame them) so we trust our admins not to spy, and we don't stress about the lossyness of it all.
Add the security of secret chat, and you add a whole another stress to running an instance. Why do we need to do this?
@eibhear Secure DMs mean that people can only run native clients, and that the web interface becomes useless for DMs. Most security people that I know of regard cryptography with JavaScript in the browser as a joke in poor taste.
If you want secure DMs then just use apps which have been designed for that purpose.
@Hamishcampbell Integration would be done client side for end to end encryption, by defining how to link identities between ActivityPub and Matrix.
Gained: privacy
Lost: ability to spy
That would be great. Already at #Socialcoop we use Matrix for operational discussions. It would be great to see the two services integrated more tightly.
At @medlab we also use Matrix and Mastodon together with integrated user management through @cloudron

LibreOffice is in the Google Summer of Code 2023! - The Document Foundation Blog
Everyone loves having shiny new features in LibreOffice. But how do we get them? Many are developed by volunteers and people in the ecosystem.Mike Saunders (The Document Foundation)
Thanks again for answering.
As for what "Google Summer of Code" actually is, for me it's quite clear that it is a very successful PR stunt on the part of Google.
The cost for Google is negligible, after all it's a trillion-dollar company.
The benefit for Google, on the other hand, is substantial: they get LibreOffice (and Debian, GNOME, KDE and others) saying essentially "Google is good", you are communicating that "Google is good" through your own channels.

Well, I'm making a podcast, in French, on how to integrate podcasts in public libraries (from curation to production).
I plan to release, in the next few days, a special episode on podcast apps. I'll talk about three Andoid apps, AntennaPod being of course one of them.
So, I'd be glad to make an update special episode when 3.0 release is out.

Years ago elementary was approached by Canonical to become an official Ubuntu flavor. “All” we had to do was offer Snap out of the box. We debated it—being able to offload some additional infrastructure concerns was attractive—but we realized it helped Canonical more than it helped us, and we had chosen Flatpak for all of its benefits as covered here:

As #Linux users, or even as #Windows users, we often hear a lot of preconceived notions, like "Linux is faster", or "Windows has better battery life".
Well, I decided to quantify all of it in a complete benchmark between Windows 11 and #ubuntu

I spent yesterday evening trying to see how to make apps that use #libadwaita (the latest UI for #GNOME), and walked away with a streak of anger over a surprising lack of documentation and examples.
#GTK and #GNOME app development have always been a quest that involves throwing a ring in a fiery mountain, while hoping for the best, but in the 25 years since GTK+'s introduction, it has only gotten worse, it just looks prettier now. sigh. #linux
@ebassi that's... wow man, ok.
Does nobody see the lunacy in, "Well if you want to develop a native gnome app, you have to use a whole different package management system kthx?"
You clearly have no idea what amount of work goes into writing documentation that covers every little possible downstream, especially for people who are not already familiar with Linux development.
But yeah, as I said: it's pointless for me to even answer your ranting. You're just angry at stuff, at the moment. Or all the time.
@ebassi This is why a lot of "newcomers" just write Electron apps, now.
I'm not a newcomer. I was coding in SunView, when you were still in diapers, coded in GTK+ when it was brand new, tracked its progress.
And I am extremely disappointed at how the two biggest Linux toolkits have emphasized style over substance.
I wrote this in July and never promoted it because it is silly.

They do many things right, and many good things. But binding a free system to a proprietary server to me makes them unusable. I'm glad at least derivatives are not affected.
