They lost my trust back in 2014 when they introduced Amazon results into their desktop search – so 12.04 was the last Ubuntu I've used. Since then, though they rolled that one back pretty fast, they've confirmed my suspicion of "they did it once, they'll do similar things again" more than once. Snap sounded suspicious from its very start; *silently* converting an "apt install firefox" into some Snap install is betrayal, simply and poor.
I'm no fan of Flatpack either – but agreeing to that is simply wrong. It's promoting monopolism. Seems like it's no longer enough to not recommend Ubuntu, but rather to warn about it.
They do many things right, and many good things. But binding a free system to a proprietary server to me makes them unusable. I'm glad at least derivatives are not affected.
True. In the meantime, I'll try adding my Matrix address on my profile and let's see if that will encourage people to use that channel instead of direct messages.

Yeah not sure if the resources would be low enough for a server to handle that. I have heard already that the a mastodon server is pretty big. Probably something like #xmpp would be bedter suited.
The #Mastodon server and #Matrix homeserver don't have to be colocated. E.g. you could be on mymastodon.example.com and hook it up to your matrix a/c on matrix.org. The larger #ActivityPub instances could use a small Matrix homeserver for it users without a declared matrix address, and automatically create a matrix a/c for them for the sole purpose of DMing.
The architectural possibilities are quite wide, I suspect.

Add the security of secret chat, and you add a whole another stress to running an instance. Why do we need to do this?

@eibhear Secure DMs mean that people can only run native clients, and that the web interface becomes useless for DMs. Most security people that I know of regard cryptography with JavaScript in the browser as a joke in poor taste.
If you want secure DMs then just use apps which have been designed for that purpose.

@aardrian I think this might be a fairly recent regression (months maybe), but not sure. It used to be a lot worse, to the point where i had to Greasemonkey it to make it remotely efficient for me. I still have a Greasemonkey script to fix certain annoyances, but that list is shorter than it used to be.
@sukiletxe I know right? The only thing I can think is that there might be an icon visually which indicates whether it's a pull request or an issue. Maybe someone complained or they just decided that they should expose that information, so they did it in the aria-label... without considering the loss of other contextual information provided by the text.
The daftest one I’ve seen which to be fair has mostly been fixed is Startpage labeled most all of their homepage links as ‘link’. I think the only reason why they finally sort of fixed it is that I complained. There’s still a few at the bottom like it.

I was considering donating to LibreOffice, now I guess there is little point since you anyway have the support of Google, and I guess you also get Google giving you advice on your development. You don't need my money, when Google has so much more money to give you.

I just don't get it. Look at what Google is, their whole business is based on exploiting people, in large part using "free" things that are not really free but paid for with invasion of privacy.
Look at "Google Docs" that is dominating so hugely in the world today, the idea being that Google tracks your every move when editing a document. This is totally opposed to the freedom that I want, and the freedom that I want to believe that LibreOffice wants.
it is obvious that the situation today with "Google Docs" and so on is bad for people's freedom and bad for the independence of individuals. People should be using free software on their own terms, instead of being exploited by Google.
I would expect LibreOffice to be able to say so, but when you associate with Google I guess you will not say it, you will pretend like Google is good because Google gives you money.

As for what "Google Summer of Code" actually is, for me it's quite clear that it is a very successful PR stunt on the part of Google.
The cost for Google is negligible, after all it's a trillion-dollar company.
The benefit for Google, on the other hand, is substantial: they get LibreOffice (and Debian, GNOME, KDE and others) saying essentially "Google is good", you are communicating that "Google is good" through your own channels.

I spent yesterday evening trying to see how to make apps that use #libadwaita (the latest UI for #GNOME), and walked away with a streak of anger over a surprising lack of documentation and examples.
#GTK and #GNOME app development have always been a quest that involves throwing a ring in a fiery mountain, while hoping for the best, but in the 25 years since GTK+'s introduction, it has only gotten worse, it just looks prettier now. sigh. #linux
The idea that the GTK documentation has only gotten worse is, quite frankly, puzzling to me, considering the amount of work myself and others have put into it to make it easy to read, consistent, and up to date.
If by "examples" you mean "code I can copy and paste at random" then, yeah: it's going to be hard to provide full coverage.
Builder will not download the dependencies for you if you're using the host, but it will do that if you're building against the Flatpak run time—which is typically the default when using Builder installed via Flatpak.
You'll have to enter the project configuration (Alt + , or the Configure Project item in the build dropdown) and make sure that the project is using Flatpak by selecting the manifest that Builder generates.
You don't *have* to, but it's the only way to provide a consistent way to get started for newcomers. Of course, if you approach it from the perspective of being "lunacy" then I don't have anything to say that will convince you. I wish you good luck with figuring out how to install all the required dependencies on your flavour of Linux.
You clearly have no idea what amount of work goes into writing documentation that covers every little possible downstream, especially for people who are not already familiar with Linux development.
