Okay, I'm loving this gitlab CLI. I'm so glad that I know about it now. Of course, I need to figure out how to do things with it, but, for instance, I can just go into my at-spi2-core directory from the console and type
glab mr update 220 --draft
Otherwise, I'd need to open gitlab.gnome.org in a browser, click the button to sign in, type in my username and password, get my phone out for the two-factor authentication, then find the control on the web page to do what I want.

🎉 arcanechat.me server upgraded! 🎉
some of you might have noticed arcanechat.me was down for a few minutes, that was because I was migrating to the new more powerful server as announced some days ago!
besides having a faster more powerful server, now every user have 2GB of temporary storage! useful if you receive a lot of media!
🎁 this is my Christmas gift for the #ArcaneChat users, if you feel like showing back your love, you can support my work here:

Quick PSA : yes, #Mozilla has been disappointing, but so far, they’re the only organization preventing Google to have a full control over web standards. Blink/WebKit-based browsers (Chromium, Vivaldi…) do NOT help at all in that regard.
So please use #Firefox or a #Gecko-based alternative (#ZenBrowser, #LibreWolf…). Ride the nightly release train and report bugs if you can. #Servo is getting ready, but for the next ~5 years, Gecko is our only suitable option.
Techbros seem to love Tolkien, so here's an analogy to help you understand what GenAI is.GenAI is The One Ring. You think your use is justified, because you don't have evil in your heart.
But it came from evil, it is intended for evil purpose, and anything you do with it will be twisted to that end.
Not just that but Tolkien also said: "Evil cannot create anything new, it can only corrupt and ruin what good forces have invented or made.".
Sound familiar ?

Here's to me rebuilding curl in Debian without LDAP support because that uses Elder Ciphers Not Meant For Current OpenSSL Releases and subsequently breaking.... the ruby libvirt bindings.

"But that’s just the Economics 101 reason not to do this. The other one is this: I’m pretty sure people actually hate this? You have the data, you know."
Oh yeah, they do, but their goal isn't making features people don't hate. Their goal is making profitable features which people hate, but not to the extend they would leave the service. And because they have data, they have learned that the threshold is really high for most people.
So we have a market with a handful of dominant services which are hated by their users, but it isn't going to change until people stop complaining about it and actually start leaving them.
I take your point. People apparently don't hate this enough to leave right now. But the thing about losing goodwill is that things happen gradually, and then suddenly. I think that a good business leader should be sensitive to this. The fact that the data doesn't show enough outflow to worry about _today_ doesn't mean you're not going to see something much worse in the future.
We all know the rationale of shoving AI on people. I just thing 2 massive buttons around every email is stupd
Just tried building a rust project using cargo and it started pulling and building 385 dependency packages without any confirmation prompt. This is insane and super not secure. How are rust devs ok with this?
EDIT: to make it clear, my problem is that it didn't stop for confirmation. This is not ok. I thought NPM was bad but this is insane.
Here is the price evolution of the Kingston FURY 64GB KIT DDR5 6000MHz CL36 Beast EXPO that I have in my new PC:
September - 5400 CZK (€221)
Mid November (what I paid) - 7000 CZK (€287)
End of November - 12890 CZK (€528)
Now - 16390 CZK (€672)
What to say... #AI is changing the world, but not in the way that people had envisaged.

somewhat nerdsniped into just coding something that generates cross-stitch.
gist.github.com/bazzargh/be402…
from there it'd not be difficult to drop it in three.js and get a 3d version, in a wood-textured frame, but I've wasted enough time on this!

altbot v2.4 is here!!
just pushed a pretty significant update, swapped out the old gemma3 27b model for qwen3-vl:30b-a3b-thinking and holy shit the difference is noticeable
the cool thing about this model is it's very dynamic, simple images get quick, concise descriptions without overexplaining everything. and with complex images, it takes its time and actually thinks through what it's looking at. you get better alt-text without wasting compute on stuff that doesn't need it.
basically: smarter where it counts, efficient where it doesn't.
oh and here's the part that made me double-check my math: electricity usage dropped by MORE THAN 10x. complex images that used to cost ~0.950 Wh now only use ~0.092 Wh. this is thanks to MoE (mixture of experts) architecture, despite being a 30b parameter model, it only activates 3b worth of parameters at a time. so you get way better results while using a fraction of the power.
been testing this for a bit now and honestly really happy with the results. descriptions are more accurate, less hallucination-y, and the model describes way better than before.
as always, altbot is fully open source and processes everything locally, no data gets sent to third parties. your images stay private.

If you get yelled at for calling the wrong number, you've just struck gold, because if they're allowed to yell at you, they have access to the internal corporate phone directory and can get you the person you actually want.
People underestimate the power of calling random numbers unrelated to their case (investor relations, press inquiries, legal and so on), and saying "sorry, Chat GPT told me to call this number when the main customer support hotline couldn't help me, can you give me the number for office x instead?"
Those people are usually a lot more empowered to actually help you than some outsourced third-world-country customer support contractor with no access to internal company systems beyond what's required to complete 90% of the most common inquiries.
I've moved pretty much all my daily driver stuff (except web browsing) from Windows to Mac, in preparation for my up-coming trip. I don't want to drag two laptops with me, so I'm using as much as I can on Mac OS, and have a Windows 11 virtual machine for the rest of it.
I stepped away from using Mac OS for a few years, and am now once again at the point where using it doesn't feel completely odd. So, that's exciting, I suppose.
The USA's continuing attrition against Venezuelan small boats in the Caribbean has now reached a death toll of over a hundred.
Noam Chomsky always used to point out: if you want to understand how power works in international relations, in a case like this reverse the protagonists & ask what would then be happening?
So, if Venezuelan armed forces had attacked a number of small US boats in the Caribbean, killing their crew, how would that now being playing out?
I think we know!

Order something as a Christmas gift. For reasons of being an actual human being with a budget and having to wait till salaries arrive before ordering, we ordered the same month we expected it.
We paid extra for next-day delivery.
Three days later, "Your order has not been processed yet, we'll message you when it gets put in a box"
