This is a good one. Sounds like the “back” button in Safari which will display the history of visited website. Wow, so useful. I wonder when this was introduced? dragonscave.space/@scottrut/11…
in reply to victor tsaran

Yeah, it's been there for a while. I noticed it once when I paused before hitting the back button and heard the hint that a double tap and hold would bring up the history. Once in a great while I remember to listen for the hint to see if I can pick up something new.

I think VoiceOver does a good job with hints. For example, I like how when I'm using the braille screen input command mode.

Diwali is on Halloween this year. The festival of lights will be competing with the festival of the candy industry. :blueMoji_frustrated:

I always felt like Halloween worked as a themed month, but as a day why’d it have to be on Diwali. Ugh.

in reply to Seirdy

Sorry, I didn’t want to make a big general statement about Halloween. Please enjoy it if you like it. This was a more personal vent.

Things like this are inevitable when you shove the Hindu lunisolar calendar and the Gregorian calendar onto the same timeline.

It just occurred to me for no particular reason that there are people on the internet too young to remember the song The Internet Is For Porn and if you were to make a reference to it they would take your statement literally.
in reply to Dave Mac Farlane

I reached that when I could say "I was on the internet before you were born". And these people are 30 now.

#iphone menus tip. How many times have you been buried in levels of menus and wish there was a faster way of returning to the top level of a particular menu group. This can be done and I wanted to share this tip with everyone. Here is an example. If you go to Settings accessibility VoiceOver settings and choose speech and drill down in to the different voices, if you wish to get back to the very top level of settings, Double tap and hold on the back button and then you can flick to the right and go back to whichever level you desire. This is awesome if you’re four or five levels in and wish to return to the top level. I hope this is useful.

Sam Altman believes #AI is using a trivial amount of energy.

"The energy use of AI, I think relative to the value it's creating, is quite tiny today. I don't want to minimize it too much, because it's going to go up — like we will use gigawatts over time, out of, you know, terawatts on Earth."

I guess this depends on if the energy use of small countries is trivial and if you believe Earth can sustain producing terawatts of energy indefinitely.

Journalists who continue to actively post on Musk's site are actively supporting the business of a man who a) hates honest journalism; b) amplifies and gives big money to a presidential candidate who hates them and will act on that if he's back in power; and c) wants to bring down democracy itself.

No rationalization at this point is legitimate.

in reply to Juan CBS

I'm curious -- has anyone used a static site generator with really good backwards compatibility? (ideally over 5+ years)

I use (and love) Hugo but I've decided keep using a release from 2018 forever because it seems like there have been a lot of backwards incompatible changes since then and I don't feel like doing the work to upgrade

(edit: from the responses it seems like lots of people have found Jekyll to be very stable, especially with github pages. Also maybe eleventy.)

in reply to Julia Evans

Thank you for raising the backward-comatibility issue. I'm contemplating writing a small, professional Web site, and this issue reinforces the view that I should opt for the most backward-compatible option of all by writing the HTML directly. I'm not suggesting this is necessarily the right solution for anyone else though.

A small compendium of the Fediverse platforms I use/know well.

In the past few days, I revisited some of my old Fediverse instances since some friends asked me to help them set up a new one. I also took the chance to perform maintenance on some leftover instances. Here's my experience:

Akkoma: My oldest instance still running, opened in 2022. It was offline for a few months (3/4). I updated everything to the latest version and restarted it. I’m not sure why, but it’s extremely slow, with a heavy load on Postgres and many queries just to open the main page. I like Akkoma - I'll investigate further.

GoToSocial: I updated a friend's instance - GoToSocial itself was up-to-date, but the underlying system wasn’t. I noticed that once it exceeds 2000 followings, it becomes a bit slow. The database is PostgreSQL, but that's not the issue. The GoToSocial process becomes somewhat heavy on the VPS. Still, it's very usable and a software with great potential, in my opinion. The Mastodon API is implemented quite well and works with the major software.

Mitra: It seems well-built. The person had around 1000 followers and followings on a Mastodon account, which they moved from a large instance. No speed issues, though sending a message makes the server “heavy” for a bit, but it’s temporary. The Mastodon API is partially implemented, but the software is advancing quickly, and I find its native interface quite pleasant.

Snac2: I've always had a soft spot for Snac2. The lack of a database and some design choices make it an excellent solution for small instances. For example, sending posts to all known instances increases visibility and interaction. Its basic, JavaScript-free interface is very clear, though it might not be the best for those used to Mastodon. But the Mastodon API is improving version by version, and I think the developer is doing an excellent job. It struggles a bit with larger numbers, but that's due to the underlying file system, not the software itself. If "move" support (both in and out) were added, I would recommend it to anyone starting self-hosting for single-user or small community instances because "move" is one of the options that gives the most freedom in Fediverse software.

Mastodon: My “old” personal instance was stuck at version 4.1.x and had been offline for a few months. I updated the FreeBSD Jail and upgraded Mastodon to 4.2.12 and then to 4.3.0-beta1. No issues. I also helped a friend (who had an old Pleroma-based instance they barely used) migrate. This user has around 5000 followers and followings - Mastodon is running on FreeBSD on a VPS (arm64) for just over 3 euros a month, with no significant issues (apart from media storage, but that's not Mastodon’s fault). Mastodon is sometimes said to be heavy, and that's partly true, but its modularity ensures that even in cases of overload, queues may slow down, but navigation and the local timeline remain reasonably fast. I think this is a good thing for any larger-scale use of an instance.

In short, I think things are moving in the right direction, and the software is evolving nicely. Well done, devs!

I called EMS once and police showed up before paramedics (paramedics were busy).

The first thing they said? “You don’t look sick.”

They waited for paramedics who took me to hospital - but that initial response stuck with me.

It’s why mask bans are dangerous. Police aren’t trained to make medical decisions. They shouldn’t be the ones deciding who can and can’t legally wear a mask.

Many illnesses are invisible - you wouldn’t KNOW we’re disabled to look at us.

Most of us have experienced gaslighting from friends, family and even doctors - people are quick to judge and decide you’re “not that sick.”

So are we really expected to risk criminal charges by wearing a respirator & just HOPE police will believe we truly “need it”?

Not to mention that medical exemptions leave behind anyone who wants to mask to protect and preserve their health - as well as caregivers and family of disabled people.

We rely on them to keep us safe - we NEED them masking in public.

I sincerely hope more people join the fight against mask bans soon - because if we don’t fight against them - more cities and states will pass them and more people will suffer.

A good respirator is excellent protection against covid & other illnesses.

We shouldn’t be further excluding disabled and high risk people from public - but that’s exactly what these ugly laws do.

Call your elected officials - tell them medical masks can not and should not be banned.

Don’t embrace escalating fascism and eugenics just because you don’t think it will impact you.

Don’t celebrate it because you hold a grudge about mask mandates.

It won’t stop with disabled people. Help us now & your future self will thank you.

PSA: if you are fuzzing a library you should be prepared to fix the shit you find. Because coming up with "let's revert the patch" is counter productive.

Give a bit of that ad money to actually fix things.

I was trash talking advertising and while searching for a reference to something I vaguely remembered I found this discussion of a result showing the more advertising a society is exposed to the unhappier people are.

hbr.org/2020/01/advertising-ma…

"The University of Warwick’s Andrew Oswald and his team compared survey data on the life satisfaction of more than 900,000 citizens of 27 European countries from 1980 to 2011 with data on annual advertising spending in those nations over the same period. The researchers found an inverse connection between the two. The higher a country’s ad spend was in one year, the less satisfied its citizens were a year or two later. Their conclusion: Advertising makes us unhappy."
