By popular demand we're moving the GNOME 46 Berlin release party by one week, to Saturday April 6th and Sunday 7th.

Everything else remains the same, we're still going to do hacking, cooking, and talks at @offline on Saturday and more focused hacking on Sunday :)

Time to let the cat out of the bag.

I've been working on a new app to use your #Linux phones and tablets as secondary wireless "side displays" (not mirrors). This is based on #GStreamer, x264, #Mutter APIs, and low-latency UDP streaming, and will be designed to work on both ARM and Intel, regardless of hardware acceleration support. (Testing on a #librem5)

This is still at an early stage, and will take some time to become usable. Thoughts and feedback?

#Gnome WOO.. #Not !!

#Whut .. @gnome

..still no mouse driven, simple add a desktop App icon? till you learn this .. remain banished in the paleolithic, no deployment, till you you can demonstrate basic userland concepts . . . (without jammin' your mandatory 'efficiency' #BS work flow agenda down my neck, how the f___ do you know what I need?? You did not ask! ) .. so, its #KDE #XFCE #LXDE for me and my users.. who sometimes just ~ want~ it on the desktop.

#Seriously .. _____ off.

Wohooo! Congratulations, and well done to everyone involved!

Thank you devs, thank you designers, thank you translators, thank you bug reporters, thank you QA people, thank you feature suggesters, thank you money donators, thank you evangelists, thank you documenters, thank you people working tirelessly in the background with keeping up the websites and communication channels and schedules and meetings and brewing coffee and everything else that's needed for #Gnome to be all that it is!

Today #GNOME 46 is released and as it has been a tradition for 16 years, I wrote an article about the release for @rootcz (in Czech).

Why #gnome software always want to "Restart & Update"?

#Debian

Sam Thursfield, a software engineer at Codethink, recently led a project for Outreachy covering improving end-to-end testing for #GNOME.

Outreachy is an organisation that provides paid open source internships to people who are subject to systematic bias and underrepresentation.

You can read about how the project went and the outcomes here: buff.ly/3PkufkA

After being kneecapped by a #patents troll years ago, #Mozilla Location Services, the only somewhat trusted (non-Google/Apple) "Wi-Fi positioning system" (geolocation based on triangulating collected #WiFi SSIDs), is now shutting down: github.com/mozilla/ichnaea/iss…

MLS was how #GeoClue could get a meters-accurate location without a #GPS receiver / sky line-of-sight.

It was used by many #GNOME / #KDE apps to get instantaneous neighborhood-level location (for maps, local weather…) on #Linux laptops.

So @gnome is removing the x11 session, leaving just the Wayland one.

If this goes out before Orca, the GNOME screen reader, is fixed to work on Wayland, it will mean that people who rely on screen readers will have no way to use one on GNOME. And thus on the major Linux distributions.

So I’m hoping the plan is that this change will not land until GNOME has a working screen reader.

The #GUADEC2024 call for abstracts for those looking to be *sponsored* has passed (due to visa reqs & travel lead time), BUT the call for both in-person (if you don’t need sponsorship) and remote talks IS STILL OPEN!

events.gnome.org/event/209/abs…

If you’ve been working on something interesting in GNOME or GNOME-adjacent spaces and can present remotely or get yourself to Denver in July, you still have just over two weeks to propose a talk!

Is this Python diagnostics coming to Workbench 46 ? :python: :gnome:

Why yes it is!

Collaborative effort with @janvhs and @capypara 🙌

We are using pylsp and Ruff.

I'm also very excited to share that all 100+ demos have been ported to Python. Thanks to all contributors!

Over the last months the Rust/cargo support in meson improved a lot.

It's now ready to build and install a GTK4 Rust application with around 70 dependencies without having to write almost any custom build glue for the dependencies.

github.com/sdroege/mandelbrot#…

The application in question is just a small experiment of mine for rayon and GTK4 input handling / rendering. The more or less same should work for other GTK4 applications at this point.

All this still depends on two unmerged meson PRs, but it's a huge step forward from the situation just a few months ago.

Thanks to the hard work of @xclaesse and dcbaker!

I hope in the future this will allow GNOME applications written in Rust to have a less strange and fragile build setup than what they have right now with mixing cargo and meson.
