In the Netherlands we had a weird law introduced a while ago: to fight sodas the government introduced a tax on all drinks, with the exception of dairy (because, you know, lobby). For some reason it was exceptionally difficult to make a distinction between sodas and fruit juice, so they got swept up in the tax.

The food industry retaliated by adding trace amounts of milk to their fruit drinks. After all, there’s no legal distinction between a milk drink with added fruit flavor or a fruit juice with added milk.

So we got this kind of nonsense: fruit juice “with a twist of dairy” to avoid the tax. Dutch innovation at its best I guess.

Do they sell these in other countries though?

I got weirdly good sleep last night. It could have been better, but at this point I'll take what I can get. I've had my usual two cups of coffee and I'm pretty sure breakfast is happening. I'm not 100 percent on that but even if not it's all right. I switched back to old WhatsApp which has improved things a lot, hoping I don't get force updated, again, if I do I'll cross that bridge. Even though there is some physical discomfort I'm in an oddly good mood. Hoping to stay that way. I've been down as of late and I hate it. Fuck you depression.

Do you want help with using Mastodon or the wider Fediverse?

Please feel free to ask if you have any questions about using this place! There's no such thing as a silly question, it's fine to ask about anything however simple.

I'm especially keen to help new or non-technical people on here 🙂 And yes I am a human being, I don't use AIs!

(Alternatively, you can browse my website at fedi.tips which has lots of easy-to-understand help and advice.)

@JEkis Before doing all of this, make sure that you uninstall whatsapp that you installed from microsoft store.
First download this zip file:
drive.google.com/uc?id=12Z3kjH…

Enable developer mode in windows.
Extract the wa folder from inside the zip file you downloaded to c:\.
Open powershell and enter this command.
Add-AppxPackage -Register "C:\WA\AppxManifest.xml"

Great presenter too! :)

I just found an interesting video segment on PBS about the old Eureka A4 Braille computer, featuring it singing, playing music, and more. youtube.com/watch?v=84C5SFRh81…

Peter Vágner reshared this.

I'm just making a note of this because I'm old enough to remember and a lot of people aren't – I saw someone claim that Google stole the name Chrome "from Firefox's internals", which makes no sense.

Back in the early 2000s, "chrome" was common programmer slang for "user interface". Like in general. Any user interface at all was "the chrome." I have no doubt Firefox's older source code refers to it as chrome, because I'm pretty sure I was referring to UI as "chrome" in my own university homework assignments at the time.

The term became much less common after Google Chrome launched because it became too confusing. Google's own claim is that the name was inspired by sports cars, and the programmers found it funny because having less "chrome" in the UI sense was an explicit goal. Whether that's true or not: they definitely didn't spitefully steal some secret Firefox codeword???

The above post is not to be construed under any circumstances as general approval of Google and everything they have ever done ever, and anyone yelling at me about how I'm a bad member of their religion because I said this SPECIFIC accusation is ahistorical will be blocked to the moon and back.

I took the last couple weeks off, but not the 2nd I'm pretty sure, so I have one day, then the weekend. But then I'm writing some documentation for a piece of Linux accessibility infrastructure that I maintain, and I need to clean it up, and a release is due on Saturday, so I have work to do anyhow. I'm really glad that I'm allowed to work on that when I don't have other important things to do, since it's kinda my responsibility regardless, unless someone takes it over from me. But then i might also have other things to work on, so we'll see. Sorry--I'm just rambling at you now, but I kinda wish I was off until the 5th.

"Moon bags" in Japan refer to stylish, crescent-shaped crossbody or shoulder bags, often with a sleek, structured design or inspired by Japanese aesthetics like minimalism and art, made from materials like leather or unique Japanese textiles, serving as fashionable, practical carriers for daily essentials. They're a trend focused on a curved, half-moon silhouette, popular for their modern look and versatility in carrying essentials hands-free. Also, perfect for the Cadence Braille displays. I'll be using one in the future to avoid my mishap again.

✔ Say you search for something and there's a list of smart results.

You have a toggle that enables something like 'strict keyword matching' - which means any result not having those keywords will be dealt with.

👀 Catch: Keep in mind that often search results can be indirectly related to what you looking for without containing those keywords.

Question is, how would you like them dealt with?

I have been trying to create a list for #fosdem26 and realized that (ironically) most of the people in the socialweb track ... does not have a fediverse account listed there.

I am also at fault, btw, so shame to me.

If you know someone who is presenting at #fosdem26 please send them my way. I will update this thread with the list of confirmed speakers.

So installing Windows 11 LTSC alone did actually fix most of the Asus Driver issues I had. Wifi, bluetooth, and audio/speaker drivers work again. Still had to load the drive driver at installation, but well that was all. Glad I actually didn't have to bloat it with that stupid My Asus app and to have a suitable Laptop again. It's weird, I could've sworn it had 32 GB of Ram but can only see 16. Well I guess my brain is just rotting away...
