I've been using #Firefox derivative #Zen #browser for a couple of months, and am very happy with it. As a refugee from #Arc, I love the similar tab UI and the split-screen view. And it has all of the #privacy features of Firefox, with none of the #chromium
Vivaldi with uBlock Origin Lite and the built-in blockers turned on works well, and overall, I trust the company, even if I don't prefer their browser. At least they're a European company with all the protections included.
Firefox, on the other hand, does have the reputation. I'm concerned about their direction though, and I have concerns about AI. If they develop it for localized translations, that's not too bad. As for advertising, I understand they need to find an income stream that's not Google, and if the ads are based on the site being visited, not on user browsing history, that's fine. I expect to see ads for beer and trucks when I watch sports, so why not ads for music-related companies if I visit a music website.
I'm using #zenbrowser as a casual replacement to Firefox atm. The native customization options are a big feature plus for me. #arkenfox user.js can be applied to any #firefox fork.
In the future #ladybird could be a good option, lets see...
Zen Browser/Vivaldi here. Not comfortable with Mozilla putting "privacy preserving advertising" in the browser (honestly feels counterintuitive to the whole adblock thing), and Zen knocks that out with the setting automatically applied, while having a nice GUI.
Vivaldi's there as a Chromium backup (since Gecko is still slow to add some stuff e.g. gradients)

Is there any screen reader or browser extension that eliminates soft hyphens when reading a web page? Some authors or blog themes add soft hyphens throughout text, presumably to allow the browser to do hyphenation at the end of the line, but this has the side effect of breaking up words, which is bad for text-to-speech. I don't have a solution for you, but this did remind me of this Firefox bug I filed, where one of the solutions I proposed was not exposing soft hyphens to accessibility at all. bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.…
In browse mode, that's probably reasonable. There are reasons that would be a bit annoying to implement in NVDA related to the logic to calculate IA2 text offsets from buffer offsets, but that's just a technical issue that would need to be overcome. For editable text, it's obviously a lot harder because you're relying on the browser caret there.
that example has random hyphens at the beginning of lines too though. It's not something i come across often. I guess any screen reader could use dictionaries to ignore these but I'm not sure what the substitution would be ... a nonbreaking spae maybe?
I stuck it in NVDA's speech dictionary to get rid of them when reading generally. doesn't work when navigating by word, of course, but it's helpful for your average sentence.
I recently drove a car whose whole control and entertainment system was a gigantic iPad-like thing mounted to the dash. It caused me to have a realisation about the #Ui and #UX of touch screens.
There is no way to touch a touchscreen without it treating that touch as intentional. What I mean is: without taking my eyes off the road, I can grope across the dashboard, find a knob or button—by touching it—without activating any function. Touching the volume button or temperature knob doesn’t DO anything until I do it with more force and intentionality. Not so for a #touchscreen.
My mobile #phone (an #iPhone 13) has no dead space in its face. There’s no part of the phone face I can touch without it assuming I meant to do that and I wanted to activate whatever was under my finger. Old iPhones that had physical home buttons also had dead space to either side: a safe space to hold the phone without DOING anything.
Computer keyboard have little raised pips on the F and J keys so you can find them by touch without looking. I do this all the time. But I don’t type the letters F or J. Touch screens have no such affordances.
I look at the #blackberry keyboard in this photo and I see a raised space bar. It’s an #affordance that lets you orient your fingers, and orient how you hold the phone, without looking.
Don't know what the video was about, but people like that guy yelling his lungs out here are way too many. And not to mention, it's way too scary. It screams "run!"
Reading this article posted by @bagder made me realize that I haven't seen ANYBODY explaining exactly what the long-term strategy vis-a-vis code maintenance is, when the code itself was "written" by a junior using ChatGPT. The junior is definitely not going to be able to help (since they're not going to learn and become a senior), so is the expectation that somebody else will use ChatGPT again to update it to use newer libraries etc? I don't think it matters who or what wrote the code. Once a maintainer accepts the code, its their code. Then its the maintainers job. We just need to try to make sure the code is as good as possible before we accept it.
For educational purposes we disclose this recent hackerone report on #curl claiming its sprintf() implementation is bad because it can be made to deref a bad pointer when you use it incorrectly. You know, exactly how all sprintf() implementation work - by design.

I also think it's extremely inspirational for other opensource devs; the idea that the world is just that open that if you have a good idea and you can write it out in a solid secure and performant way, everyone will just flock to you, it's a magical thing to watch unfold every time some person or group comes up with some new opensource idea that ends up changing things radically across the landscape, or things that stay around for eternity because they do it right, like Curl, Linux, etc
Things did not work out the way we had planned. The 7.88.0 release that was supposed to be the last curl version 7 release contained a nasty bug that made us decide that we better ship an update once that is fixed. This is the update.
I have this nailed down as what I would like to get to during 2025 for #curl. I assume other things will happen as well. Some of these things will only happen given enough support/sponsorship.

You're right. Missed that comment. For post-quantum crypto no quantum computer is needed, it's "only" a different mathematical problem used for encryption, one that quantum computers can't break.

great blog post, yes. Every project I've contributed to, I'm still in communication with years later (decades, even). Because I've maintained my own projects for that time, and I know that's what it takes to keep things working.
I don't do (professional) coding, but as an electrical/mechanical engineer I see the same thing happening in my work: Person A designs a product, but due to time or project constraints gets reassigned elsewhere. Person B then continues to make the work drawings to have it produced, not really knowing what was important in the design. Later, person C has some spare time, so (s)he can make the documentation. And all important aspects are lost in the transitions and never documented.
