Oh what a terrible decision.
Canonical will prevent Ubuntu flavors to come with Flatpak preinstalled, as they want to push snaps.

Kind of a Microsoft-like move here. Really bad.

in reply to Nick @ The Linux Experiment

I'm no fan of Flatpack either – but agreeing to that is simply wrong. It's promoting monopolism. Seems like it's no longer enough to not recommend Ubuntu, but rather to warn about it.

They do many things right, and many good things. But binding a free system to a proprietary server to me makes them unusable. I'm glad at least derivatives are not affected.

There's a serious opportunity for #Mastodon and other #ActivityPub systems to implement properly secure DMs by integrating #Matrix from @Matrix.org .
in reply to vagabond

Let's look at an example, backups and security, currently on #mastodon and the whole #Fediverse the is an understanding that nothing is actually private (ok mastodon keeps telling white lies about this, i don't blame them) so we trust our admins not to spy, and we don't stress about the lossyness of it all.

Add the security of secret chat, and you add a whole another stress to running an instance. Why do we need to do this?

This is totally insane. They are essentially burning plastic and calling it a “biofuel.” It’s just fuel in another form. 1 out of 4 people who breathe in this poison will get cancer.

Compelling interview by Andy Park for Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Radio National program with #RebeccaGiblin and @doctorow discussing their new book, #ChokePointCapitalism.

A must-listen for anyone interested in #monopsony, concentration of #power and #arts policy.

You can get the book at: chokepointcapitalism.com

In today's episode of poor uses of ARIA, when you link directly to an issue comment (not just the issue itself) in GitHub, you get this (simplified):
<a aria-label="Issue #904" href="github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issue…">#904 (comment)</a>
So a screen reader user gets "issue #904" while a sighted user sees "#904 (comment)". So the fact that it is a link to a comment is lost to the screen reader user. Seriously, people!

LibreOffice has been selected for the ☀ Google Summer of Code! New features will be added to the suite – find out more: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl…
in reply to LibreOffice

Thanks again for answering.

As for what "Google Summer of Code" actually is, for me it's quite clear that it is a very successful PR stunt on the part of Google.

The cost for Google is negligible, after all it's a trillion-dollar company.

The benefit for Google, on the other hand, is substantial: they get LibreOffice (and Debian, GNOME, KDE and others) saying essentially "Google is good", you are communicating that "Google is good" through your own channels.

Well, I'm making a podcast, in French, on how to integrate podcasts in public libraries (from curation to production).

I plan to release, in the next few days, a special episode on podcast apps. I'll talk about three Andoid apps, AntennaPod being of course one of them.

So, I'd be glad to make an update special episode when 3.0 release is out.

Count me in !

Here is the podcast :

Years ago elementary was approached by Canonical to become an official Ubuntu flavor. “All” we had to do was offer Snap out of the box. We debated it—being able to offload some additional infrastructure concerns was attractive—but we realized it helped Canonical more than it helped us, and we had chosen Flatpak for all of its benefits as covered here:

My guide on #maintainer burnout and departure planning:

"All maintainers eventually leave (or stop leading) projects.... It's worth taking a moment to imagine: what would a GOOD departure look like for your involvement with your project? Or... what endings or departures would be...clearer, more respectful, less wasteful?"

New phone who dis? It's real!
The #Librem5 is almost like the #PinePhone's big sibling (slightly more specced up) - a Linux pocket computerbox bringing desktop covergence to a phone - and @purism has contributed most of the code that allows Gnome/Phosh/Linux on a phone to resize desktop apps. Happy to finally get mine and support this project! Purism got slammed by supply chain issues during the pandemic and is now catching up on shipping ❤️ See puri.sm/ #foss #opensource #linux

Microsoft injecting ads onto competitors webpages (not search results, their actual own webpages) is severely crossing a line. Do not use Microsoft Edge, they need to be shunned for doing crap like this slashdot.org/story/23/02/22/11…

As #Linux users, or even as #Windows users, we often hear a lot of preconceived notions, like "Linux is faster", or "Windows has better battery life".

Well, I decided to quantify all of it in a complete benchmark between Windows 11 and #ubuntu

CPU and GPU benchmarks, disk speeds, thermals, internet speeds, gaming benchmarks, battery life, I looked at everything on the same device, and the conclusions were... surprising:

I spent yesterday evening trying to see how to make apps that use #libadwaita (the latest UI for #GNOME), and walked away with a streak of anger over a surprising lack of documentation and examples.

#GTK and #GNOME app development have always been a quest that involves throwing a ring in a fiery mountain, while hoping for the best, but in the 25 years since GTK+'s introduction, it has only gotten worse, it just looks prettier now. sigh. #linux
