Itching to try GNOME 49 today? Developers and curious testers can try GNOME OS in a virtual machine or bare metal:

os.gnome.org/

Just remember that GNOME OS itself is considered pre-release software; bad things may happen if you use it in production. Happy testing!

Mahjongg was accepted into Circle! 🀄🀄🀄

It's one the historical GNOME games, but thanks to Mat's modernization work over the past few cycles it looks very fresh and clean nowadays. Welcome :)

The #gnome #bug reporter still wants to push reports onto bugzilla that has been replaced by their #gitlab instance.

Is that a known issue?
Couldn't find any reference online, how that will change in future.

My #fedora rarely crashes so it's not a big issue. However, I'd like to contribute data for improving software.

#question

Fingerprint reader functionality under #Linux sucks.

1. Every few reboots/updates/whatever-triggers it, the fingerprint functionality GETS DISABLED all by itself. The bug is there in BOTH Ubuntu and Arch Linux ( #gnome ).

2. GDM won't let me choose between pass & fingerprint reading. This has repercussions for gnome's keyring.

3. Because the keyring is not unlocked, launching things like Chrome requires you to type a password! Again!

Overall, abysmal.

Guys at @thunderbird
I Love what you have done to the email client, it's now beautiful, fast, lovable, well ... thank you so much!
BTW ... I run it in @opensuse #Tumbleweed on the excellent #gnome DE

#linux but also #android question: are there any good apps/utilities for switching between different #wallpapers? I'm currently using a script I wrote for my laptop but if there was an existing, maintained utility (or even better a #GNOME app!) for this that'd be great :3

hey, #GNOME devs, here's an idea: put a "start a wi-fi hotspot" button in the top-right status pop-up, or maybe as an option at the bottom of the wireless networks list, so that i don't have to open the settings app for that

also having some sort of status display for how many devices are connected to your hotspot would be nice

Over a week on #Gnome and #Debian now. And I must say that I love it. Never thought that I would say this. Has it still its quirks? Yes. But way less than I thought. And Gnome + their UI framework makes the apps look so georgous now. Really impressed by the quality of all those apps. OpenSource does not need to look ugly. Seems like #libadwaita makes it really straightforward to build beautiful apps.

A big thank you to all amazing open-source contributors to that ecosystem.

DuckDuckFedi, what kind of desktop environment do GNOME developers use?

I am curious because some of the design decisions feel as if they had been made by people who... don't use GUIs at all? Or maybe are new to computers in general?

Some data points:

  • No way to adjust screen brightness out of the box.
  • No solid color backgrounds, only pictures.
  • At least the missing close buttons were just a temporary lapse of judgement.

#gnome

The more I use it, the more I love #gnome. It is such a sleek desktop environment. Wether on the desktop-pc or on the laptop, it is smooth, does not bother me and justs works without any problems.

I am exited to see, what new features are shipped with gnome 49 🙂

Thanks to all the devs.

And yes... I am a friend of gnome 😉

How GNOME made its Calendar application accessible

This article will explain in details about the fundamental issues that held back accessibility in GNOME Calendar since the very beginning of its existence, the progress we have made with accessibility as well as our thought process in achieving it, and the now and future of accessibility in GNOME Calendar.

On August 15, 1997, @Migueldeicaza announced the start of GNOME on the GTK mailing list¹. Twenty-eight years later a lot has changed, but we continue to develop and iterate on “a free and complete set of user friendly applications and desktop tools… based entirely on free software.”

To help us continue this work far into the future, we hope you join us in celebrating our birthday by becoming a Friend of GNOME today! 🎂

New #GNOME app release! Just a tiny one, based on the idea from a few weeks ago ( mastodon.social/@pojntfx/11491… ). A nice skeumorphic Pomodoro timer, except you get to set the session and pause durations yourself (which happens to be the way I use my physical Pomodoro timer).

I have 90 apps installed!! Fills almost 3 and a half pages of GNOME's app list.

These are apps that create desktop icons. If I count all the Libreoffice icons then it comes to 96 apps. 82 of them are Flatpaks, the rest came preinstalled with Fedora Silverblue.

And to think many moons ago I used to dislike GUI applications so much. Now I can't live without them.

Massive respect for all the people making Linux system more user friendly!

Embloggeration happened: bassi.io/articles/2025/08/03/g…

For those who were unable to attend, or see the recording, these are the notes for my GUADEC 2025 presentation about introducing a formal technical governance in GNOME, starting from a "change proposal" process, through the addition of a steering committee to evaluate those changes, and all the way down to the removal of the role of the "maintainer" for projects that exist under the GNOME umbrella.
