Speaking of jumping ship, I store all my files in #Microsoft #OneDrive and would like to get rid of that dependency as I'm working to replace my workflow with #FLOSS tools where practical. Do y'all have recommendations for a #CloudStorage service which has reasonably #accessible clients for #ScreenReader users (I primarily use #Fedora Workstation 43 but also use #Windows 11, #Android, and #iOS), can sync to my local filesystem, and/or can appear in the #GNOME desktop File Manager? I'm not interested in self-hosting something like #Nextcloud, #OwnCloud, etc. Any suggestions or firsthand experiences would be greatly appreciated.

maybe the #gnome project needs a better distinction between what's an official gnome app and what's not

just saw someone get disgusted at the whole gnome project just because someone else made a GNOME-style app for talking to large language models, and a tech news website called it a "GNOME app"

jadies and lentlemen, as of today I am now a GNOME foundation member :)

I agree! #GNOME rocks. They are one of the organizations that I regularly donate to. Keep up the great work!

Attention all ricers: GNOME Calendar 50 will be able to use your gamer mouse's dedicated back/forward buttons to switch between the previous/next month or week, thanks to @zoeyTheWitch having implemented this very handy feature: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-c…

When I started experimenting with #Linux again in 2024, I was very impressed at how mature everything had become since I last tried it in the mid-00s. The biggest surprise, though, was #GNOME. It had a level of intentionality and clarity of vision that far exceeded my expectations of a FLOSS project. It made me feel welcome and comfortable.

To the developers of @gnome : Thank you for having the audacity to strive for simplicity in the face of continued criticism from the community. It matters.

I have a first laptop with HiDPI screen and trying to set GUI scaling in #Gnome.

I enabled experimntal fractional scaling, and set 166% scaling factor in Gnome settings.

For GDK apps there is no problem.
But many other apps are not scaled, or are scaled partly - window header bar is small. Is there universal solution to this? Or how do you set scaling on all GUI toolkits like GTK2, Electron, QT, Java?

I guess this warrants a screenshot, as I keep seeing #GNOME + #Linux threads where folks freak out about the "middle click paste" gsetting being set to False by default in gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gsettin…. Some ask "How dare they hide this into a gsetting to be toggled", or "they should add it to GNOME Tweaks" etc.…

Thing is, it's *already* in GNOME Tweaks, since 2016: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-t…

We were told multiple times the gsetting is not getting removed. I'll keep using it & move on. :blobcatcoffee:

Question: what are y'all using as secret service on #Linux? (With #Wayland and #sway, if that matters.)

I did not like #GNOME #Keyring, because that pulled in tons of stuff I didn't want.

I'm currently using #KeePassXC, but let's just say it's a much better password manager than a Secret Service. (e.g., it can't remember authorized binaries over a session, and handling multiple databases isn't great.)

Ideally, I want something that does only this, but does it well.

because I keep biting off more than I can chew. I wanted to release a small utility first to get familiar again with #GNOME / #GTK / #Flatpak development.

also something that I need myself. a week worth of hacking.

#GNOME has implemented: HDR brightness controls, lock‑screen media controls, a new accessibility menu, and multitouch input support but people are like “meh.” But they’re proposing to remove the central click‑to‑paste feature, and people are going crazy xD

Oh this is neat! Especially the break reminders.

If anyone's looking for a fun illustration project or an opportunity to get into the GNOME artwork style: Crosswords needs some illustrations for the "How to Play" instructions :)

Linux desktop voice control has a gap. Talon costs money. Other tools are X11-only or cloud-dependent.

So I built EasySpeak.

- Free and open source (GPL-3.0)
- Fully local — no cloud, no accounts
- Wayland-native

Built for RSI, accessibility, or anyone who wants to talk to their computer.

I tried to enable the #GNOME screen reader (aka orca) to test the #accessibility of some application.

I have little experience with screen readers, but the GNOME experience after enabling the screen reader appears to be super bad. I can barely understand the voice. The speech synthesis is horrible, I have heard better in the 90s.

Is this the expected state of free software screen readers? How can I get something usable?

FLOSS #MaintainerLife public service advisory:
If you're filing a potential bug upstream in #GNOME, particularly on rapidly-improving apps like GNOME Calendar, please test the latest version, unmodified by third-parties. #Flatpak helps.

Don't come at me with a 4-years-old version cowboy-patched against our will by #Linux distros like Mint; I will send you downstream, like this: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-c…

Are you a #GNOME volunteer? Tell us your 2025 highlights!

Do you know that some companies will match your volunteer hours with GNOME providing $10-$25 per hour to the GNOME Foundation? Some can offer up to $15k/year.

If you have volunteered for GNOME, this is a great way to help #GNOME additionally through your efforts.

Help us sustainably fund GNOME for the future!

I joined the Summer of GNOME OS challenge, and actually ended up creating/registering so many issues that I was in the top three when the challenge ended. I'm pretty sure the only reason is because others didn't register their issues, though, but it was still fun.

Also, getting a reply and being taken seriously when I butted in on a board discussion was really nice :)

Recently, for Digital Wellbeing we merged notification improvements. Other feature work that will allow parents to better set their kids screen time by not allowing kids to unlock the screen and allow parents to extend screen time as needed is under review.

Digital Wellbeing helps parents encourage safe and healthy habits for their kids. These are features that are funded by the GNOME Foundation. #DigitalWellbeing #FriendsofGNOME

I've heard recently that there are plans to deprecate #gnome #gtk in favour of #tcltk. My source said that by 2027, most projects will have migrated from GTK to Tcl/Tk. Are you prepared for the switch over? @ebassi

Looks like global shortcuts are not possible under #Wayland's security model. #Hyprland apparently poked a hole into it to enable it.

If anyone knows a workaround for #KDE (or #GNOME) let me know. I used to define global shortcuts for all sorts of stuff.
