I know that Tuta has been planning it for years. But that wasn't my question.

Apparently #Tuta still hasn't set a concrete, near term date for the availability of the *option to export all emails in one go*.

So: Customers can easily import their emails to #Tutamail, but they have to manually select and export all of their emails if they want to migrate away from Tuta to a different #email provider.

To me, that looks like a vendor lock-in.

Big thanks for the @eff for these recommendations to the #EU:

βœ… Protect users’ rights to #secure, #encrypted, and #private communication

βœ… Adopt a #privacy-first approach to fighting online harms like #targeted #ads

βœ… User-centric approach to regulate big tech platforms (Digital Markets Act)

βœ… Create conditions of fair digital markets that foster choice innovation and fundamental rights

We at Tuta couldn't agree more! πŸ‘ πŸ‘ πŸ‘

So a crazy thing happened. In a crime thriller film called Les chambres rouges (Red Rooms, 2023) there is a scene where the hacker protagonist is attempting to purchase a snuff film in online auction. The auction happens via IRC or IRC-like chatting environment and to my surprise there's actually me @rolle and my wife @mustikkasoppa who are one of the bidders.

1) The nickname of my wife is mistakenly written as "mustikasoppa" (with one k) but if I recall correctly she has used a mistakenly written nickname in the past
2) We are both operators and on the same IRC channel as we've been for the past 17 years

This is not a coincidence. One nickname can be made up by accident but not two with these features and definitely not in a French movie. My wife's nick "mustikkasoppa" is Finnish and means "blueberry soup".

Our IRC logs are more or less public because of open source and statistics so I presume the scene has been made with chatgpt which has scraped our nicks from the Internet so that they ended up in the movie. We still chat via IRC every day together.

The era of AI... Do your background check, folks. I'm glad this wasn't a dramatized documentary film but a complete fiction. However my wife and I are real. Mixed feelings.

Repeat offenders drive bulk of tech support scams via #Google #Ads

Here it is: the Finnish Parliament has sided against #ChatControl !

I am overjoyed that in their statement, they have outlined exactly what this proposal would entail: mass surveillance in Europe.

From their statement (translation by me):

"..the suggested model would, in fact, lead to the mass surveillance of communication and would weaken the integrity of communication in the EU."

I'm hitting many bugs in @Tutanota these days. Typically, just this morning when I opened the Mail Android app, I got "Error message: You forgot to migrate your databases! sys.version should be >= 114 but in db it is 112", and a "404 Not Found" on a calendar event. For this last one, it's probably because I deleted the event from the Tuta Calendar app, but it didn't stop it from displaying a reminder for the deleted event... And the unread email counter is constantly wrong 😫

Your marketing about #privacy got me. :catjam:

"Microsoft Office, like many companies in recent months, has slyly turned on an β€œopt-out” feature that scrapes your Word and Excel documents to train its internal AI systems. This setting is turned on by default, and you have to manually uncheck a box in order to opt out.

If you are a writer who uses MS Word to write any proprietary content (blog posts, novels, or any work you intend to protect with copyright and/or sell), you’re going to want to turn this feature off immediately.

I won’t beat around the bush. Microsoft Office doesn’t make it easy to opt out of this new AI privacy agreement, as the feature is hidden through a series of popup menus in your settings:

On a Windows computer, follow these steps to turn off β€œConnected Experiences”: File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Privacy Settings > Optional Connected Experiences > Uncheck box: β€œTurn on optional connected experiences”"

To everyone when they see horrible privacy news about Microsoft replying with:

"I don't care, I use Linux"

Sure, you do. But does your medical clinic do? Does your therapist do? Does your family member typing a personal email to you in Word before sending it do too?

This is a systemic problem.

You cannot protect your own data only by using Linux yourself. You must also demand stronger regulations and enforcement to obligate organizations around to protect your data as well.

πŸ“£ Attention all custom ROM users and advocates for digital rights! πŸ“£

Google's Play Integrity is limiting access to certain functionalities and applications for those using custom operating systems. This is a direct attack on the open-source community and a step towards further consolidating Google's monopoly in the mobile ecosystem.

The European Commission is aware of the situation, but has deemed it a low priority: europarl.europa.eu/doceo/docum…

This article discusses how to protect privacy, amidst concerns of increased government surveillance.

The article is aimed at Asylum seekers & immigrants to the US, but it's solid advice for anyone, really.

Recommendations include using encrypted messaging apps like Signal, Apple iMessage, and WhatsApp, and setting messages to disappear.

It also recommends minimizing data sharing and deleting data when possible, particularly from Google.

Real time collaboration software and text boxes that rapidly save drafts to the cloud essentially log your fingerprintable typing behavior. The industry refers to this information as β€œkeystroke dynamics” or β€œtyping biometrics”.

Other modern β€œoperator signatures” are easier to minimize. A user can learn to obfuscate writing style, or can use keyboard navigation with different pointing devices to limit fingerprinting of mouse behavior.

Keystroke biometrics are difficult to anonymize without installing software such as kloak or browser extensions (the latter of which may add fingerprintable vectors) designed to cloak some of your typing habits. Signature typos, approximate typing speed, etc. will still leak. Alternatively, we could normalize typing messages out in a simple offline editors that don’t store revision history before pasting them into other input fields.

I've seen a number of toots today advising people against scanning random #QRCodes because they can be used in a number of malicious ways.

There are a number of legitimate ways people can use such codes to trick others, and it can require some deeper understanding of how systems work to avoid them. For that reason, I'm not going to contradict that recommendation, but I will add to it.

QR codes are usually just URLs encoded in a visual, machine-readable form, so they aren't necessarily more dangerous than a link. The danger comes from the fact that most scanner apps will directly open whatever URL you scan without giving you the opportunity to consider whether that's a good idea.

You can reduce the risk of scanning such codes by installing a better app which requires manual interaction to open URLs after decoding them.

For android users I recommend "BinaryEye", since it's open-source, ad-free, and has a bunch of other useful features.

Its github page links to both F-Droid and the play store:

I’ve been on Fedi for a year now and have fallen in love with the platform, so here’s my introduction! I studied computer science with a focus on RTOS and FP/PL, but I’m about to start my final semester of law school. I’ll be practicing at a boutique firm that primarily handles IP cases once I’m barred. I foilboard and I play way too many rhythm games in and out of the arcade.

I contribute to open source projects where I can, and I write up my experience in my digital garden which I’ve been maintaining for over a year now. It’s also a good place to find usage tips for projects/tools that you might want to use.

My passion for tech also includes privacy, and I’m an advocate for minimizing your digital footprint. GenAI is a scam and its purveyors are causing real harm while they sell it as hard as they can.

Hackers, #Infosec specialists and #privacy advocates are going to be very important in the months to come. Please read the EFF's surveillance self-defense guide ssd.eff.org/ and reduce as much as possible the information that companies like Google or Amazon collect about you. Fedi admins and moderators, help us keeping the people away from the online agressors. If possible, make sure the services you use are based in Europe. All hands on deck

Wild ass day in the Tor node operator world. Got an email from my VPS, forwarding a complaint from WatchDog CyberSecurity saying that my box was scanning SSH ports!

> Oh no, oh no, I knew I should have set up fail2ban, oh god why was I so lackadaisical!

So I remote in to the machine: no unusual network activity, no unusual processes, users, logins, command history, no sign that anything is doing anything I didn't tell it to do.

So what's up? Turns out there's been a widespread campaign where some actor is spoofing IPs to make it look like systems running Tor are scanning port 22: forum.torproject.org/t/tor-rel…

Operators from all over are saying they're getting nastygrams from their VPS providers because WatchDog is fingering their source IPs (which are being spoofed and NOT part of a global portscanning botnet).

@delroth did an amazing writeup of the whole thing here: delroth.net/posts/spoofed-mass…
