When a Free Software project (Profanity) is run by a jackass.

Just did a simple PR that changed a Ellipsis Char that does not display well on Arch Linux TTY (because it is a newer char), to 3 dots. A simple change.

It was not approved (after much time), although, in all the rest of the source code, 3 dots are used (3 dots is used 26 times in the source code). There is only one instance of the Ellipsis char, and it was this that the PR was changing to 3 dots.

This release brings many bug fixes and some useful improvements. Gajim now allows you to delete messages from your local chat history (in case of nasty spam messages). Furthermore, detection of WAV audio files has been improved and you can now click the waveform to skip to a specific timestamp within a voice message. Thank you for all your contributions!

XMPP/Jabber people, have you seen @joinjabber?

They're a collective trying to get XMPP to a wider audience by improving the user experience, and they have a website that helps non-techy people to sign up:

This is really nice to see, there's so much potential in XMPP as an alternative to Whatsapp etc.

It's really easy to use XMPP once you've got set up, but finding a well-run well-maintained server, and finding a good regularly updated app, have historically been more difficult and scary than they needed to be.

Looks like JoinJabber are doing something about it! 😃

Today I learned that when you "edit" or "correct" a message in #XMPP, the original message is still technically stored on the server or device. It's the client side that understands that the new message is an edit of the previous message, and "displays" it as such. But, if you send a password or something sensitive, "editing" the message after it has been sent might not remove the actual contents of the original version of the message, so make sure you use #encryption too.
