Fediverse users "People on Bluesky are terrible people!"

Bluesky users "People on Mastodon are terrible people!"

(I'll tell you choose which Spiderman is which user)

(at a time when there are real bad people and real bad places on the internet, can people stop being silly a minute?)

How to block Bluesky from Mastodon:

1. Go to the profile page of the account @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy
2. Click ⋯
3. Click "Block Domain" to stop seeing Bluesky accounts
4. Click "Block" to prevent your own account being bridged to Bluesky

You may need to copy-paste @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy into the search box on your server to make the profile appear.

If you can't find the account @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy, your server is probably already blocking the Bluesky bridge.

An important PSA for people who are active on #Bluesky and who, upon hearing that the ICE account was officially verified, are saying: "I will just block it."

Blocking on Bluesky is NOT PRIVATE: it's very easy to see who is blocking any account by visiting sites that list that information.

I took a screenshot from clearsky.app, listing all the accounts that are blocking ICE (I pixelated avatars and usernames for privacy purposes).

The safest bet is to mute (that info is private) 😫

Wow. Bluesky has just welcomed and verified ICE.

For anyone still thinking Bsky is a real alternative to Twitter: No, it's not.

Mastodon is. Bsky is just X at its infancy.

About Bluesky and federation:
Edit: There might be some mistakes, and my information could be outdated, but the point still stands - Bluesky wasn't built on 100% federation from the start.

I've been wondering about Bluesky's decentralization again. I can't think of any reason why I'd want to self-host Bluesky in its current form. I cannot 100% self host "my own Bluesky".

Their main selling points for building their own protocol were easier migration and better discoverability, but right now there's no simple way to migrate my Bluesky account to my own instance. And hosting the centralized parts yourself isn't really possible, or if it were, not affordable, they haven't made that feasible, by design, it seems.

Even if you self-host a PDS, Bluesky's Relay only indexes up to 10 accounts from it. You can run more, but they won't federate, the central infrastructure decides what gets seen. They control this (source: docs.bsky.app/blog/self-host-f….). You can self-host a PDS (Personal Data Server), but you still depend on Bluesky's centralized Relay and AppView. There's no production-ready alternative infrastructure from what I gather.

It feels like I'd be renting a room in a hotel that someone else is running anyway, when I want my own hotel.

If Mastodon gGmbH vanishes tomorrow, my instance keeps running and federating with everyone else. If Bluesky PBC vanishes, the ecosystem would need to scramble to stand up replacement infrastructure that doesn't really exist yet.

ATProto keeps getting evaluated on its promises while other systems get evaluated on their merits. The "portability" selling point depends on infrastructure that isn't mature enough to actually catch you if Bluesky falls.

I trust W3C, the builders and fathers of the World Wide Web, ActivityPub and the Fediverse.

Bluesky Connector

Hallo !Friendica Support,

#Fediverse #bridge knowledge question: Since my account gets propagated to #Bluesky, sometimes people from there try to interact with me. I assume they have no clue I'm outside of that network. I would like to interact with them *in any way possible* that will not force me to create bsky account. So my question is: Can I post from Fedi to Bsky somehow without having an account?

❌ Big Techs like Musk's X do not need to own the monopoly.

✅ Luckily there are better Twitter alternatives.

👉🏼 In today's guide we take a look at the best ones so that you can say NO to big tech.

So Bluesky staff refuses to protect & even actively goes out of its way to suppress trans people & Palestinians but has decided... *checks notes* ... AI slop posters are a protected category

I can’t help but feel vindicated for my ultimate decision to not touch #Bluesky even though my reason was different than this; I couldn’t get past the captcha to even get an account created. So oftentimes if someone posts something here from there I never see it. I’m just glad I’m here and not there. social.chinwag.org/@FediThing/…

EDIT: In response to this post @anewsocial has clarified their instance level opt-in. See: mastodon.online/@mastodonmigra…

NOTICE: Your account may soon be bridged to #Bluesky whether or not you want it to be.

According to @LaurensHof's excellent Fediverse Report (fediversereport.com/fediverse-…) changes have been made to the Bluesky bridge.

"Bridgy Fed, the bridging software that connects ActivityPub with ATProto, has gotten an update where server admins can opt-in to the bridge for their entire server."

Many consider #Bluesky a success, but in fact its activity has steadily declined since Trump's inauguration. The #Fediverse has had similar trends. Rapid growth caused by an external event is always followed by a slow decline back to a small base of loyal users. In a world full of dopamine addiction, it's hard to be a social network without dark patterns.

Bluesky To Sell Your Content To AI Data Miners

So it begins. Hidden in Jay Graber's recent charm offensive is this innocuously framed initiative: Bluesky is weighing a proposal that gives users consent over how their data is used for AI (techcrunch.com/2025/03/10/blue…)

Not so fast.

1) Shows they are planning on doing content deals with AI companies.
2) Seems like it is Opt-out vs. Opt-in (see below).
3) It is just a voluntary robots.txt file

Yo!

I have been building a universal fedi client called #DhaagaApp

It supports all 3 biggest decentralized protocols (#mastoapi, #bluesky and #misskey)

It has pretty timelines, unique client-side features and a modern, aesthetic design.

It's available on Play Store and #IzzyonDroid

Do have a look, and share with your friends if you like it. ^^

I also post frequent devlogs and am always excited to receive feedback.

We've added some bluer skies to our social media platforms. (Don't worry, we're very much staying here on Mastodon!) If you're on #BlueSky and would like to give us a follow, we're at: bsky.app/profile/thunderbird.n…

This fucking Free Our Feeds bullshit is basically trying to do for Bluesky what Mozilla does for Google.

And guess what, there’s Mozilla’s executive director and president on as custodians alongside two guys from AI companies and the executive director of Meta partner Social Web Foundation.

I’m so bloody sick and tired of bloody Silicon Valley asshats sucking all the oxygen out of the room with their bullshit and I truly hope the folks roped into legitimising it realise this and distance themselves as quickly as possible (you know who you are).

A PSA for people active on #Bluesky: your block list is PUBLIC information.

A website that tracks Bluesky stats – which I am not naming here on purpose – makes this job super easy: you can enter *any* username and see the accounts a user has blocked.

(Yes I tested it with my account and was horrified)

I'm alarmed by this because the information could be weaponized for abuse.

Muting may be the safer choice then?

Please read up about Bluesky here: dustycloud.org/blog/how-decent… (by @cwebber)

Jako je moc fajn, že #Bluesky profily maj RSS feedy. Já jen, že #Twitter je míval taky a jak to dopadlo… 😄 Asi bych ani RSS, ani @fed.brid.gy nebral jako samozřejmost.

If you've been using #Bluesky more lately, you'll want to know that an unofficial app for Windows 11 is now being worked on.

While it's still in beta, we should see updates every few days to bring it up to feature parity.

If you harbored any doubts regarding #Bluesky and their claims of decentralization, you HAVE TO read this brilliant, insightful toot by @jonny about the impossibility of multiple relays and what would happen if one tried to split off from #Bsky the corporation: neuromatch.social/@jonny/11336…

I actually recommend you read the whole thread - and follow Jonny! (Thank you for the recommendation @oblomov!)

yikes, bsky removing or labeling Palestinian accounts as spam, ostensibly because they are following too many people or posting gofundmes, but according to these threads the problem looks too widespread to just be a coincidence from e.g. automated flagging. Can't find any response from their mod team. Composable moderation is good but i am not sure how the atproto labeling model addresses the baseline problem of scaling suspensions/bans - either they take a very light touch and you get a flood of nazis, or you need to lean on automated tools or overworked mods without enough context which has (hopefully accidentally, but still really bad) impacts like this.

For some reason people fleeing the sinking #Twitter / #X ship for #BlueSky don't seem to be aware of the fact that crypto bros at #BlockchainCapital bought a huge stake in the company just a few weeks ago. Like these are basically the same crypto bros who just helped #ElonMusk buy Twitter. They might even be literally the same people (I strongly suspect they are but I'm too lazy to check). Either way #BlockchainCapital was co-founded by #BrockPierce, who also brought you #Tether, AKA the company that Trump's transition team chairman manages $120 billion for. Pierce is also a friend of the #Netanyahu family.

You don't have to take my word for it. Here's the official press release: bsky.social/about/blog/10-24-2…

Moving to BlueSky is not an escape. Growing a base there is just putting in a bunch of work to create a platform that will be co-opted by crypto bros as soon as X breaks in half.

p.s. crypto bros (#a16z) also own #Substack

New: A Conceptual Model of ATProto and ActivityPub

You might want to know a little bit more about how #Bluesky and #atproto works, without needing to know all the technical details. This is a high level overview of how to think about how atproto works, and how it differs from #ActivityPub.

It is also a reflection on the concepts of decentralisation and federation, and what they bring to both the #fediverse and the #atmosphere

Read at: fediversereport.com/a-conceptu…

i do think the degree to which bluesky is stressing that they do not use blockchains really underscores how toxic even a faint whiff of blockchain has become to any normal platform

#Bluesky

“our lead shares our philosophy that technology should serve the user, not the reverse

this is why they focus on blockchains, a technology basically always used at the expense of its users”

#Bluesky

This is why I have been trying to warn about #BlueSky.

BlueSky has just been partially bought by a cryptocurrency company "Blockchain Capital" and appointed a blockchain / cryptocurrency expert to their board:

bsky.social/about/blog/10-24-2…

The board member is a bitcoin researcher involved with NFT analytics.

BlueSky describe the tie-up with Blockchain Capital as a "natural partnership" and says the blockchain company has "a uniquely deep understanding of our decentralized foundation".
