So ...there's various situations where .NET UI #accessibility just isn't as automatic as it should be. Loads of times I see perfectly good label texts within buttons, listItems, etc. that for whatever internal reason isn't actually the button's #accessible name. This has been a problem for close to twenty years now and I doubt #microsoft is ever going to fix it, so I had a crack at it. All the disclaimers apply, this is mostly just a thing I wrote for myself and I figured it might be helpful to some: github.com/zersiax/dotnet_fix
If you have to use .NET apps that seemingly have a bunch of unlabeled buttons, but object navigation reveals text inside, this might help some. No guarantees, and if it breaks you get to keep both pieces :P #foss #NVDA #screenReader #blind

So one thing I notice about #blind Internet culture: even back on Twitter, and now here in the #fediverse, blind people tend towards having discussions in giant threads, sometimes with as many as 10-12 people in them, that can often stretch on for days. I rarely (if ever) see sighted culture do this. I wonder why? It's not a criticism, it's just interesting to me. Maybe because Discord and other chat apps were historically less #accessible, so blind culture tends to use the fediverse more as a discussion platform? Or maybe it's something UI related that makes it easier for blind folks to track giant threads of doom? The few times I've been involved in this style of discussion with sighted folks, they've become confused and begged for everyone to move to Discord or Slack or somewhere. On the other hand, I rarely see blind people do a single, lengthy post broken up and threaded the way sighted people do, with (1/N) at the end. We tend to just move to instances with longer character limits, or put our long form thoughts on a webpage or something.

Edit to add: I'm pleased to say that this post has now become a perfect example of the thing I was talking about; my last post in the thread included the phrase "transsexual furry puppygirls". It makes me happy that people unfamiliar with what I'm talking about need do nothing more than look at the thread on this post.

I just tried to have an AI-powered "screenReader" drag a song in a SPotify playlist one position upwards. Both songs were visible, and supposedly the AI knew exactly how to do this, and yet ...the poor thing kept going in circles trying to drag-and-drop things. Given every corporate high-flyer insists this is the best thing since porn, will this mean we FINALLY get an #accessible equivalent to drag-and-drop actions in popular applications? So the AI can use them? I mean hey, if that were to happen I guess I'll know a robot's more important than I am but hey, I'll take the win I suppose #dystopia

How is the state of PDF #accessibility on macOS for #screenReader users? If I gave someone a PDF that was prepared in a fully #accessible way, what would they use to read it with #VoiceOver, and to what extent would the accessibility be retained?

Note that I'm specifically not interested in applications that strip out all of the text to essentially make a plain version. Those can be useful when you just need to read something and don't care how, but the degree to which accessible semantics like headings, tables, lists, etc. are kept at that point is usually zero.

I'm also not asking about applications that reinvent the accessibility for PDFs and ignore what's already there, as many browsers do.

As an experiment, I am quite literally #vibeCoding an #accessibility mod for a game. I'm about 90% of the way there (AI is making a mess of things but even a broken clock is right twice a day), and so far, I have spent a grand total of six dollars, and maybe about a half an hour of work.
But sure, keep telling me making things #accessible is too expensive, takes too much time and doesn't need priority.
Want to force #developers to use #AI? Do me a favor, force them to use it for this as well while you're busy making their lives miserable :P #rant

What I often find such an interesting take in #accessibility discussions is this concept of "We will make it work for the majority first, and then add accessibility features".
This shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how accessibility, and therefore " features" of accessibility work.
For one, making something #accessible for #screenReaders often requires no visual modifications at all, and requires making calls early in the development cycle to not have to rewrite your entire UI using widgets that even support #assistive #technology. Once that call has been made, making elements accessible is often a matter of, what a concept, using the widgets the way they were meant to be used.

The #adGuard apps are fairly #accessible with #NVDA, just FYI. As is the interface for AdGuard DNS. I haven't tried VPN because I don't need that, and I don't run AdGuard home because I want to run my own DNS about as much as I want to run my own email.

Today is Global #accessibility awareness day and I think I speak for a lot of people in the community when I say I'm tired. Particularly over the last few months, the overall climate towards accessibility and #diversity hasn't been super welcoming and while I have a good support network that can remind me that I am, in fact, human and worth existing, many do not. If you receive a request to make something #accessible, from anyone, keep in mind that may very well be the 5th, 10th or even 100th attempt this person has made today at screaming into the void hoping to be seen as a person rather than a potential drain on resources. Rather tna big companies showing off #AI gizmos that mean we've offloaded a problem we didn't want to deal with onto a fallible set of algorithms, maybe #gaad should be about being aware of how ridiculous it is that accessibility professionals and consumers need to fight to even be seen as human these days, because make no mistake, we do.

So this evening, #Windows update installed the wrong #AMD video driver update for my Framework 16. Using #narrator, I was able to boot into recovery mode, enter my bitlocker key to decrypt the effected drive, find my system restore point, and restore it to just before the bad update. The entire process was fully #accessible: all of my sound devices worked, my external keyboard worked, the screen reader read every screen, etc. The only thing that wouldn't work was my Braille display.

So now that bit.ly is showing ads, if you need a URL shortener, #lynx is decent and #accessible and easy to host. And before you tell me that we don't need URL shorteners anymore and how they're a security risk, I need them for:
1. Business cards, slides, signs, and other physical objects that need a URL. While most phones can scan QR Codes, you can't read them out loud for #blind folks. If you're doing a presentation, "scan the QR code on screen" isn't good enough. You need to have a URL that you can speak and another human can remember. Yes, NFC is a thing, but it doesn't solve that problem.
2. Places that still don't allow URLs (LinkedIn) or where long URLs are awkward to work with (text-only emails, the terminal, etc.)
3. Times (like a phone call) where I need to tell someone a URL using the noises that come from my face-parts

If you're a #blind user, you should really consider #Kagi for web search. Especially if you pay for chat GPT pro, you can subscribe to Kagi instead for cheaper and get more features. But even if you don't want AI, the search page is #accessible, fast, and light-weight. And unlike other big tech companies (Microsoft and Google) Kagi still offers a cheaper plan with no AI if you don't want it. Also, because they downrank websites with ads, the more accessible results tend to be at the top. Kagi also lets you block domains from your results. So I got rid of inaccessible stuff like instagram and pinterest, and downranked YouTube, because those results aren't usually #screenreader accessible. While I don't agree with many of the opinions of the @kagihq founder (especially his decision to do business with Yandex for image search), I still feel like using Kagi is more ethical than dealing with Google or Bing, and that these are reasonable differences of opinion that reasonable people can have, not just another clownishly evil tech company. I also find the idea that if you're a paying customer, that somehow guarantees the business will treat you better, really strange. I pay a lot to my ISP and they still treat me like dirt!
